Is this a reasonable cost for a second system?

A friend is adding a second system to a house she just bought. This unit will be for the second floor only and have to be put on her roof, as it's a row house style in DC. The second floor is about 700sft and generally gutted for other remodeling so routing the ductwork shouldn't be as big of a hassle. The price for all this is $15,500.

I will assume your friend is being quoted the correct size.

I find the pricing absurd for a two ton system even for a roof install and new ductwork.

I strongly encourage getting another quoted preferably from a Trane or AmStd dealer.

numbers are good on this Carrier system. I do prefer a system though that has electronic demand defrost. This one doesn't.

I would insist on Carrier's Edge thermostat over the Honeywell model. It has dehumidify on demand feature.

I just paid 750.00 including shipping from Home and Stone for a Hansgrohe system for my kids bath. It included an ECO stationary showerhead, Eco handheld on an adjustable bar, hose, wall receptacle, thermostatic III control plus rough in (275.00), tub spout as well as a faucet and soap dispenser for the sink. I called Hansgrohe before ordering to make sure I had all the right pieces an proper part numbers. Hansgrohe has sets already assembled if they fit your need. I went for the individual pieces to get exactly what I wanted.

You might have a "Cost of the Work with a % Fee" contract with a Guaranteed Maximum Price (not to exceed amount). In such a contract the builder would offer you alternative prices for each major work category and if you chose a price higher than the lowest one, the GMP would be increased by the additional cost. When the GC thinks any part of the work exceeds the original scope, he must submit a Change Order for your approval before the work is started. I can't tell if the additional work for the well is a legitimate scope increase or not; it would depend on the design documents listed in the contract and any clause about additional costs for subsurface conditions, etc. I don't know how a bank would view legitimate Change Orders but either they or you should have a contingency fund for work that was not able to be included in the contract.

See above on models #'s for air handler / stat: will include below: What size zone in living area? Guessing 1500 in the area this one zone will cover. All companies were in agreement with a 2 ton system. For a 2 ton, that is some very frisky pricing.: These quotes were almost $1100 below another HVAC company. Do you think this is high? Can you give the model number of the air handler quoted? Trane 7 series (TAM7AOA24H21SB) What does the quote include and complete scope of work involved? New ductwork? Air filter cabinet? What Mdl thermostat quoted? All work included, Trane 802 stat quoted. Will look into american standard. But just quotes from two companies on trane products so far. Thanks

Just realized while scanning through other posts that pricing is probably a no-no. Also noticed that a lot of people are getting quotes on SEER 16. From what I have seen and researched via some energy websites is that you recoup the cost of SEER 13 in about 10~13 years, SEER 14 in 15~20, SEER 15 and above in 25+. Since technology in this area essentially makes the baseline units (SEER 13 and below)obsolete in about 15 years, does it really make sense to purchase a unit that you will never recoup the costs from during its life since it will likely become obsolete and more energy efficient to upgrade? Some people will argue that it does make sense because of environmental reasons at this moment, but for most people the reason to buy more energy efficient units is so their utility bill will stay low or be low and the side effect is environmental. It just makes no sense to buy the high level SEER units unless you know for a fact you will stay in the home for 25+ and/or don't mind dropping the extra cash and buying a more efficient unit in 15 years to be a good environmental citizen. Anyway, am I wrong here? If I could get a higher SEER rating and not drop $3K extra just to jump to 15 I would do it, but just dont see that I will be able to recoup the costs.

Prices can vary between markets/regions and usually is dictated by competitive forces at work. I would think the DC area is very competitive.

You are going to pay an up charge for a roof install, that's for certain. However, still believe the pricing you have been given is way over the top unless there are specifics/extras that you have failed to mention.

The only way you will know is by seeking a competitive quote from another dealer on same or similar HVAC.

as an idea, I had a 2.5t SEER14 Trane installed (new electric, new lineset) for about half that price in NoVA.
