returned?! Unbelievable.

I have to hope that this gets nationwide coverage and that the person who has this dog realizes what a crappy thing her mother has done and returns this pooch to his rightful owners/family.

Scooter's pregnant mommy is being very gracious about it, but I can only imagine their heartache, their boy is missing!

I think she's nicer than I am. I would not be consolable and in my grief, I think I would be very angry. This just burns me up.

I think I'd be trying to get DNA from the envelope and fingerprints and anything else that CSI could use to figure out who sent that letter, Stacy. I KNOW it's all TV stuff, but there must be some way to track the woman down. I'd also be calling every vet's office in a hundred mile radius and alert them to the facts of the missing/stolen (because I consider him stolen, now) dog.

Just think if Dances' Ruby or if Ang's pug was missing like that! Grrrrr!

"the only browns I ever have are leaves in the fall. My lot is only 33x90 feet including the house and a garage, so hoarding leaves all year is a bit out of the question." Instead of saving up leaves to compost with, just shred them and put them in your beds to serve as mulch and allow them to break down in place. (sheet composting) Some people shred them by making a pile and running over them with the lawnmower a couple of times. Other people put them in a large trash can and use a string trimmer to grind them up. We can all be jealous of the lucky folks who have a big dedicated chipper shredder. Anyway, take the shredded leaves and mulch your beds with them. If you like, you can mix the leaves into the top couple of inches of soil for a faster break down. (I have oaks and magnolias whose leaves break down incredibly slowly, so this helps in my case) Since you have heavy clay like me, you'll find that the earth worms just swarm in your beds to gobble up the shredded leaves, dragging that organic material deeper and really loosening up the soil and helping improve drainage. Adding used coffee grounds along with the leaves kicks that into turbo mode as earth worms absolutely love uncomposted coffee grounds. I divided some Japanese painted ferns this spring in an area where I always pile on the coffee grounds and the soil there was absolutely thick with worms. The more experience I have with sheet composting the more I think it's the way to go, especially for those of us trying to make a difference in heavy clay.

"Honeyberry" or sweetberry honeysuckle is extremely hardy. It's fully hardy here and, just as important, chinook-proof. Extremely early to leaf out, even earlier than alpine currant. It's also described in Sara William's Prairie Xeriscape with other honeysuckles as "tough, drought-tolerant" and "well-adapted to prairie conditions". Rick is growing various varieties of this - we just have a couple of the straight species (rather than named selections). "Russian sea grape" is a rather peculiar name for what's more commonly called sea buckthorn - hardy as all get-out. My mom grows them in zone 2, and the city (Calgary) uses them here and there. I love the look of the clustered golden or orange berries, but they are rather invasive (root suckers) so not suited to our city yard. (Got more than enough suckers already from lilacs, roses, various Prunus, 'Schubert' chokecherry, gooseberries, etc.........) Some old, basic hardy grape varieties for zone 3 are 'Valiant' and 'Beta', or the straight species, Vitus riparia - not great for eating (IMO) and not even very attractive to birds, but good for jelly. 'Fredonia' and 'F-130' are another couple of newer ones that are available up here. Grapes, even the toughest, are a little touchy here, possibly due to the chinook conditions, but can thrive in zone 2. (My mom, zone 2, has a huge old grape vine that's older than I am.) We have the U of S sour cherry introduction 'Carmine Jewel' - I'd recommend 'Evan's' instead for much larger, sweeter fruit and probably almost as hardy. Or, actually, Nanking Cherry for sweeter fruit than either, though much smaller and less flavorful than 'Evan's'. (All have been totally hardy here but that seems variable by area...with respect to 'Evan's' anyway.) Also have Mongolian cherry - sour as he!!, and very small fruit. (So, tell me again....why exactly is this thing taking up space where I could instead be growing perennials??? ;> ) 'Evan's' is beautiful in bloom (and produces very heavily, very quickly); all have nice fall color. I'm still waiting for local success stories on kiwi; tried a pair a few years ago that didn't even winter.

Supposedly, the effect of red plastic comes from the light that is reflect back ( Red wave length). If it were for the purpose of warming effect, black would be the best since it absorbs almost all wave lengths and reflects none. So what is magical about the RED (its corresponding wave length) that tomato benefits from ? The full spectrum sun/day light already has that wave length in it too. The 10% increase in production CLAIM is very difficult to prove and substantiate to be due to the reflection effect. The plant might have benefited from the soil warming effect. In which case black, grey, semi clear can have a better effect. The other issue is that when plants are planted , say, at 2 ft spacing, and they have already large top (foliage) very little light will reach the ground and still very little of it will be reflected having an incident angle to hit the plant. Call me an "skeptic" on this subject (red plastic).

