update on DS1 and DIL...they are moving !

We have had a wonderful time with them here but they have been most fortunate to find fabulous jobs. I will link below to the place they have both been hired. It is really exciting for them and a huge step in their careers.

Thank you to those who have been so supportive and thank you also for the heartwarming stories that so many of you shared. It has meant a lot to know that there were "friends" out there wishing them well.

Have a look around the website. It is quite a place. The head chef stated that he wanted them there "yesterday" so they are leaving asap. We are meeting them in a minute to have dinner out and celebrate. We just got back in town from seeing DD in Atlanta so are tired but it is a "good" tired for sure. Thanks again...

Oh if that doesn't look like heaven on earth!!! How wonderful for them. Would love to put that on our list of places to visit 'someday' but whoa! a BIT out of our price range! I can dream, tho.... Congratulations to them - what a wonderful life there.

Hi All, thought I would give an update on the birthday party flaps. So, I extend invitations to SS29 and SGS 8 1/2 to DS7's (he's now 7 hurray!) birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese's last Saturday. DS7 chose the guests, short list including his 1/2 brother SS29 and SGS 8 1/2 and a few other kids friends. SS29's girlfriend, mother of his children, common law wife, calls and says they don't have bus/train fare to come! Nothing new but still a lot of nerve. As they have moved out to the desert, picking them up has become even more of an inconvinience. BUT, for the sake of DS7's birthday, DH does drive to pick up the crew from the desert. He gets there, then gf announces that the baby, SGS 2 1/2, is also coming to be cared for by DD36. Long story short, the crew shows up at Chuck E. Cheese courtesy of DH. Have not eaten, no gifts, dirty clothes it was unbelievable. SS29 spends the whole time playing with SGS 8 1/2, spends no time with my son, the one who invited him, DS7 whose feelings are hurt by this. SD 36 shows up with two more uninvited cousins from BM's side of the family but at least she pays for their play tokens. I won't continue the blow by tacky blow except, Because they live so far, we invited them all, SS29 included, to spend the night at our house, have a nice brunch and take them home. I get home with the balloons and gifts, SS29 has split, taken the bus for which he had supposedly no money to his mother's house to collect some items and basically dumped his kids on us to take care of over the weekend! No clothes, toiletries, no diapers or diaper stuff for the baby! I run down to Wal-Mart to buy pjs, Pull-Ups, diaper cream and a sippy cup. This time though, I let DH handle his people. I went on to church and brunch with my friends the next day after setting the kids up with some outdor games. Did not cook for them and put the Wal-Mart receipt on the counter. By the time I came back, he had insisted that his son, SS29 meet him at the train station to pick up his kids and take them back to the boondocks. If you want a nice LOL, SGS 8 1/2 left his library book at our house. SS29's gf called me and asked that I overnight it to her so it wouldn't be late. It took me a minute to collect myself from her gall. I told her I would pass it on to SD36 who could pass it on to BM, the grandmother, who could pass it on to them. Haven't heard from her since! Geez, they got a bag of new pj's, clothes, diapers, toiletries and fresh toothbrushes, I thought that was pretty good swag for some unexpected and not entirely welcome guests! Anyway, my son enjoyed his birthday admist all of the silly drama. The 2nd party planned at SD36 has been nixed.

