How to make this recipe healthier

I like my recipe for bran muffins but I want to make substitutions to make it healthier. I don't bake much so I need help. What other place has such an abundance of baking talent? Only the cooking forum.

The first thing I want to do is cut down the sugar. I've never baked with artificial sweeteners or applesauce. I wouldn't know what sweetener to use.

The second thing is that I should probably get rid of (or cut down) the Crisco.

Can anyone help me out? Here's my recipe:

Refrigerator Bran Muffins

2 cups boiling water

2 cups Hodgson Mill (unprocessed) wheat bran

1 cup Crisco shortening

3 cups sugar

4 beaten eggs

1 quart buttermilk

2 cups white flour

3 cups whole wheat flour

5 tsp baking soda

1 Tablespoon salt

4 cups Kellogg's All Bran or Bran-Buds cereal

Mix together water, wheat bran, Crisco, sugar eggs, buttermilk in large bowl. In a separate bowl mix together flours baking soda and salt. Mix together the two mixtures. Lastly add Kellogg's All-Bran or Bran-Buds. It is now ready to use if you wish. Put in tightly covered containers and refrigerate. It will keep in refrigerator if tightly covered. Bake a batch as needed at 400 degrees for 15 minutes or until tested done.

Thanks!
