Prep Sinks - Size and Shape

Other than looks, is there an advantage to round or square island prep sinks? I am thinking round, Mister says square more functional. What is the perfect size? It will be placed at the end of the island by the cooking wall.

For the prep kitchen (primary use is baking, pasta making, entertaining or catering, what is the best size? I originally had 33" but think that is too big for the space.

BTW, this is the first version of the plan and we have already noted multiple changes. Feel free to comment away.

I had an 18" round in my last home and I wouldn't want to go any smaller. My new kitchen will have an 18" square copper sink and I think it will be perfect for the kind of prep I do (washing fruits, veggies & hands). I'd have put in a larger sink if I'd had more room but 18" will work.

I think your H is right - square sinks have more prep room. Practically speaking, if you need to replace a grid - its easier to walk into a kitchen store and get a square or rectangle one. Colanders are designed for the square sinks as well - so check out your accessories. Also, consider if you have to replace a sink - rectangle is standard. Round may be harder to replace in 15 years. I say this because I put in a cute hexagonal shaped sink in my prep area many years ago and its 22X22. I want to replace it and cannot find a sink to fit. As you are doing an entire, beautiful home, you need to think not only of now - but the future.

I was restricted by space and I have had the Blanco rondo prep sink for several years. It is big enough for prep and pasta draining. Doesn't work so well for washing medium sized pots but that's OK. I have no regrets.

It looks like you've gotten lots of good advice on size already, but I'll throw mine in too 13-3/4 X 15-3/4. It works very well for me. If you are going to do a LOT of washing of very large items, I might go bigger, but for standard prep stuff, that's served me well. Two other thought's I'll add about prep sinks since you're in the planning stage. 1)Be careful about the depth (front to back) of sink you choose, if you are installing it on a standard depth counter (i.e. not an island, where depth would not be as big of an issue). I actually had a deeper one originally, but since mine is on a standard depth counter, there was not room for the faucet with the deeper sink - OOPS! - and I had to return it for a smaller one. 2) One thing I wasn't sure about doing but am now REALLY glad I did, was to put a garbage disposal in BOTH my prep as well as my main sink. Prep junk (veggie peels, etc) goes down prep disposal, and clean-up junk (plate scrapings, etc) goes down main disposal. Hope that helps.

Gharborwa, The sizes you chose are almost identical to ours. We're getting a Julien main sink with a 28" bowl size. The 28" will accommodate our largest pans and the various pieces of our unsealed range top. A larger sink would rob me of too much counter space. Our prep sink, which is really a bar sink, is a 13" diameter round sink. The prep sink is really our espresso area sink--just for clean up and to allow two separate work areas, oh, and we will have our filer tap for drinking water at that sink too. It is hard to make those final decisions.

What I like best about mine is having one. Period. But I also like that it is large enough to fit a large pot or colander when needed, small enough to give me plenty of space in my island counter and my cabinet underneath. Mine is about 15x15 or 16x16 and seems a good size for me. I would go a little bigger, but not smaller --especially if you are putting and instant hot at the prep sink. Mine has a corner faucet (with pulldown sprayer -- don't forget spraying for rinsing veggies, etc.) with soap dispenser att he opposite corner. An instant hot there too would be a bit cramped, especially if you also have an air switch there.

I believe square/rectangle is more spacious than round. Plus, I just prefer clean, straight lines anyway.

How wide is your island on that end where you're placing the sink? In a kitchen your size, I would go as big as possible. 21-24" would be amazing. But, you don't seem to have enough room for that where you've got it placed and still have much counterspace for work. I'm sure you've thrown out this idea already, but what about moving the sink around to the long end of the island?

My prep sink interior is about 15-16" wide, and I sometimes wish it was a bit bigger. I was set on Blanco's silgranit, and their sizes are limited. I would have larger if one slightly larger was available.

Our prep sink is a rectagular zero radius inner dimension 18" X 13". Ours will function as a secondary sink for 2nd dishwasher as well as prep and entertaining.
A neighbor has a circular 18" diameter and she likes it for pasta draining and quick cleanup.

Avidchef makes some good points and I think rectangular/square would be a better choice.

We have decided on rectangular sinks for all locations. Probably all Ticor as well.