Hi. Joining this long thread a little late. My name is Lisa. I'm 35 and currently a SAHM to two boys, ages 6 1/2 and 4. I finished a post-doc in Clinical Psychology 2 1/2 years ago, before moving from Chicago to the Philly area. I plan to go back to work part-time some day but haven't taken steps in that direction yet. I've been married for 10 years to my dh Scott who is a Neurologist specializing in Epilepsy. This is our 2nd house. We've lived here for 2 1/2 years. It's a new construction house, though we didn't design it (when we purchased it, it was 95% finished). It's (to our mind) not particularly attractive on the outside, but it is very spacious inside and didn't need renovation. That was key for us, as we moved here with very small kids and had just worked hard renovating parts our old house in the suburbs of Chicago. New construction is an anomoly in our neighborhood. The builder had torn down one house, split the lot, and built two houses on it, facing the other direction. So what we have is a big house on a small lot and a funny shaped (long and narrow) back yard. No one has big yards in our neighborhood, and the neighborhood has an "urban light" feel to it, with side walks and homes built close together. We actually like this--we like knowing our neighbors and being able to walk, ride bikes, etc. on the sidewalks. We walk our oldest to 1st grade, which is wonderful as well. I like decorating but feel I am a complete novice at it. I am one of those people who know what I like when I see it but can't always imagine it in my head. Strange for me, since I consider myself a fairly creative person. I guess this is a art unto itself. We have a lot of white walls that need painting rooms that need tweaking. I just keep telling myself that it's a process and there's no hurry. Here are my boys celebrating Hanukkah this year: Here's a family pic. Had to go back to last April to find one of the 4 of us! My state is officially in the red zone and I believe #4 in the nation of cases. But hey, "it is what it is." ;) Roarah, one of the many scary things with Covid is the kids could already have it and never show symptoms and then give it to the adults. Your school is doing the right thing by having the kids wear masks. And it's worse when the mother teaches and gets in the faces of kids and other adults who don't wear masks. As I said above, the grands are totally cool with everything and they actually find it all to be interesting stuff. They've learned quite a bit about germs and how they spread because of their wonderful step-mother being an RN. DGD now wants to be an RN. Last year it was a Vet. :) I forgot to address the family eating meals outside and someone above said that was excessive. Have you seen their front porch? It's like a long veranda which sits high up, has several seating areas and a large outdoor dining table and chairs which were put there before Covid. They love eating al fresco, it's a new adventure, a beautiful view, and a great time for conversation. DS is keen about any anxiety but both kids have that wonderful laid back personality. They've got the mask at DS's home down to an art. It really does make me proud. None of us know how our immune system will react to Covid. Perfectly healthy adults have been dying from it. DS still gets a high fever when he gets a cold or the flu. When he was little I'd have to take him to the ER a few times to help get his fever down. He and I both keep that in mind with Covid. This is sad, a local in the next town over, a very healthy 20 something guy, had moved to CA after graduating and recently died of Covid while living there. We just don't know what will happen so erring on the side of caution is the way to go. Update. All's well that ends well! She and I are back to our normal chatty selves and catching up from the past few weeks of silence, telling each other funny things that have happened to us and how the kids are. I'm happy! Okay, time for someone else to do a topic about their current drama so I can tell you if you were in the wrong. lol

I love that chair, Terrilynn, it looks comfortable and functional. There is plush carpet in the room so I will check it out for a swatch and version that does not roll. The pillow captures all of the main colors in the painting, how did you do that?? Checking this on my laptop there is no ability to thank the last several posters for responding--seems I can only do that on my ipad, how bizarrely this site functions (or doesn't) sometimes. I appreciate all the feedback and suggestions. I had been avoiding this room because it was so jumbled and unfinished. At least at this point it is together enough to leave the door open, which reminds me to come in and take care of the stuff I need to do. I've ordered a lighter blue textured duvet cover and hope to use that with the navy quilt folded at the foot of the bed. Hopefully the new blue will be in the right range. I haven't been able to find a print that's just right and may just table that. The curtains are bossy enough and I am finding solid colors very soothing these days. Even though we have been living here two years I haven't even started on the big room downstairs; it is still a repository for all the furniture I couldn't let go of and a few new, inexpensive things. Big surprise though, the gigantic leather sectional from IKEA has been used, abused, slept on, eaten on, and everything else-ed on and it is wearing like iron, so whatever I do it will stay. When unpacking my mother's stuff I came across a pencil drawing of my father and, incredibly, a colored pencil drawing of my mother! I'm having both framed and may need help finding a place for them :)

OH, I'm so in! I want to live at Blackberry Farm! I am seriously in love with this place. How blessed they are to be working there! Where will they live? Great news indeed!