Our home was originally an Indian allotment. If were to you dig around, you wouldn't find any arrowheads, but you might find a disc, or part of an old horse drawn rake or maybe even an old plow. (These Indians were farmers, not hunter/gatherers.) The better digging is in the old dumps; lots of swell bottles and old graniteware. Actually, the house had been built on another part of the 160 acres, but sometime in the late 20's, or at least by 1930 the porches were partially dismantled and the whole house was moved to it's present location closer to the road. There's a small building in one corner of the yard that became the Grandpa's tinkering shed. I learned that Indian homes "back in the day" almost always had a similar little structure built as a birthing house. I'm not sure if anyone was born in this one, because by the time the house was moved, the children were well past infancy, but then again, they moved the big house, why wouldn't they have moved the little house too? The surviving sister is over 75, and was too young to remember exactly when the house was moved. All but that one member of the original family is buried out back in the family cemetery, which sits in a clearing in the woods just east of what's left of the old stacked stone foundation. Most of the graves are marked, but there are three of those traditional grave houses that have fallen in that are not. My Grandson and I go (with permission) once a year to trim back limbs, cut down saplings and generally tidy it up a bit. I also know that S.J., the last original family member to have lived in the house, was a confirmed batchelor until he was 65, when he married a local widow. (Better late than never.) They lived together happily until he passed away in 2000, and she moved not far from here back to the house she shared with her first husband on his family's allotment. >At this point, the cheerful background music turns somber and the story develops a somber tone. As I've heard it, a local businessman had some kind of agreement/contract with S.J. to buy the place after he died. I'm guessing it was one of those pay now, take posession later deals that gives an elderly person who is "house poor" money to live on. In the end, it got ugly. The businessman and his wife took the widow to court because she'd been staying in town while her husband was ill. They argued that she had "abandoned" the place, and he was awarded posession. :^( Anyway, that man turned his hand to a little remuddling; removed the french doors, slapped vinyl siding on the house, gutted the bathroom and put in a plastic shower. Anything that was still in the house was hauled out and thrown in the dump; from the looks of it, what didn't break going in was burned. Everything in the yard was mowed down. The only bright side is that other than the bathroom and the french doors, he left the interior alone, and no one cut any of the mature trees in the yard. When he was finished, he "flipped" the place to a gentleman from California who only wanted it because at the time, it was still legal to fight gamecocks in this state, and he planned to raise chickens. Less than 3 years later, chicken fighting was voted out, and he put the place up for sale. That's when we bought it. >cue the happy theme song againWhen I found out that S.J.'s widow was still living, I went to visit, and invited her to come and see the house. She was in her 90's but she had her daughter bring her down and we had a wonderful visit. She was surprised to see two of the roses had survived so much mistreatment and neglect and got a little misty eyed when she talked about planting them all those years ago. That fall, we carefully dug them up transplanted them to her yard; she was just thrilled to have them back all these years later. Then she said "Oh, but now you don't have any roses". I laughed and told her I could plant all the roses I wanted, but that these belonged to her. I have to say that was the most fun I'd had in a long time. They're still blooming at her house, and here I am, 2 & 1/2 years later, blessed with roses everywhere you look...

That just totally amazes me still...I keep thinking wow if that was one of my dogs what I would do...hopefully the dad will see this and realize what has happened and return the dog......Dang if that was Eddie he would not even eat..I don't know that I could ever even leave him he seems so heartsick when I just go out for the day....Stacy

I was just thinking the same thing, Stacy. If all the newspapers, TV news programs, radio, etc make this really well known, maybe the Dad or a friend of the little girl, or even the girl herself will realize what's happening. This woman has a lot of nerve and paying $20 to ease her conscience is not going to do it. So much for turning her life around- she's sunken to dog-thief. The dog had ID! Bah.

Both are sad cases. But the second case I am not sure if the people deserve that dog back! They could have taken it to a vet for treatment and boarding.
Now the first case I'd be so upset! I hope the Dad recognises the pug and returns it somehow. Thats the only hope the little guy has to be reunited with his rightful owners.

I had a Miniature Schnauzer stolen from my Backyard in a Suburban Area. Only about 30 houses in the area and my house was on a Cul-da-sac. I contacted every Vet in the area and posted signs. I went house to house in the neighborhood. Never heard from the dog again. No one found him. I put an ad in the paper, also.

I only had the dog, Benjamin, for about 8 months, but we loved him. It was horrible just wondering what could have happened to him.

How about this story that was on the local news. He hid the dog in his jacket. Makes you wonder what goes on in the minds of these people. It even happened on Christmas Eve.

That happened in my DD's town too Clare. It was a Staffordshire Terrier (hope I got the breed right. It was from the humane society. This couple walked in and were interested in adopting her and wanted to walk it and see how she acted on a leash. They never came back with the dog!!! Course these people were extremely smart! They gave their name to the HS. Within a few days the dog was back.
It never surprises me anymore what people will do. Just when you think you've seen and heard it all some loser pulls a doozy!

I would be heartsick knowing that somebody had my dog and wouldn't return it.

My cousin lost her little black dog Skoda last year during a storm in St. Louis. Her apartment door flew open and out the dog went. Despite large cash rewards and city wide searches and even radio spots nobody returned the dog. They never found the dog's body either so somebody has the dog. I became really attatched to that little dog and I felt sick to my stomach when she went missing especially knowing how this little dog loved being around the family and had to sleep with someone.

