Given a choice between these two brands, which would you choose for a new 2 1/2 ton heat pump? I do not have any model numbers at the moment. Should there be a price difference between the two and if so, about how much? Which should be the higher price? And is the Goodman 10 year warranty any better than any other?

I think Frigidaire is owned by Nordyne and they had some financial problems, but I think they might have fixed that problem. I priced Goodman vs Rheeme vs Trane and went with Trane XR-13/SERE 13. I based it on how much longer I was going to be in the home, price, reputation, talking to friends, HVAC blogs. The big factor is always the installation so even with great HVAC equipment, if the install is bad, you will hate life. Are you going with the new freon or the older stuff? New line set etc...

frigidaire in my area is slightly higher,,,sort of a
mid range between goodman, york vs frigidaire..am standard
with upper tier being lennox trane

Which should be the higher price?

And is the Goodman 10 year warranty any better than any other? not sure about that..
are you limited to these two brands by hvac companies in your area?

This thread is really old but thought I'd resurrect it since I'm starting to think about a new furnace for my lake cabin in northern Minnesota. Wanted to research it in advance so when the old furnace dies I'm prepared - and not rushing to make a decision. At home we have a Bryant Plus90i that is about twelve years old. It has been good - no problems - but no idea if this brand or comparable model is still good. Since this lake cabin is in a cold climate and we don't live there year round, the number one priority is reliability. We don't shut this place down so if the furnace goes out and we can't get there, the pipes freeze. We have a system to notify us if the temperature drops but still - not convenient or maybe even possible to get there to deal with the problem timely. I'm not really concerned about price and it doesn't even have to be super efficient since we turn the heat down when we're not there. The place is very energy efficient so that combined with having the heat turned down much of the time leaves us with really low natural gas bills. I just want to know brand/model of high quality, high reliability natural gas, forced air furnace.

kjboggs I also live in Southeast about an 1 1/2 hrs down 85 from Charlotte and have a dual fuel system-HP with nat gas furnace backup. I don't mean to be rude but it is clear from your post that you and many other homeowners who have heat pumps don't understand its operation. First you never move your thermostat to "emergency heat" unless your outside HP condenser is not operating due to some mechanical problem and your home needs some heat until outside condenser can be repaired. What mdl thermostat do you have? Most HP thermostats have an indicator that shows auxilliary heat engaged with the outside condenser also operating. HPs provide some heat even at low outside temperatures. When the HP condenser can not maintain home's inside thermostat setting by itself, the aux heat will come on. Aux heat is nothing more than heat strips located at your air handler. Heat strips operating by themselves without the outside HP condenser running is called emergency heat. Do you know the size of the heat strip in each system? I would suspect a 7.5KW or even a 10 KW. Each KW produces about 3400 BTUs of heat. These heat strips will also come on when your HP goes into the defrost cycle which is nothing more than running your AC. The heat strips will temper your supply air so you don't have several minutes of cold air coming into your home during the defrost cycle. I personally prefer electronic demand defrost over the timed defrost method that most HPs have. Hope this is helpful and has answered your questions. IMO

