I was given similar conflicting advice. I wound up picking out my cabinets first b/c I knew exactly what I wanted.

I had an idea of what I wanted for granite but hadn't picked out the slabs yet. I went to the tile store & they said tile first & helped me match it to my cab sample. They said to bring the tile samples to the granite place.

When I got to the granite store with all my samples, they said no - granite first, then bring the sample of the granite to match the cabs & backsplash.

I just laughed b/c they all thought their component was the most important. Whatever - in the end - hoping it all flows as well as it did between the small samples.

The decisions are endless and confusing. No one gave me advice on what to pick first. I picked the cabinets first - since they are the most expensive part of my remodel. I am in the process of looking at countertop options now.

I forgot, one guy told me to pick my paint color first!! Paint color is something that is easy to change. I disregarded his advice.

I think choosing stone first makes a lot of sense, but personally, I would hold off on the backsplash choice. If you look on this forum, I think many people do not choose their backsplash until after cabinets and stone have been installed!

Personally, I would choose the cabinet color/stain first. There are infinite tile types and colors to choose from and it will be easier to choose once the cabinets and stone are in and you can hodl up a tile sample to it in your actual room to see how the light affects it etc.

I fell in love with my Bianco Antico, and everything else had to fit with its personality.

The backsplash can be a very difficult decision, one you want to do in your own home after your counters, cabinets, floor and maybe even paint are in. This way you can bring home samples and see them under YOUR lights, and with your daylight, etc.

My backsplash struggle goes on....

Unless you find a granite that you are completely in love with first, I would pick out cabinets, then granite, then backsplash.
Im waiting until everything is done before I do my backsplash or paint my walls.

My remodel is due to start in August, but I have been planning since last March. I have changed my mind about a lot of things these past few months, but the one aspect that is still exactly the same is the custom copper backsplash. Everything else (cabinet paint colors, countertop, wall paint, even the flooring that won't even be near it!) has been chosen based on how well it goes with that copper.

However, based on the number of posters on these forums who have everything finished BUT the backsplash, I think I am in the minority! :-)

Order of importance is good advice. If you fall in love with a particular granite, then build around that. If you are ambivalent, it makes sense to start with the thing that has the fewest options... For us it started with the floor. It was going to be natural red oak. Period. So that dictated our cabinet choices because we wanted contrast. After cabinets, I would choose the counter top material. Back splash would come last for me because the choices are endless. In fact, I don't plan to do it until after we move in and I have time to live with the kitchen for awhile. Actually, wall paint color comes last. Infinite choices there.

My remodel is planned for mid April and I chose my granite first since that is something mother nature creates and we can't put our color order in with her. I have also chosen Typhoon Bordeaux but I haven't found my lot yet. Every slab I have liked has been sold and the ones available have been with the large rusty streak through it. I have someone looking for me now. Choosing cabinets is where I am at now and the color choices are limitless. My backsplash will be something we do after cabinets and granite are installed as I agree with previous poster that now you can bring home samples and see it in your own kitchen lighting throughout the day. Yes, it will take a little more time to finish the project, but it's a large detail that will impacts us daily and a little time now vs. regret later is well worth it. My two cents worth. Thanks all for all of your advice. I think I will stick to my original thought of waiting until I pick the cabinet color before even thinking about the backsplash. Typhoon Bordeaux is so beautiful but it is a bit busy so thinking maybe a neutral calm backsplash is in order.

As much as I would love to have all of these decisions DONE, I am thinking now that perhaps I should wait until the cabinets are installed and I have some time to live with it.

If anyone has suggestions for a backsplash that goes nicely with typhoon bordeaux granite, let me know. I'm open to suggestions !!!
