My oldest son, unfortunately, is in Afghanistan with the military for a year so we'll miss him, and his wife has to work that day. The rest of us are all traveling to my daughter's house in Athens, Georgia, (a 5 hour trip), to get together with her and her husband, 4 year grandson and 9 month old twins. My college age grandson will be with us, too, he's coming over from Clemson. So it will be a smaller gathering than usual, just 9 of us, but we're looking forward to it. My daughter's called every day for the last week, so I think SHE's looking forward to us being there, also.

My oldest son is driving 12 hours. I was worried about the weather, but no snow and in the 60s. Haven't seen him for a year and a half, he just retired from coming back from Kuwait. Nanny, may your son be safe and return home to your arms.

Thank you, emagineer and nancybee for your kind wishes. Having a child, even an adult child, so far from home is difficult, especially during the holidays. Emagineer, I hope your son's journey is a safe one, and that you have a joyous reunion. A year and a half is such a long time - you must be bursting with the anticipation! My son was in Kuwait just three years ago, and we hoped then that would be his last tour overseas, but now this. This, hopefully will be the last time, just 11 more months to go!

My son is on deployment to Afghanistan, again. Our third holiday season without him, *sigh

We're traveling to Columbus to celebrate and give thanks with my daughter and her sweet family.

We are in a cabin in the woods in the Shenandoah valley in VA. Kids are here and grandbaby. The kitchen is great and I have a huge island . I am lucky. Here is a pic of the kitchen. So far I have made roasted pumpkin/butternut squash soup with an applejuice reduction to flavor the yogurt for the topping and roasted the seeds. Also roasted beets with feta and pecans for the salad. We will have a spatchcocked roasted turkey and mashed potatoes...I cooked the giblets/neck the other day for the gravy. Brussels sprouts that have been separated into leaves and stir fried. I made buttermilk dinner rolls yesterday and for dessert a quince/apple crumble with brandied raisins and whipped cream. Not bad for being out of town and in the woods :)

natal you are sweet ! The b.s. ended up being roasted as DS1 didn't have time to separate the leaves. They were good and brown on the edges. Here is a link to quince. They have an interesting taste...citrus and pumpkin and tart and creamy...there are different kinds. I have all the juice left and am taking it back to AL and making jelly from it. WW I am NOT...DH did all the dishes...he rocks . Pics tomorrow. c
