Have you heard of Blumenthal Cookware?

A friend of hubby's has some sets of Blumenthal Cookware that he's selling. These are brand new and he bought a bunch to sell.

They're VERY expensive but is selling them at a reasonable price to unload them.

I've tried doing a search on the set, but can only find out stuff about Heston Blumenthal, the scientific-minded chef....someone that Dcarch is familiar with I'm sure!! LOL

Anyway, just wondering if you've heard of this cookware.

LOL!

I admire Heston Blumenthal. I seriously doubt that with his focus and accomplishmentd in the art and science of gastronomy that he would be interested in making cookware.

My fantasy would be to eat in his restaurant, the FAT DUCK. To make a reservation, you need to call two months ahead. Calling two month in advance may not mean you are going to get a reservation.

I think it will cost you about $1,000 per meal, but the experience is worth $2,000.

Nevedr heard of it.....and Google yields nothing.
I would call the set a "leaverite"....as in leave her right there....

I bought three Scanpan items: 2 saucepans and one 10" skillet, all stainless steel (no nonstick). I've been very very happy with them. They are remarkably responsive to heat - love them. I bought them at a local Tuesday Morning, but haven't seen them again there, or at Marshalls/HomeGoods. Good luck with them!

I have had some SS, some calphalon anodized and some copper clad (calphalons and one mauviel). I would say cooking in SS vs anodized and copper clad made a huge difference in the quality of food that I turned out. One more thing: calphalon copper thickness is so small that it really performs very identical to anodized. If you like the look, you might consider. Mauviel, sure, is a class apart. Much more pricey too. Also, I have pretty thin wrists and therefore, lifting Mauviel is definitely trouble. It scares me to think how I will use it as I get older -- because your bones only get weaker, and I know of people who have fractured their wrists in the process. I also have cast iron wok I once got in an Asian store. It is non-enameled, non-seasoned, and made of very thin cast iron. IMO, for slow cooking over retained heat it cannot be beaten. (e.g stir frying greens). I have never tried Le Creuset, however I imagine that it would be very heavy, just like a mauviel. In terms of types of utensils, I think you should ask yourself which of your current pots/pans you use often and start with that shape/size in materials listed above. Hope this helps! Leave it to Kat to take this idea south! lol Haley, you be sure to let us know how it goes, OK? And I'm happy to be able to provide you with an idea! Gayle, if shipping wasn't an issue, I think a KT swap would be fun, but doing it in person with local friends is probably easier and wouldn't cost anyone anything. I could probably do one of these a year and in a few years have my entire Christmas in the City village gone from the attic. lol I think one of these swaps is right up some of our alleys, those of us who like to scour yard sales and flea markets and antique malls..... And a great excuse to clean out the cupboards. Another benefit- you'd know that your things are going to your friends, not be marked up and resold somewhere, but to be used and appreciated! (I laugh when I see my stuff from the last yard sale in someone's booth at the antique mall, marked up 700%. I know who she is and when she bought some things from me and then came back the next day to return them, I got so annoyed. She really just wanted a partial refund and to keep what she bought, which I found astounding. I gave her ALL her money back and KEPT the items, I would rather donate the stuff than to play her little game. I finally started telling her that her purchases were final, period. You shouldn't have to say that at a yard sale!) Yeah, Moni- that worked out really well and was fun, too!

Induction can highlight uneven heating in a pan. Cast iron needs to preheat for quite a while before it's fairly even across the bottom. All-Clad is okay, as is Tramontina, but I have hot and cool spots with mine. My most used pan is A-C because of the floor space, so it's obviously not a deal-breaker for me. I love using my 9.5" Demeyere Proline skillet and the 11" 5+/ Industry5 twin that's called Zwilling Sensation. They're much more even than any of my A-C and respond quickly. Proline are very heavy, though. Different cooking methods have different requirements. I'll spend the money on any skillet, sauté, rondeau, or saucier. They're my workhorses and I want them to perform so well that I hardly need to check. You can go mid-range for saucepans but look for a nice, thick conductive base for even heating. Inexpensive for stock/pasta pot (I'm thinking Ikea here because enameled steel will scorch pasta), cast iron, carbon steel, and non-stick. That's not to say I wouldn't upgrade any of my mid-low range cookware if I came across a deal. I absolutely would!

They say it's from Lebonstain in Italy... I also found Blumenthal & Wise Cookware... Unfortunately all the sites I found, with Bing, are wholesaler's sites who want your name, address, telephone number and business e-mail address... BUT the sites I checked out mention China.

Hahaha Dcarch. I KNEW you'd be an admirer of his. I've seen a few of his shows, and don't know where. Probably our Food Network, but they aren't on anymore. Our lovely Food channel keeps dropping actual food shows e.g. Big Daddy, Tyler Florence etc (whom I really like), in favour of competitions and huge gastronomical pigs who can see who can eat the largest and greasiest concoctions.

Anyway, the google searches I came up with showed some for sale on Kijiji.......$250-$500. They have glass lids, and a built-in thermometer. Use less water and fats for cooking. 18/10 I think. I just don't know anything about them, and wondered if you folks had. I thought they might have been German made but I could be mistaken.

Jasdip, I Googled & found this site in addition to the Kijiji pages.
If I am understanding correctly,
There are two 'brands',
Blumenthal-Wise Cookware,
And Blumenthal Bavaria Cookware.

The sites I read certainly make it sound good,
But I had never heard of it before.
Maybe it is pretty much a Canadian thing?

Can you actually visually inspect it,
And put your hands on it?
(as opppsed to ordering sight unseen).
Would he offer any kind of return policy?

I've never heard of that rand either, but your description sounds a lot like the "waterless" cookware that's been marketed here for outrageous prices for years by direct markets.

I found it the waterless stuff really cheap on Amazon, 18/10 surgical stainless, thermometers in lids, etc. Just type in waterless cookware and I did find one book called something like "Is that newfangled cookware safe" by Dale Blumenthal. since the selling point of the waterless stuff is that everything else is bad for you, it seems like there could be a connection...

Annie, I was thinking about the same thing.

For sure Heston Blumenthal has nothing to do with "Waterless cookware". The whole concept does not make much scientific sense to me.

I have never found glass lids useful. You still need to lift them to see what's going on because it is always steamed up. The thermometer in the glass lid's knob can't be measuring temperature of food accurately. Why surgical stainless steel? 7 layers of metal will not make it better then 3-ply for heat distribution.

Direct marketing, dcarch. The woman who did the "free dinner" for Amanda was pushing hard on the cookware, with the glass lids and the thermometer, she could cook things just right, without fat, the surgical steel was so "pure", etc. We were poisoning ourselves and our children with non-stick and aluminum would give us all Alzheimer's, we needed to buy several thousand dollars worth of cookware RIGHT NOW!

I asked a lot of the "wrong" questions, pointed out that all the food was bland, asked where she went to school since she was passing herself off as a "chef", did she have a degree? I also had to tell her that I'd owned a health food store, that the studies linking aluminum and Alzheimer's were found to be flawed and more evidence was not yet available, that her thermometer was of no use in telling the temperature of the food itself.

She didn't like me, and she didn't make a sale, although it actually was pretty nice cookware. Just not thousands of dollars worth of nice.
