if no window behind sink, is it ok to not have cabinets above?

I posted about a large backsplash area behind a wet bar where there are single upper cabinets on either side but none in the middle, just a curved wood "valance" connecting them at the top. Someone responded that valances are outdated, which was a thought that I had when I saw the drawing from the kitchen person, but I don't want to add more cabinets as we are having major scope creep with everything in the basement as it is and we don't really need the extra cabinet space.

The cabinets do touch the ceiling b/c they're under a bulkhead area, so lower ceilings than the rest of the basement (which has 9 ft ceilings). Is it necessary to have something in between them (eg other cabinets or a valance) or can I just leave that area open? The backsplash will be tile up to the top. (or, is there something else that can be used to bridge the space?)

Thanks