"Speed Queen and Amana sold essentially the same machine from 1994-1997" They sure did, and those machines did not have an amazing reputation for reliability and were considered inferior to offerings from Maytag and Whirlpool at the time. They certainly were not anywhere near the worst washing machines made but they weren't the best either. They did have a better reputation than the Maytag SAV's which did nothing but make the design worse. Anyhow supposedly Alliance has made design improvements since then, so today's Speed Queens aren't really those machines. Speed Queen came back to the residential market in 2004 I believe but their top loaders did not become popular until many years later because in 2004 there were better options. Why buy this weird brand you'd never heard of "Speed Queen" when you could buy a proven Maytag or Whirlpool? However nowadays most people who do even a little bit of research know Maytag and Whirlpool are the same and their TL offerings are nowhere near as good as they were 10 years ago. Leading them to... Speed Queen! The point: we have a lot of positive reviews from people who bought theirs recently but I haven't seen any from people who have had them for more than 5 years. Even though they may be more reliable than before, supposedly the transmission and seal in the top loaders are very difficult to replace. Since the repairs may be expensive, many Speed Queens may be junked in under 10 years whereas a 30 year old Whirlpool direct drive could have the coupling replaced relatively cheaply. I still maintain they are the best top loader on the market today. However if you like your current machine don't go rushing off to buy a Speed Queen, it really won't be better with the exception of slightly more capacity. As for washing a king size comforter in a Speed Queen TL... I'm not buying that for a second. I linked a YouTube video of one washing a full size comforter and that washer is pretty darn full. You should never tightly pack stuff into a washer. It is not good for the item(s) being washed or the machine and will result in poor cleaning. Either buy a high capacity HE toploader/frontloader OR (my preferred strategy) take bulky items to the laundromat where they will have front loaders larger than anything you'd find at home specifically designed to wash these items. If you need to wash bulky items frequently and don't want to go to the laundromat, front loaders are the way to go. You say your machine is noisy and has had problems but it sounds like you just got a dud. Don't assume ALL front loaders are like yours. Many people get dud top loaders too. As for the noise, what does it sound like and it is just during the spin cycle or during tumbling as well? It could be normal or it could indicate a mechanical problem. My LG is silent while tumbling. Actually, more the opposite - the basic design derives from 1970s (or earlier?) Speed Queens back when they were owned by McGraw-Edison. When Raytheon (which already owned Amana) bought out McGraw-Edison's appliance division, Raytheon not only continued production of Speed Queen laundry machines, but also used the acquisition to give their Amana brand laundry machines to sell. Previously, Amana was known for their refrigerators, "deep" freezers, and RadaRange microwaves. Thus, Raytheon-built Amana and SQ laundry machines were nearly idendical. This continued through the late '90s, when Raytheon sold off their appliance units. The consumer side (which besides Amana still included long-gone brands like Caloric, Hardwick, and Modern Maid) went to HVAC/holding company Goodman, which later was bought by Maytag, which in turn was bought by Whirlpool. But Raytheon's commercial appliance business held on for about another year. Raytheon kept the US rights to the Speed Queen brand and continued to sell residential-style washers and dryers, but contractually only to the commercial market for the next 5 years. A year after the residential appliances sale, Raytheon sold the commercial side (SQ) to Alliance Laundry Systems. They still couldn't market Speed Queens to consumers due to a legal agreement with Goodman/Maytag, who was at first selling the same machines under a different name. However, the design of the SQ and Amana machines began to deverge almost as soon as the sale commenced, with SQ retaining the heavy-duty, minimalist designs that commercial cusomers liked, whereas Goodman and later Maytag cheapened them slightly and went to larger cabinets and door openings and more bells and whistles to woo the consumer market. After the 5-year commercial-only clause lapsed in about 2004, Speed Queen could again sell their machines to consumers. By this time, the current Amana lineup bore little resemblance to Speed Queen's offerings. Anyway, if you're buying a used top-load washer there are lots of reliable ones that can be picked up on the cheap (or sometimes free) . Besides those already mentioned, I've found the older GE washers and dryers (up to mid-'90s) to be reliable and easy to find parts for because they didn't change much year to year beyond cosmetics. They can be identified by smaller doors and metal rather than plastic tubs. Whirlpool and Kenmore are usually reliable, if unspectacular performers (beware of really slow spin speeds on older or lower-end models). Maytags that used their own design rather than cheaper ones from companies they later bought out were good. General Motors-era Frigidaires are terrific, but becoming hard to find (up to 1980). Really, most of the older TL washers were solidly built.

This is for an investment property I have. I was a bit confused about my original post. I was thinking (in error) that my contractor offered Frigidaire and Goodman. It actually is Carrier and Goodman. A different contractor offered the Frigidaire. This property had a gas furnace about 42 years old, still completely functional, plus central AC sharing the ductwork. The AC was shot. Horizontal in the crawl space with filter in the unit. Crawl in the dirt to change filter. Gas service costs $120 per year plus the cost of gas used plus the extra deposit with the gas company for service for non-property owners. The pilot light added to the cost of gas used. So my decision was to use heat pump, total electric, and install filter in new return grille located in the living space. Contacted 4 contractors. Each offered his proposal of how to accomplish the changeover. But only two priced the job. And the proposal I liked best was one of the two who priced the job. And his price was also best. So now the Goodman is installed. Workmanship on the latest install is top notch, as contrasted to the sloppy work of the original. Original duct work was mostly 6" galvanized with external insulation and we retained most of that. The old return was 12" galvanized for part of the run, a drywall-lined chase for the other part. The new return is 16" flex and anything more would have involved major structural changes. So now I have good install of a Goodman. We'll see.

much better to get mechanicals out of crawl space..
and bet that filter will be changed more often now that crawling in dirt is not necessary.

renters not changing filters is a problem I hear
about often from folks I know who have rentals.

They are not out of the crawl space. The plumbing is strangely lower than one might expect, limiting the space below for other installations. The original furnace was on single bricks laid flatways. The new unit is on 8" concrete blocks with plastic sheeting below the blocks. That is as high as the space permits. The crawl space is as dry as can be expected. The old condensate gravity drain piping was laid on the ground. I have not yet looked, but they said the inspector required the new to be 4" above the ground. That will be a problem for moving around in the crawl space. That pipe is also between the water heater and the crawl access door. Aren't regulations just great?
