where can i find a simple cast iron tub?
Comments (9)Americast is very similar to cast iron, in that it's a porcelain surface, but the underlying material is steel coated with acrylic, more or less. So it's nice and solid like iron, not flimsy feeling like uncoated steel, but much lighter weight. There are a number of threads here about it, both pro and con. I'm considering the Cambridge, which is the larger version of the Princeton myself, but it's not cast iron. :)...See Morecast iron bath tub with ugly finish, please advise
Comments (2)Well, you can get it reglazed, but all the activities you list as liking it for will be risky with the new surface, which must be babied more than the original....See MoreHow do I refinish the OUTSIDE of a cast iron tub?
Comments (3)I've been through this, and this is what worked for me (but JamesK's advice is better if you want to spend the money.) I removed the paint with a very vigorous power brush- not your ordinary wire-brush-drill device, but an industrial grade 10" brush mounted on an old 1 hp inline grinder that probably turns at 8,500 rpm or better. It will actually take off some metal as well as all the old paint, and definitely removes rust. It'll remove skin too, and can throw a wire, so be careful and always wear safety glasses, for sure. Then I cleaned the entire surface with rags saturated with paint thinner. Carefully masked off the inside part of the tub. Bought enough spray primer (in cans)to give it two light but thorough coats, and then finished with two coats of my wife's color choice. The spray paint was just an ordinary hardware store grade, if I recall, but higher quality stuff might be worth the cost to you if you can find it. (I used to be able to buy auto paint matched to my car and then put in a spray can. Don't know how they did it or if it's commonly available. It was a little pricey but worked well.) It was a little bit of a challenge keeping it warm enough in the uneated garage as autumn settled in, but I stuck a light buld under it (it was turned upside down for painting) and that seemed to do the trick. That's been 10 years now and it still looks like new. Good luck, Mark ps- I did the clawfeet separately, and left them uncolored, but covered with clear acrylic....See More1930s cast iron tub has no tiling flange... how can I tile the walls?
Comments (5)I renovated my 1939 bath and had my cast iron tub refinished. It was never removed during my renovation. During the renovation, my carpenter removed the old tile (was 1950s, not original) and backing from the walls. The walls and ceiling are plaster. This opened up enough space for him to flash, then use appropriate waterproof board and sealing to install the new tile. I was certain I had "in progress" photos but can't find them -- sorry. I used this shower for a year while the downstairs was renovated. If there had been a leak, I would have known because this is over the living room with plaster ceilings, and I saw what happened when the original sink plumbing leaked and caused the living ceiling to cave in! After renovation:...See MoreMongoCT
