Teacher Appreciation Basket

I need to make 8 baskets for teacher appreciation and thought to put some baked goods into each one.

What would you suggest?

Unless you know the preferences of each particular teacher, I'd go with something easy to share or freeze, and not necessarily sweet. Cookies, buns, scones. Though chocolate is usually a winner. If you know the teachers adore chocolate, you could go for intense, grown-up chocolate cupcakes. I haven't made "the best chocolate cake ever" parve, but I bet it would be fine, and it really does live up to the billing. :) If the teacher is Jewish and doesn't bake, I'd think challot would be welcome. Or if you want to impress the socks off of everyone, alligator. :) (It's not hard to make but people get a bit rabid about it...)

Home baked is always lovely, but unless you're the only one doing it, it can get a bit like mishloach manot at the popular kid's house. :) (Our congregation does them as a group project, so everybody gets one Purim basket with a hundred names, instead of a hundred baskets, thank goodness.) Perhaps a loaf of good sourdough bread?

Or homemade jam or a fruit curd? I was once given a jar of homemade cranberry curd with some flaky sweet biscuits to pair with it (and it was worth the Calories!).

I'm not big on sweets. :) It's the thoughtfulness that I treasure. Home baked is always a lovely gift. I really do think any of the above would be nice, though the sourdough might be too far out of the box.

I'm the only one baking. I decided on Cinnamon rolls and biscotti with Dunkin Donuts coffee boxes for the lunch room and
AnnT's danish's for the baskets.

That's going to get real expensive, really fast. My nephew is special needs. Here's what my SIL does. A gift card to the classroom teacher, usually to someplace the teacher can get classroom supplies. For everyone else, the one-on-one aide, the home nurses, the bus diver and aide, the therapists--she has my nephew make a card or a pencil holder or cookies or something else as gifts. My nephew's in fifth grade now and has a teacher, a teacher's aide, his own one-on-one aide, the bus driver, the bus aide, five different home nurses, physical therapists--home and school, occupational therapists--home and school, speech therapist, music therapist, two swim therapists (I don't know what they are really called, but they've worked some miracle and he can now swim unassisted), 11 doctors, the brace maker, the wheelchair guy, the mobility specialist and probably a few other people I'm forgetting. In your case, I'd give $25 gift cards to the teacher and the therapists. Then I'd give some sort of gift basket to the classroom--the teacher and the aides--something that they can easily split up amongst them. Cards for everyone else, handmade if your son can do that, or at least signed by him however he signs his name at this time. If you don't feel the card is enough, you can include a little thank you note of your own, thanking them for all the progress your son has made under their care. If you haven't had contact with someone, there's no need to give them anything at the holidays. I'm sure they won't be expecting it. (The nurse, the liaison.) As a teacher, I can tell you that there are several things that I appreciate from parents. First of all, know that Teacher Appreciation Week is a great idea but not all teachers are able to participate in the breakfasts/lunches! (I teach an afternoon Kindergarten class so with my teaching schedule, I miss lunch because my lunch break is at 10:00 a.m. and I miss breakfast because I team-teach at that time!) 1. Letter: Writing a letter to the principal and cc-ing it to the School Board/Superintendent and the teacher is a fabulous "gift" as it shows the parents' appreciation and effort, and makes a BIG impression on the administration. 2. Gift Certificate: Teachers are always appreciative of gift certificates to any office supply store, Target store, or crafts store. If there is a teacher supply store nearby, this is another great place to get a gift card. As a teacher, whenever I get a gc from a child, when I purchase something from that particular vendor, I always tell the entire class, "Oh, and a special thank you to so-and-so who helped pay for such-and-such today for our art project" or whatever. Grocery store gift certificates are also great for primary grade teachers (if the teacher does any cooking type activities). Book store gc are great, too. 3. Personalized: If you know the teacher well, and you know that he/she likes to get a cup of coffee at Starbucks, then a gc to Starbucks would be a nice personalized gift. Or, if the teacher likes fresh flowers, a single rose in a hand-decorated (by your child) vase such as a pretty water bottle would be wonderful. One of my personal favorites at the Christmas holiday is to receive homemade baked goods. Little things like this are always greatly appreciated. Last year, one of my students' dads was a chef and he made the BEST cookies. So, I would get these wonderful cookies for different occasions and I just loved it! Amelia would make me a handmade card and dad would bake the cookies, mom would wrap them in cellophane with a little bow and I'd be in heaven! It was just one of the nicest gifts I could ever get. (my hubby, who is a teacher too, would ask, "Did you get more of Amelia's cookies?")

Ok sorry guys I'm just going to go through this point by point for time consideration. Not being terse out of rudeness. "Build an easy and nice bookcase/shelving with bricks and planks (kids can do!)" Probably not. I'm sure that breaks all kind of safety rules and union regulations. In some districts it has to be earthquake safe. Can't risk a child-built shelf made of bricks and boards, full of books, toppling on someone. Any repairs and upgrades to schools are union contracts. "I would start in your community with a campaign to raise money" Start by talking to the teachers to see what changes they want and what the *needs* are, then find out from admin what will be allowed, then set a budget/goal, then raise money. You don't want to be stuck with a fat bank account full of funds dedicated to a project that you're not allowed to do or that won't help anyone. "Would also replace that big range for a coffee station with microwave and induction hot plate plus small fridge." The kindergartners at our school use the range once a week for cooking class, and PAC members use it to cook for fundraisers etc. Again, find out the needs *first*. " Boy, if you could get enough lamps in there just to turn off the flourescent lights, that would be huge." In some places public buildings aren't allowed to turn off lights, even in favour of lamps. There are health and safety regulations that cannot be thwarted. CHECK FIRST. Really, this is a public building. You simply cannot jump in and start improving. Much as we would all love to do everything we can to support our teachers and make their lives easier there is protocol that must be followed. Starting with communication with the involved parties. No one likes to be improved with no input, and educators especially have very concrete views about how they do and do not like to work. In my experience, YMMV.

Ilana, that's a lovely idea. I really like the biscotti idea along with the coffee and Ann T's Danish is one of my favorites, I can make 4 and they freeze so nicely. Not that there's usually a problem with leftovers, LOL.

OK. If you know me at all, you know I am a night person and rarely am up before 7:30 am.

Today I got up at 4:45 AM!!! and made 7 trays of cinnamon buns. LOVE pioneerwoman's recipe. I made the dough yesterday and kept it overnight in the fridge. Delivered them hot, along with coffee and biscotti to school this morning (by 6:45 am!! and left them in the lunchroom with my business cards (and a copy of my food safety certification - lol)

My kids came home from school and said the teachers were raving about the rolls.

When I went later to pick up the trays and biscotti jar, everything was "licked clean".

Now it's 9:30 and I can barely keep my eyes open.

What a lovely note!! And how great that they all enjoyed the fruits of your labor so much!

I second your shout out to all teachers! Especially to Mrs. Lee who taught me things in first grade that became particularly important when I was in graduate school.

But, I have to demur on being included. I think I really did have a positive effect, but I wasn't teaching for long enough to deserve to be included, and I was lucky enough to be teaching post-adolescents. I offer a special dose of gratitude to middle school teachers!
