Carrier AC installation - fair price?

My AC appears to be near the brink. I live in N.Texas so the humidity is not too bad. My house is about 3,000 sq ft with most living space downstairs. Currently have a Rheem 5 ton down and 2.5 up both situated on the side of the house. The contractor recommends at a cost of approx $17,500. the following: 3 Ton Carrier Performance Series System with two speed condenser model # 24ACC736A003 36k btu 17 SEER, variable speed gas furnace-Farrier Infinity model # 58CVA090-1-16 90k btu and 80 AFUE, Carrier model # CNPHP6124ATA evaporator 60k btu and 17 SEER. The other unit is also a 24ACC660A003 but 60k btu 17 SEER with a Infinity 58CVA135-1-22 135k btu AFUE 80 furnace and a Carrier model # CNPHP6124ATA 60k btu 17 SEER Evaporator. Any thoughts, seems like a lot of cash to lay our for ac.? Think I will get the $1500 tax credit and $1k per unit to reduce the price to $14,000.00. Still seems like a lot but what do I know.....

ask the contractor for the highest efficiency single speed systems. Those would still be very efficient. If its not really humid where you live you probably don't need the 2 stage condensor.

The main purpose of the 2 stage condensor I guess is 2 run in low speed most of the time to control humidity.

You could also ask for multi-speed fans instead of variable speed. They are efficient. I know they are significantly less. You can also explore some less expensive brands. Many big brands have a less expensive brand. I've heard that bryant is cheaper than carrier and basically same equipment.

How cold does it get where you live and whats the price of electricity? Do you currently have natural-gas? You might be able just run straight heatpump instead of natural gas with a/c for atleast one of your systems.

On the HPs, ask for upgrade price on the Performance series 25HPA5 sgl stg and 25HPA6 two stage HP condenser. You did not mention the thermostat or controller. It should be the Infinity model. IMO

Hi tigerdunes, I guess we asked for carrier because we recognized the carrier name and not Day & Night. Also assumed my former general contractor installed the cheapest furnace he could find. So you're saying stick with a 13 SER Day & Night 5-ton condensor if the existing Day & Night furnace is not high-efficiency or variable speed. Everything is new. It's a major remodel that replaced the furnace/blower/condenser. I'm assuming the furnance and evap coil are both by Day & Night. The contractor said the unit was hanging from the rafters in the attic space. Thanks!

The new salesman (my 4th bid) says my heat strips are 5 kw, and his equipment will match that. Below is his bid. Quite a bit less expensive. This is without the federal tax credit subtracted, as far as I know, but am checking on that to be sure. The condenser, I believe, is 1-stage, the handler, variable. Any opinions welcome.
