tell me quick - can I use my waffle iron for panini?

Okay, you can can go ahead and tell me that of all the stupid questions I've asked (and usually on a last minute basis, like this time), this is the stupidest. I know.

But can I?

The panini makers at the store look a lot like waffle irons to me.

If not, what's the best way to try to get that crunchy, dense effect, with what I have in the house? I do have a griddle, a broiler, etc.

I want to do goat cheese and roasted red pepper on fairly sturdy bread, if that makes a difference.

You might be able to use yours, but I cannot use mine because it does not open enough to get a sandwich inside. I use two cast iron skillets instead and put the sandwich in the large one and the smaller skillet (heated) on top of it. Or you could put the sandwich on your griddle and put a heated cast iron skillet on top of the sandwich.

Probably not. Panini machines have a weighted top that help squish the top half down. Many also cook on both top and bottom. As Lars stated the waffle maker isn't hinged in the right way to open up enough. He does have a great idea for a make shift panini grill thou. A heated cast iron pan is just the right weight for the top part. NancyLouise

Another All-Clad owner here. For years, my waffle iron was a stove top Nordic Ware one. I reluctantly purchased a VillaWare when we had the boys, had grandparents over, etc.The stovetop was just too slow. The VillaWare was still working when DH and the boys gave me an All-Clad for Mother's Day a few years ago. I was prepared to return it but thought I ought to try it and at least be able to say it wasn't that special first. It didn't go back. The All-Clad bakes the most even and perfect waffles I've had. Never had one stick -- never had any problem with it, except making me want the All-Clad slow cooker (talked myself out of it because it's so large and the boys will both be off at college soon). We made waffles Sunday. I commented on how light they were and my son said we make the best waffles he's ever had. Not only that -- he wants some of my sourdough started so he can make them when he leaves home. Good thing that made my heart smile 'cuz it's gonna cost the pocket another All-Clad waffle iron (or two -- one for older brother). ;-)

Here's one recipe I found.....I have never made them..but when I have eaten them they they were seasoned with cardamon. This recipe calls for a teaspoon of ground cardamon.....think that may be a bit much!! Here in the middle of the country, there are a lot of 3rd generation Scandanavians, and some how they get their pastries mixed up. My Danish neighbor would come over at Christmas with something that looked for all the world like the krumkaka that my Swedish mother in law made. My friend, Gerda made the waffles as well as other wonderful little treats. And then there's my Dutch friends with names like Schakel and Knoot! All make wonderful goodies! The tator tots in the waffle iron is one of the life hacks you see on facebook. The idea was to make a "waffle/roll" for a hamburger out of tator tots. Looked better online than IRL. They do taste really good in the waffle iron but don't hold together. The grid gets greasy and gets tiny bits of food in it that seem impossible to clean. I keep chopsticks around just for cleaning jobs like this but it wasn't working. I really think the tator tots did it in with way too much grease. DD keeps making them for lunch in the iron instead of using the oven. Right now some life stuff came up but hopefully by next week I can start searching for a new waffle iron. Maybe keep the old one if the kids want to do the tots in it but then they have to clean it. Thank you for the recommendations and the link posted above. I will check it out.

I just had my first homemade toaster waffle with heated berries in their own juice and it was remarkably good. Pretty much the same experience as good frozen waffles I've purchased. The semi-flabby, non-crispiness pre-freezing is pretty much rectified when it gets toasted. Big duh. The size is perfect (square waffle iron segmented into quarters). I know that there's too much sugar in the recipe I used. I think I'd reduce from 3 Tbs. to 1, just to give it some balance. I might add a little more butter, but maybe everything's okay except for the sugar. If I don't need a new waffle iron, how can that be a bad thing? :) I'll see what a recipe tweak does. Fresh waffles are one thing if you want them crispy, but that's not my reality. The toaster will take care of the crispness.

It worked!

I used bread shaped like a half-oval, with goat cheez and roasted red peppers (not stuffed, just enough) and buttered the outsides of the sandwiches lightly. I heated the waffle iron and put the sandwich in for three minutes, then flipped it and turned it 180 degrees, and then another three minutes. I put a heavy metal casserole on top to weight it down.

It came out thin and crunchy and wonderful! We both liked it a lot. I think you could make a thicker sandwich by peeling it open and inserting more fillings after it's done (i.e., the bread is compressed and crunchy and the cheez is melted).

I think I'll be eating these for breakfasts for a while. Mmmmm

Our waffle iron has a carousel pattern on it, so the sandwiches were amusing as well as yummy.

One of my waffle irons has a reversable grill...flip the waffle side to "non waffle" and it works!!

I put this in about a year and a half ago.

Did not seem to get any interest.

I used Wheat Bread for this one, it is a little darker.

The Waffle Iron makes a nice pattern.
