'Chapter Books' for a 7-year old?
Comments (29)My Ds might be the same way (he's only 10, so no parking tickets yet, but forgetting his lunchbox or his homework at school - though never a book!). He is continually reading - even if we're going somewhere - we were taking the kids to a 6pm show at the circus 35-40 minutes away and he had to take a book in the car! I don't know how he can read in the car - I always got motion sickness when I tried. I think he stays up late at night reading and that's why he's so tired in the AM - send him to bed b/t 8:30-9pm, get him up at 7, and he's dragging. When he was about 4 (in preschool, but I forget whether it was PS1 or PS2 - he went for 2 yrs) he explained to his teacher how cell phones worked - he had seen the towers, asked about the antennas, and so I told him the basics. She was impressed - but that's what you get when you have an engineer and a computer geek for parents! He was always asking questions. Now of course he thinks Mom's the dumbest person on earth, always wants Dad to help him with homework - I had to convince him the other night that I really did know how to add fractions! Though by the time he gets to calculus I might need to brush up. DD is just more interested in animals and flowers than technology - and I'm not good at biology/botany so I have a hard time answering her questions....See MoreLasagna Menu for 60th birthday party
Comments (5)Jenn this is one of my all time favorite dinner party menus. Being vegetarian, I offer roasted eggplant dip, hummus or spinach dip with toasted pita wedges. This is always a big hit with everyone. The great thing is, you can buy all of these dips at a decent grocery store with a good deli. The eggplant dip often goes by the baba ganouj or baba ganoush moniker. I make my own because it is dead easy, just grill or roast a peeled large eggplant with a good coating of olive oil, add a small jar of roasted red peppers, and some salt and pepper to taste and give this all a good whirl in the food processor. Add a small splash of balsamic vinegar or lemon juice to keep it fresh longer. If you think it still needs some zip you can add any of the following: tahini, mayonaise, cumin, oregano or aleppo peper. Of course for 60 you might need a COUPLE of large eggplants, lol!...See Morenew year's eve party menu -any suggestions?
Comments (16)I made these last year and although it sounds like an unusual combination of ingredients, after people tried them, they didn't last long. SAVORY DATE RUGELACH  makes 4 dozen 1 cup butter (2 sticks), softened 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened 2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 tsp salt 1 1/2 cups walnuts, divided 4 oz. blue cheese, cut into cubes 48 pitted dates (about 12 oz.) 1 large egg white 1 tsp. water Dough: In large bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat butter and cream cheese until creamy. Stir in flour and salt just until blended (or use mixer on low speed). Divide dough into 4 equal pieces; flatten each into a disk. Wrap each in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight. Filling: In food processor with knife blade attached, pulse ½ cup walnuts until finely chopped; reserve in small bowl. In same food processor, pulse blue cheese and remaining 1 cup of walnuts 7 to 8 times or until a coarse mixture forms. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line 2 large cookie sheets with foil; grease foil. (I used parchment paper.) On floured surface with floured rolling pin, roll 1 disk of dough into a 10-inch round. Cut into 12 equal wedges. Beginning 1 inch from outside edge, sprinkle 1/2 cup blue cheese mixture in 2 Âinch wide ring on dough, leaving dough exposed in center. Place one whole date crosswise on wide end of each wedge. Starting at wide end, roll up each wedge, jelly-roll fashion. Place rugelach, 1 inch apart, on cookie sheets, point side down. Repeat with remaining four dough disks. In small bowl, beat egg white and water. Brush rolls with egg white and sprinkle with reserved walnuts. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until golden, rotating sheets between upper and lower racks halfway through baking. Let stand for a minute or two and then transfer to wire racks to cool. Store in a tightly covered container at room temperature up to 3 days. To make ahead: Arrange unbaked rugelach in single layer in jelly roll pan; cover and freeze until firm. Remove from pan and place in freezer containers with waxed paper in between each layer. Seal and freeze up to 3 months. About 45 minutes before serving, preheat oven to 350. Line 2 large cookie sheets with foil; grease foil. Arrange frozen rugelach on prepared cookie sheets and bake 35 to 40 minutes or until golden....See MoreIdeas needed, please for 90 year old birthday
Comments (22)I never "got" the point of spending money on gag gifts... I always try to get people something they can use or something they like or something they can *do*. Take photos & put in a scrapbook. Get photos from his family & make a scrapbook. If he reads, get a nice reading lamp with a fluorescent or soft white bulb & maybe a magnifier, like the lamps cross-stitchers use. big can (do we still call them cans now that they're plastic?) of his favorite coffee. renew his fishing license for him. subscription to National Geographic or other magazine. Give him a squeeze from his Kitchen Table nieces!...See Morecyn427 (z. 7, N. VA)
