Lennox AC (10ACB) TurnsON /no Blower working on Furnace.

Lennox 10ACB36-5P (1997)
Furnace is Coleman Evcon Model BGU10016A.
Thermostat Hunter Air Temp Plus Model 44422

I just turned my AC on first time in a year. The Lennox AC seems to be working fine outside the house. The fan on top of the AC is running smoothly and the unit seems to be running at normal speed. Inside, the ducts on the furnace are getting cold but the blower in the furnace to blow the cold air throughout the house is not working. I've left it on for an hour, no luck. Now, If I turn the furnace on to heat... the blower works blowing heat throughout the house. Just the AC can't get the blower to work in the furnace. Any help would be appreciated. I have all the manuals for the Lennox and my logic leads me to believe it might be the Start Capacitor C7, or the Potential Start Relay K31. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Turn the T-stat to 'Fan Only' and see if the fan works.

Ok... I'm getting somewhere. I turned the tstat from auto to fan. The fan worked. Then I turned on the AC. The AC is working and pumping air through the registers. Now I turned the fan only to AUTO... and the air is still on and the blower is working. I then turned off the AC totally. Switched the fan to AUTO and turn on the Air Again. Its working.

What does that mean? Do I need a new Thermostat?

Thank you in advance. Wow! I don't want to say genius, but heh... it sure seems like it! The do it yourself.com forum were suggesting circuit board failure and wanting me to do testing with the blower. So far... Thanks to you, maybe I won't have to do this.

I do feel it's best to let somone fix it for you but maybe not. Anyhow,here's where the problem seems to be. YOU STATED "Also when is the gas exhaust fan supposed to come on? I think in one try it did not turn on. Later I fed power directly to the motor but it did not help." The "gas exhust fan" is known as induced draft. If it didn't run when "fed power directly" the motor should be replaced. My reluctance was for good cause which is recconizable to one who works in the trade. Far too much can be lost in translation while dealing with flamable gas or electricty. Dealing with both at once is invitation for disaster. Here is an example. When you said "Later I fed power directly to the motor but it did not help." That could mean the draft motor still didn't run,,,, OR,,,,,it could mean the blower motor still didn't come on. No harm,no foul but such way of comunicating is not good while working on gas and electrical. Engineers pride themselves on being exact so you should understand where I'm coming from.

You should definitely be pricing with just heat pump. I live in NC which probably is a bit colder in the winter. We get down to the teens but only 15 nights a year maybe. Our winter average low is about 30. Under 10 degrees is definitely a news story. I have 5000 sq ft. I'm looking at my NG bill of $30. I have dual fuel and seer 16 heat pumps. Last winter was very cold and I spent about $700 with $200 being gas. This winter is going to be $120 in gas. My electric rates are similar to yours without the first 1000 discount. What is my point? Your gas usage will likely be $100 a year. Even if that were replaced with all heating strips, you'd be saving $200 a year or so. Since it would probable be 80% heat pump still, the dual fuel is only saving you $40 a year. So a $2500 furnace to save $40 a year seems a little crazy (on dollars alone). Turns out for me, it is probably worth it but only marginally so. I have a 90% (which you should be able to do as mine is basement with horizontal PVC exhaust). It probably saves $60-$70 on an average year. Probably cost $2000 (new house - I can't remember). What is that a 30 year payback (or never if you count interest or NG rates increase)? You do get some flexibility and you can setback at will with dual fuel. That is worth something.

because fan runs in fan on(according to him) . ran just fine in a/c according to him the only common thing that doesn't run is low speed fan for heat. low speed fan is turned on by different relay on control board than high speed fan (which works according to poster). can't be cap because cap doesn't work sometimes and not others. can be low on capacitance and overheating motor but it still would not run ok some of the time as stated. best i could do with info given.

The first order of business is to find a contractor that will do a proper load calculation. The contractors you have talked to so far are guessing at the size, or sizing based on area which almost always leads to over sized equipment. A condensing furnace (90%+) efficiency can be installed in an attic provided you know how to do it. It requires wrapping electric heat tape on the condensate line. This will keep the condensate from freezing. See if you can find a contractor who will do this for you. There are several Carrier furnaces which are 21 inches wide. You would need to check the depth. I would think a 80K BTU furnace at 95% efficiency would keep the second floor toasty. I would rather see you spend money removing the attic pull down stair rather spending the money on twin furnaces. Getting an 80% efficiency furnace would not be terrible, but the last two winters in Ohio have been brutal. The extra money for a higher efficiency furnace is going to pay for itself in few years.

Any suggestions on thermostats if I need one? I'd like to get one of those new types... like NEST, and some of the newer ones I've seen you can access through your cell phone in TV Commercials.

Can't say for certain your issue, but those Hunter thermostats are cheap low end and are known for being problematic.

I am not a fan of these lifestyle thermostats that sometimes can shortchange a high end system's capabilities. Definitely not Nest.

With an unmatched system like yours, I would just go for a good basic HW dig thermostat, programmable if you are inclined.

Thanks so far... I'm almost there. Now Its obvious I don't have the 5th C wire. I want to add another wire from thermostat and run it to the furnace. I can't get a hold of Coleman (Seems they are on an Extended Lunch Hour). I've included a pic to help you help me do the right thing here. I've traced everything correctly in showing the Thermostat and the AC wire. Tried my best in filling in all the blanks with the illustrations. Next to the 1-5 screws I have showed the color of the wire that is attached to each screw from the thermostat. Where should I attach the C wire that I am going to add to the new thermostat? What type of wire/guage should I get from Home Depot?

1=White/Gray
2=Green

4=Red
5=Blue

Go look at the existing thermostat and see if the terminals are labeled. Then write down the label->color arrangement.

Everything looks alright. I am the original owner and never had this motherboard switched out. House is 17 years old. Only thing is that it looks like the builder used a blue wire rather than a yellow.

So it looks like the 3 is the common... RIGHT?

How come the color of the thermostat wire bundle change from white to grey in the two photos? Is this the same wire?

It looks like terminal 3 has a red wire connected to it. Where does it go? Red is not a typical color for ground. Have you verified this with a volt meter?

Did you verify the thermostat is not energizing the G terminal when the fan is in the auto position and the AC is calling for cooling. If it is then the thermostat is working and the problem is some where else.
