Sizes for main sink and prep sink

I am making a lot of choices right now and my head is spinning. Today I picked out plumbing, and chose a Franke single stainless sink for my main sink, I think it is about 28" wide and a 16" round prep sink. the prep sink will be on an island 12' x 3' I can go just about any sizes...opinions on my choices? thanks!

Those sound pretty good-- like good, functional sizes.

If you have cast iron cookware or other things you might want to rinse right at the island, you could consider a larger prep sink. Malhgold did that with a single the size of her cleanup sink for prep, and Zelmar actually has a larger sink in her cooking work area than in her cleanup zone for that reason. If I ever do another kitchen, I think I'll put the same sized sink in both places.

Thanks, rhome... I always look forward to your input. I chose these kind of fast yesterday, then came home and started thinking more about it...wondering if I could fit certain pots in the prep sink and if it would be large enough for big jobs. I've never had a prep sink, so I don't know exactly how I'd use it. I've also never had a single big sink, have always had a double sink, which was pretty good sized. So any input is very welcome.
I'll look into a bigger prep sink. Thanks again.

Either same faucet different finishes (I'd never have answered that was if I'd not have seen the lovely kitchen above) or same finish, no need to match. What would look bad would be two different finishes and styles in the same kitchen. My faucets (I have three) are all different, all within six feet of each other...and the only thing they have in common is the same finish. They look great and each functions as it should for the area it serves.

Mine are both stainless, but my main sink is KWC and the prep sink is Blanco. I considered a white farmhouse sink, and the prep sink still would have been stainless. I sure wouldn't feel obligated to match brands, but you might find that different brands will have a slightly different finish (the degree of brushed or shiny, polished finish). Most are brushed to some degree -- a few are more polished and mirror-like. If they are both under-mounted, most folks would never notice unless they are very different -- and then they probably still wouldn't care. But if you are the one in the group who could see nothing else --- well, you probably wouldn't be asking.

water filter faucet at main sink or prep sink?

We have the water filter at the main sink. Not only is it closer to the glasses; it's closer to the espresso machine and tea things and to the baking center. That's convenient for making bread dough. We also find other advantages to having it at the main sink. Ours is instant hot water as well as cool. When cleaning just a pot or two, it is convenient to add some hot water from it to the tap water to get warm water for washing instead of waiting for the hot tap water to arrive (and it saves water). Someone who needs water doesn't have to disturb someone using the prep sink. For example, getting rice started while someone else preps for a stir fry.

acauley, you've now spent some time thinking this through (BTW, I used to have poor well water - a lot of iron so I understand why you have a filter!), and it seems like you've come up with the best solution. I don't consider a dedicated tap as 'bling' if this is something you use daily and need (such as yourself) and I would definitely want hot and cold at the prep (I too thought only cold at the prep until I gave it thought). I see no problems with putting them at 10 and 2. I think I'd rather have the faucet at 12 to go directly in the drain with the tap offset in a square sink, but then again, this might restrict the swivel of some faucet necks, particularly in a round sink. So 10 and 2 are probably best in your solution. Also, have you considered putting in a disposal at your prep? Even if you compost, they are pretty indispensable for veggie prep. Actually, I have a 24" main sink and a 30" prep sink. This has worked out amazingly well for me. I only use the clean up sink for dirty dishes and cutlery and the prep sink for prepping and cleaning of pots and pans(I don't put mine in the DW). My DW is to the right of the clean up sink(next to the shelving). Here's a pic so you can see the orientation of my prep and clean up sinks.

In my opinion, if you have the space, a 36" single bowl sink is the best choice. Try to find one with a right rear drain, so you can place pots and pans in the sink without covering the drain.

What do you all think about the Franke Orca? As of now, I have chosen just a basic Franke single sink. Would the Orca give me more options, or are the options more gimmicky than useable? It sounds like the prep sink maybe should be a little bigger?

I agree with Dino (Rachiele), but we will get a smaller copper apron front sink from him later this spring because our kitchen isn't large. Hi there, Mr. Rachiele - I can't wait to order my sink! It will be a fire and ice patina for me... So beautiful.

The sizes you chose are almost identical to ours. We're getting a Julien main sink with a 28" bowl size. The 28" will accommodate our largest pans and the various pieces of our unsealed range top. A larger sink would rob me of too much counter space. Our prep sink, which is really a bar sink, is a 13" diameter round sink. The prep sink is really our espresso area sink--just for clean up and to allow two separate work areas, oh, and we will have our filer tap for drinking water at that sink too.
It is hard to make those final decisions.

Thanks, Sandn, Since I will be using my prep sink as a real prep sink, I'm worried about the size..and I've never had a single sink as my main sink, so I have no idea what I will need there. Too many variables, especially when I haven't actually used the things I am deciding on.
