Mr. Slim MS-A12WA

I installed a Mr. Slim MS-A12WA (12,000 btu) cool only air conditioner this year. I had it started up by a local technician and even he was impressed with how it cools and how quiet it is. I am not a bit sorry I purchased this unit!

I've had some experience with HVAC systems in the past but this one uses R410A refrigerant which to me is a strange animal. My question is: Is it normal for the high side line to be cold??? The condenser throws out heat just like it should, but the fact that the high side line is cold has the technician and I baffled. The evaporator is not icing up which would normally indicate a low charge. Is this something I should be concerned with even though it works great? I'm using it to cool a 400 sq. ft. room with a 13' vaulted ceiling and it cools it down in no time and puts out plenty of condensate.

Any ideas would be great!

Jim, the metering device, TXV, on those Mr Slims is in the outdoor section so feeling a cold liquid line is normal. Matter of fact the suction line and the liquid line should both be insulated. Some guys bundle both lines together into a single armaflex tube. This is the wrong way to do it and can cause a problem down the road. Spend a few bucks on 1/4 or 5/16 ID by 3/8 wall armaflex and insulate the entire line.

Nice to know that this is normal. I was wondering about bundeling the lines together myself. The directions have a tiny illustration that shows the lines together and since the stub outs (which are about 18" long) from the evaporator are bundeled together I just followed suit and went the same all the way. I did insulate the lines also. Since both lines run at about the same temperature I didn't think there would be a problem. To change it now would be quite a chore! What kind of problems could I expect in the future if I leave it this way? Also do you have any idea where I can get R410A, because if I change it, I'm going to need it!

I'm further south but my peppers are under a large white oak and only get about 2 to 2 and a quarter hours of late morning sun after the sun rises over the house. My plants are healthy but leggy and not as bushy and prolific as the ones I see in photos on this forum, but they produce more peppers than the 2 of us need. The only pepper I've grown from your list is cayenne. One year they were prolific in a 1 gallon pot and one year they weren't. The difference was probably soil or water. Good luck to your aunt.

Unless you plan to save seeds from the open pollinated varieties (no point in saving seeds from hybrids) then it makes no difference if you mix them in the rows. As mentioned the odds of them crossing are minimal and it only affects the seeds anyway. Check out the FAQ here on Cross Pollination. However cross pollination isn't really the issue - shading each other is. Some the varieties you list are much larger plants and a couple are smaller. Intermixing the varieties can lead to support difficulties too. So why intermix them? Plant the same variety in a group within each row so you can adjust the FW cords as needed and keep the MS and BWs from shading out the CP and BK.. Normal spacing for plants is 3' but with FW you can plant at 2'. Any closer and IMO you will have to do a great deal of pruning to keep them in control. Dave

Where do you live? How big is your home? What sources of energy are available to you; at what rates? Has a Manual J heat gain/loss calculation been done? Has a Manual D calculation been done to design a forced air duct system? The old radiators would have been used for heating only. Chilled water would not have been circulated to the old rads in A/C mode, as condensation would form due to sweating. However, you still have a choice as to the type of distribution method, forced air or hydronic. Force air means installing a duct system as you have been planning, perhaps zoned. Hydronic means installing fan coil units that would be fed by insulated small diameter pipes. That would likely be a far less invasive renovation. The installers may limit you in your area; generally geothermal contractors prefer forced air. Find a geothermal contractor that has experience installing in-floor radiant heating. This would be a better choice. The best choice would be a large HVAC company that has expertise installing all manor of heating systems including geothermal hybrid systems that could be a combination of different technologies and sources of energy. Keep in mind that forced air will require at least 2 or more heat pumps. Liquid to water, hydronic distribution can be done with just 1heat pump. This may also mean a less complicated connection to the ground loop system. As an example of a hydronic fan coil unit see link at bottom of post. These units can heat with water temperature as low as 100ÃÂF - perfect for geothermal! They can also be ordered with hand held remote controls making each unit a separate zone by simply controlling the temperature and fan speed wirelessly. Hello, Would like to know how many BTUs (for 1 wallmount system)would I need for two floors of 690 sqfeet (each floor). The Unit will be on the 2nd floor in the middle between 2 bedrooms and a washroom (over washroom door facing master bedroom). It will be a dual split system. ------------------------------------- Also would like to know which is a safe reliable cost efficient brand, example of wall mounted (split systems) air conditions I've heard of: Fujitsu (they give 10 years warranty parts and labour) Mitsubishi (6 yrs parts and labour however been making them longer) Daikin (6 yrs parts and labour) Igloo York Carrier Grey All about the same price... ----------------------------------- Finally, is it better to get a dual system (with heat pump), from my understanding they are almost the same price and the advantage is that it has a variable BTU which may save some $$. Since the heat pump will be at the higher level then it wont heat as much however it is coming at about the same price. Then again more electronics in a system more chances of malfunctioning sooner? If a good length of the liquid line is exposed to heat and sunlight it could cause some of the liquid to flash off in the line before it hits the evap and effect the efficiency. I would tend to think this would also raise the superheat. To the point where it could might shorten the life of the compressor because of running at a higher temp though is anybodys guess. Another more obvious reason is condensation along the entire length of the line which could be messy on the walls, etc.
As for acquiring 410A you need to be certified for refrigerant recovery to buy some. If you have previous HVAC experience then you probably know that the operating pressures of 410A are much higher then conventional refrigerants, 800# is common. They could burst regular guage hoses, especially if they're worn a little. Seen it happen.

The line from the evaporator goes into a small area above a closet and then it goes down in a stud cavity and out the wall where it goes for about another 4' to the condenser. This is the only section of tubing that is exposed to the elements and it lives between the condenser unit and the wall. The line is insulated all the way and I can't see any evidence of sweating. The stud cavity the lines are in is also going to be filled with R19 insulation. Yes, I opted to bury the tubing and the electrical lines in the wall rather than running them through a chase outside the building. I just think it makes for a neater installation.
