Gal with the missing daughter???

After I read beeohio's post about Stacy and her daughter, I thought about a gal (and for the life of me I cannot remember her name) that last spring/summer posted about not seeing her daughter for weeks/months. I believe at one time she finally contact her, but the daughter really didn't want anything to do with her mom.

Whoever, you are, I hope things have improved; for you AND your daughter! :) You've been on my heart lately!

Juellie, just saw your post and wanted to respond. I am the one with the missing daughter (who has been found) and am touched that you have been thinking of me. It has beena nd will continue to be a long process but my daughter has been in touch with us off and on. I was diagnosed with colon cancer in October and my other daughters notified her. She sent flowers and came to see me in the hospital. I know she is trying but Im really not sure what she is doing. She is living in DC with a "friend". She didn't come for Christmas although we had transportation planned and someone to pick her up at the metro. That was really tough- - even though I was angry I missed her so much. The long and short of it is that she does seem to be improved as far as the drugs go but still has many other issues to work through. She is supposed to come to see me this weekend but I never know if she will follow through. I worry about her all the time and just hope for the best. Again, thank you so much for thinking of us. Oh, Satine, I'm so glad to hear she is in touch with you! I know it's not perfect, but progress is progress. I'm not so glad to hear about your illness. How are you doing with that?

The only reason larger specimens dug out of the ground are more affected by the move is that in practice a smaller proportion of roots come away with them, due to the weight and size of the larger balls. Plants in pots will establish quicker than plants in field soil balls for the same reason - the balled and burlapped stock is missing some of its roots. Often there are barely more feeder roots still present on such specimens than on bare-rooted plants overwintered in a cool storage facility. As mentioned, a common variable is that container-grown stock is frequently rootbound and should be bare-rooted at planting. However, unless most of the roots need to be pruned at planting, due to defects there will still be more feeder roots left on the plant than is usual with plants acquired balled in burlap. And these need to be bare-rooted at planting as well, since there was often a period of time spent in a small, confining pot before planting out in a field occurred. And you do not want to install into the final planting site with coarse potting medium or fine field soil on the roots, forming a pocket of different-textured material surrounded by native soil of perhaps quite dissimilar structure. When nursery plants are put in the ground with intact rootballs there can be failures due to movement of water into and out of such rootballs being affected in undesirable ways. In addition to those deformed roots not being resolved. I had foundation shrubs perhaps 20 years in place fall over in the snow one year. When I dug them up they had root knots at the bases of the stems dating way back to when they were left in small pots too long by the production nursery. The most consistent and obvious examples I see here are camellias sent up from certain large wholesale grower(s) in California, with turnip-like or square roots often visible above the potting medium. For this reason I seldom buy camellias at garden centers here. Grafted conifers and other small grafted stock is also so often trapped on badly deformed, j-rooted or corksrew rootstocks at outlets here that they seldom get money from me for these groups either. The last time I bought a grafted conifer - labeled as having come from a high-profile Oregon grower whose catalogs have a history of crowing about their high quality - the rootstock consisted of a hair-like braid that went down and then up in a j, like a tail or fishhook. Seeing no way to correct it without killing the specimen, I threw the whole thing away instead of wasting additional time planting a tree that seemed certain to fail later. A way needs to be found to generate enough of a backlash to get production nurseries to stop spewing out rootbound trash. In the meantime buyer beware. Very aware.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I have a couple of very close female friends who were involved with my son or were good friends with my daughter when she was living. I am very close to them, also. I consider them family and would be very upset if something happened to them. I can understand your pain as well as your guilt. Like Susan said, don't beat yourself up for the negative thoughts. We are all human. It sounds like you were a great friend to her. You obviously didn't let on that at times you didn't feel like talking. Cheri~ As appalling as this situation sounds, and I am very sorry for you, are you able to clearly separate fact from hearsay? I would be very angry, too, but in time I think I would would be afraid for what has happened to my daughter. Was it a breakdown, do you know for a fact she left on her own, can you confirm any of this? Once you know the facts, from there you can sort it out. Her life is not your life, and if she still desires to have a relationship with you, she will at some point, know she has to explain something. In this situation, it is most important to disregard things you hear from others and focus on what you have heard from her directly. Good Luck

Hi ladies. What a good feeling I got when I logged on this am and saw the messages for me. I don't post here too often because I feel that most of my news is a downer and I don't want to be known for that! I do read the forum every day that I am at work and feel that I know some of you personally. You are all such a good group. As far as my health goes I am doing well. Had surgery the beginning of October and was told all the cancer was removed and 19 of 19 lymph nodes were clean so no chemo or radiation needed. I developed a blood clot a week or so after discharge so spent another week in the hospital on blood thinners and 2 more units of blood. I consider myself very lucky and I am working hard at looking at all my blessings and appreciating life. Again, thank you for your concern. Satine

Satine, don't ever feel like you're a downer! That's what "friends" are for; to lift up, support and help! I'm a later-comer here, so I don't know you like some of the others do. However, it has really been put on my heart lately to help others. I really do wish I could do something for you.

I have been very blessed in my life, with good health and an awesome husband. I've had my share of "issues" with my son, but in general, I am a very lucky woman.

Oh Satine, please let us know how you are doing, don't think that you are a downer. Friends do this for one another. This week folks may help hold you up but next week you may be offering support and kind words to another. Everyone holds a special place at the table and everyone takes a turn.

What wonderful news, I'm so glad that you are on the mend and that you have had some contact with your daughter.

Good morning. I enjoyed reading your responses and they really do help. As I said I am trying to focus on my blessings which include two other daughters, three grand daughters and a new one due in July. I have wonderful memories of my late husband who was my rock and best friend. I have a wonderful sister and I am attending a support group because of depression and the people in the group are supportive to each other and the leader is a doll. I have a job from which I am going to be retiring soon (I hope) and a wonderful new to me home which is perfect for me. I really do have much to be thankful for and am working hard at keeping myself from "hittng bottom". Mammie, you are right life does sometimes deal us some nasty stuff and Juellie, thanks for the email and good wishes. Satine

Hi satine,

You'll find a listening ear here (usually several of them - mainly one per person), when you're feeling on the edge of depression ... or whenever you feel like coming.

Quite likely some worthwhile suggestions, as well.

In any case, as you've just found out, it is really nice to know that some folks, even at a distance, are concerned.
