I bought the menfolk all their own battery powered fly swatters a few years ago. They look like a small tennis racket, and the fly is zapped by the wires in the mesh of the racket. Quite entertaining, and it works. You don't have to smoosh a fly in order to kill it and end up needing to clean the tabletop where the deed happened with this device.

What are his hobbys? Check the Current website as they do have some cute (and useful ideas). Are you near a large Mall? Sometimes there is a store (cannot think of the name) that has all sorts of cute ( and some not so cute) things.--jokes etc. Even Barnes and Noble have small things too. Hope this helps

I got one of those zapper swatters at Steinmart but I have seen them at lots of stores including I think walmart.

what about a funny cap or hat I have seen some with some really cute sayings on them for the older guys. My husband loves caps and has a few of those.

I saw a bbq apron recently that said this old guy can still light your fire. And one that was something about still being hot, all really cute. You can have those printed also for pretty cheap.

You know how every year there's a list of stuff that anyone born after 1982, etc, have never experienced. Make up you own listing of stuff he's seen change since 1923. Boy when you think about it, there's a lot of stuff that's happened! TIME was first published in 1923.

buy a LARGE birthday card, and go to walmart, or walgreens, or the mall... and ask everyone to write something or sign their name.

Get 90 signatures!

I did this for my sis, on her 50th. She loved it.

Glenda - I have only lurked here, post more on the cooking forum, but I made one of these chocolate bar cards for my dad for his 80th birthday and he got a real kick out of it. There are endless variations and you are only limited by your imagination. Posterboard from the dollar store and a dozen chocolate bars and you have a great, humorous gift for about 15.00.

Why funny? I like the idea of something with a wow factor, because that is what I think of when someone turns 90.
Only you really know their sense of humor.
I like the idea of 90 signatures Or what has happened in history in the last 90 years.
(I look at 40 or 50 as the year of gag type gifts)

Put a certificate in a nice frame. On the certificate list all his accomplishments over his lifetime, including reaching 90. Ask him, his family and friends to give you the information and ask them to sign it. You can have it professionally printed at Kinko's or any print shop.

I never "got" the point of spending money on gag gifts...

I always try to get people something they can use or something they like or something they can *do*.

Take photos & put in a scrapbook.

Get photos from his family & make a scrapbook.

If he reads, get a nice reading lamp with a fluorescent or soft white bulb & maybe a magnifier, like the lamps cross-stitchers use.

big can (do we still call them cans now that they're plastic?) of his favorite coffee.

renew his fishing license for him.

subscription to National Geographic or other magazine.

Give him a squeeze from his Kitchen Table nieces!

I went to the 100th birthday party of a friend's grandmother a couple years ago and gave her 100 home-baked cookies, in a big box. I packaged them in groups of eight in Zip-lock bag, so she could freeze them easily. For the next year, I'd get texts from my friend saying, "Gram and I are enjoying some of your cookies right now!"

Pleased with my purchase. He and wife will get a kick out of the cartoons and cute jokes!

Give him a model of a 90 yr old car, truck, locomotive, tractor, or anything made 90 yrs ago; That would be a 1923 model.

Search the government on-line patent files. Look for whacky things patented in 1923. Print out a copy and frame it.

Search newspaper files for headlines of interest in 1923. Print copies and assemble a collage.

Look for births of prominent people who were born in the same year he was. Print copies and frame. Title it: "You were in good company".

Now if you could find an almanac from 1923, that could be interesting. Maybe you could locate something from used book seellers.

I was at a 90th surprise party earlier this summer. I brought my camera and took as many pictures as I could. I am now working on making a picture book through Shutterfly to give him as his gift. He was so overwhelmed at seeing all the faces he hadn't seen in a while, I am hoping he will be able to enjoy and share the photos when he is home and relaxed.

How about a coin sorter/counter? I don't have a link, it looks like a bank in that you drop a coin in the slot, it rolls to the right chute based on size and they stack up. You then remove and roll them in wrappers.

hallmark used to print out a front pace in the day you were born...you can do it online....

omg sorry I just noticed how dreadfully out of date this post was..

I think gag gifts are a waste of money. For my 60th birthday, I flew from CA to NJ to visit cousins. They gave me all kinds of "Over the Hill" gag gifts which I threw away as soon as I returned home. I would rather have had just one small book, picture frame, etc. that I could keep forever.

A spammer brought it back up and I posted it as a spam alert and apparently that spam and my warning got removed, good !