Not the same thing but kind of.- I lost a ring in a department store dressing room and the minute I realized it was missing I ran back but it wasn't in the dressing room. I noticed in less than 10 minutes after leaving the store I didn't have my ring. The store clerks couldn't recall who had just be in the store trying on clothes but they said she wasn't a regular patron. I put an ad in the classified with a reward and a guy called me telling me his girlfriend found my ring but wanted to keep it. He even described it to me. I tried to get him to do the right thing and give me her name or try to get the ring back and he said he would try. He called the next day and said "sorry, no go" We didn't have call display then. My ring was given to me by my Mom when I was 16 and growing up she always wore it. The ring was especially made for her. My Mom had many offers over the years from people wanting to buy the ring and she always said no "it's priceless" I couldn't tell her I lost the ring but she knew. Every once in a while she would ask me how come I wasn't wearing the ring anymore knowing how much I loved wearing it. I finally confessed years later but I always felt so sick I lost that ring and somebody knew I lost it and wouldn't return it. I did file a police report and since that ring is one of a kind I am always on the lookout even 30 years later. I know my ring and would recognize it in a flash if I saw it on somebody's finger.

I know how bad I felt about a ring gone missing but I can't imagine how heartsick I would feel about my dog.

I would go to the police, contact every veterinarian in a 50 mile radius, call local news channels (Ernie Anastos, where are you?), contact every local elementary and middle school, and contact all local newspapers and radio stations. I would appeal to local family courts and justice systems, giving them as much information as possible about all parties (postmark of the letter, ex-husband remarried, city you suspect ex-husband lives in, general age range of child, particulars of the mother...she mentions she's educated and an alcoholic).
Damn! I hope that woman rots in he!!. What a worthless piece of crap she must be...I am so sick and tired of people like that taking up precious air. Does that tell you what I really think?

Anne, I had a similar thing happen to me. My Dad was laid off from his job in my high school senior year. I told my parents I wanted an opal ring for graduation. Lo and behold, they got me an opal ring with a big beautiful opal and two small diamond accents. I loved that ring, and especially when I thought of my parents, with four kids, finding the money to buy me that ring. I wore it on special occasions only. I kept it in a separate box inside my jewelry box in my bedroom. I got married, moved 500 miles away from my parents and had two daughters. The only person who had access to my jewelry box was a babysitter who took care of my kids for six years. We fired her when she stole some items from my kitchen, a shot glass and some cookie cutters. Not expensive, but I was creeped out at her stealing from me. Several months later I looked in my jewelry box and the ring (and its' box) were gone. I looked all over, asked my kids if they had played with my jewelry, but no. The only person who had ever been in my house was that baby sitter. I still see her in the neighborhood. I wish I had some evidence, but it's too late now. I've been looking on Ebay to see if I can find a similar ring, but I can't. I'm afraid to tell my Mom the ring is gone (Dad died 10 years ago).

What sad, sad stories. All of them. I'd be beside myself with grief and anger. No telling what I'd do. But, I would leave no stone unturned trying to get my dog back. Hopefully someone will read the article or hear it on the news and turn the people in or alert them. Poor pooches!

That woman is really sick. I would tell my story to someone at a Tulsa (isn't that where the lady was from who took the dog?)newspaper and contact vet offices, etc so that my story would be everywhere!

Well, that woman is an ass! Makes me want to spike her punch. If someone took my dog I would have zero mercy. The lady who had her dog stolen is very compassionate to offer to buy the child a replacement and not press charges. People are ridiculous these days!

I hope so, Moni! I suspect it will because more notoriety could be the thing that gets this dog back to his proper home, where he belongs.

I heard about it yesterday when we were listening to a Tulsa radio station. I bet they're hearing it in Dallas, too.

It just makes me so mad that someone would KEEP a missing dog for her own selfish reasons. How DARE she? I bet her XH will be mortified once he finds out, and her daughter isn't going to appreciate all the media attention over this, either. The mother should fess up NOW and salvage any semblance of selflessness that she might have left. If she waits to be busted, the public won't look kindly upon her.

I am not a big pet person.. but I sure think the is looney. Since the dog had a tag on it, which enabled her to send a letter, one knows she could have returned the dog!

I hope they get their dog back!

Amazing, like pets are interchangeable!

It almost seems we've entered an era of anything goes, do what you need to get what you want. Unrelated, there's a story in our paper about a mom in Texas, she was helping her 6 year old daughter write an essay and falsely claimed that the girl's dad died in Iraq in order to win Hannah Montana tickets. Sheesh! Plus, what has she taught her girl? Yikes.

A few years ago my DH had a small beagle.. He had it out traing it to hunt.on our own property. It disappeard. A week or so later my husband was in town walking down the street when this small dog camed to him. Naturally DH knew the dog. A little boy came out of a house and started calling the dog but it wouldn't go to him.