That place looks so wonderful. I loved the section on foraging. Sounds like they've found a place they can learn for years to come.

Thank you all !! I am so happy to be able to share such good news with all of you in this time of economic upheaval. I have answered your questions below. They have indeed landed on their feet. This is the ONLY place they interviewed and they found it as the first opening when they started looking. It was equally amazing that they needed them both. Seems like one of those things that is meant to be. DS1 cooked all day for 2 days and the chef was quite pleased with his performance. DIL will be in management as she no longer does pastry etc. The property is part of a large organizations' rating system and the restaurant part is only one of about 75 in the world that is rated "Gourmand" by the rating system. You can get on the internet and see the other places that are rated. You will probably recognize many of them. I will link the system below. We are heading to New Orleans with them next week for a couple days to see family and then they will have Thanksgiving with us ( hopefully they will not have to leave) and then they will start by Dec.1.

In the midst of all of this DS2 quit his job in Atlanta and went on 1 job interview in LI New York and is moving Dec 1 also !! He will be living on Long Beach, a barrier island off of LI. Our DD is devastated that her dear brothers are all going to be moving ! So Mom and Dad now have 2 new destinations for vacations when DH retires !

dlm: thank you for the good wishes. It is out of OUR price range too LOL. The room rate includes 3 meals and snacks, but not wine etc. So how many snacks can you eat ?? :) The place is actually about 7000 acres according to DS1 he says they toured all the grounds with the butcher on wed, and that the place has added a lot of land to their holdings.

squirrel: they leave Tuesday to see about rentals. DS1 and DIL have found several places on Craigslist that are for rent. They want a cabin on a river w/ fireplace and there are several in their price range. Employees don't live on the grounds. There are homesites for sale at the property but they are for "ultra wealthy" clients.

golddust: actually they are getting ready to add another dining facility so they DO have openings. If you know someone who is a chef , it would be a very good opportunity !!

fly: you are right, this is an amazing opportunity. They can actually move to other Relais and Chateau properties in the future. Also they can be borrowed by other places so they have an infinite chance to see the world and learn from so many folks. When they have guest chefs there, Patricia Wells is there this weekend, they work directly with them to prepare every meal . So all in all it is going to be really special and growing experience.

mitch: we will indeed miss them but it is only 400 miles and DH is getting ready to retire in June so we will be frequent visitors to the area.

sue : you are right on. There is a discount !! When they have been there 6 months the dinner which is usually $125 a person is $25 so that is a whopping decrease. They can each have 3 guests so we are making plans LOL. Don't know about the rooms though....will have to wait and see.

Congratulations to them both . . . what a wonderful place Blackberry Farm seems to be! Gosh, I'd love to stay there! We've stayed twice at the one R&C property in New Mexico and were told just how hard it is to get and keep such a prestigious rating. It speaks volumes about how talented your son & DIL are.

What a terrific oppportunity!

Blackberry Farm has been in the press for years! Just glorious! Ooooooo -- just one night MIGHT be enough for me (but probably NOT! LOL!))

Lots of very famous people stay there too! So tell them to get autographs and photos (especially with their food at their table) Always handy for that future cookbook that they will write! :)

Thank you Lynn, they are really talented and hardworking and we are so glad that they are being given this opportunity. My son is a Marine Veteran and went to culinary school on the GI bill and loans. He has never made a lot of money being a chef but is so in love with what he does that it doesn't matter to either of them. They are a really worthy couple.

Yeh Jan I said I wanted pics and autographs and DS1 "rolled eyes". So I will have to take the opportunity when we get up there LOL...will need a VERY tiny camera ! Thank you so much for your good thoughts .

WOW tina that is a great coincidence. They are leaving early tomorrow and have appts all day with realtors and people that they called from Craigs List. They are looking in the Maryville area, along the Greenway and also in Townsend. I will definitely keep you posted. If you look on CL you will see several of the properties as there aren;t that many cabins. Thank you for the congrats !! c
