A clink to the Moms on the Cooking Forum

I'm not sure how much time I will have to share with you all tomorrow, so I wanted to take a moment this evening to *clink* to all the moms on the forum. A couple people might recognize the glass from Martini Mayhem, I only bring it out on the most special of occassions!

So here is to all the Mothers out there!

Meems is a sweet girl and if she doesn't like to cook I don't think she has to learn a whole lot of cooking techniques that fit someone else's lifestyle. I think that's what AnnT is getting at. Everyone needs to find their own system of what works for them. My brother and BF are "plain food" people. They eat like LindaC suggests, a good cut of meat, a cooked vegetable, a quick salad and some kind of starch, all in their neatly arranged individual corners on the plate, lol! Me on the other hand, I like stir fry, a jumble of pasta, a melange of soup. That's why I can't really give quickie advice here, my quickie stuff is mostly some version of rice and beans, something most folks don't eat for dinner as the sole dish. My system is to cook some larger, more complicated dishes on the weekends and freeze them. And I love leftovers. Someone else's system might be to throw something fresh together every night. There are lots of quick and dirty ways to get a fast meal on the table. I am learning more and more of them everyday as I venture into the wonderful world of "cooking for two." Sooner or later you'll get a repertoire together that suits your new lifestyle realities. Seems like that's what you're asking for here, not a treatise on how to get along with your adult children. There are certain dishes I just won't do, not because I can't do them or they are particularly difficult, but because I just do not want to fuss with the process of making them. Pie is one example. I love pie, so I make it, but I rarely do the crust from scratch, I don't care how easy someone tells me it is or how much they enjoy homeade pie crust. I buy boxed pie crust, haven't found it to be all that much worse than my own homeade, and a whole lot less trouble. It is a compromise I'm willing to make. This week I'm making a quiche with one, which then makes quiche one of those easy, delicious, semi homeade meals. Add a salad, some good rolls and you're good to go. The pre-shredded gruyere at the market was actually way cheaper than the whole cheese, what a boon!! Sometimes it's not just the process of cooking that makes getting a meal on the table a no-fun endeavor. My kitchen set up is so awkward it has greatly reduced what I'm in the mood to cook. No matter how I've reconfigured it, it is still a pain. I love to cook with a good music or other NPR show on the radio as accompaniment. Maybe that is one part of motivating yourself to cook dinner--make the kitchen environment seem fun and welcoming to you when you come home tired from work. Unfortunately, mine is not, which explains a lot of why I don't like to cook. The other thing for me is cooking with someone else. I am WAY more motivated to cook something if someone else is helping. I am an extrovert who loves to be with friends, I love to cook with others so when BF helps me in the kitchen I am way more motivated to make things. Being a craftsman by profession, he loves the process of dicing and slicing, which I hate. So I would suggest that is part of the equation. Take a look at your kitchen and see if there are ways to arrange things that make cooking faster, easier and more enjoyable. I rotate my crockpot and my bread machine, one or the other is going on my counter almost every day. The joy of those appliances is not that they do such a spectacular job of cooking food, but that they fill up the house with wonderful, homey, mouth watering aromas, which makes you feel good about both cooking and eating. That's part of the process. A bowl of fresh fruit and nuts or a tray of muffins in a see through glass container on the counter, etc. I once lived in a big old farmhouse and the kitchen was loaded with counter space and was by far the biggest room in the house. I lived with some great roomates, we cooked together and hung out most of the time at the kitchen table. I cooked WAY more in that set up than I do now. I can't believe the baking and cooking I did back then, having no more time than I do now. Anyway Susie, I know I tend to be the alpha wolf in a lot of situations and sometimes what I need to do is ask for help, tell others I need help. Sure, you can cook everything all by yourself, but if you tell the kids you would really appreciate some help, they will find ways I'm sure!! Somtimes all you have to do is ask, because what one person automatically knows to do isn't the same for every other person.

Although it seems like a forgiving dough - I can taste that I cheated on the overnight ferment. Sorry your casserole dishes aren't big enough. I bake in a toaster oven so when my bread rises it burns on top. Another reason P a L'A is good - it spreads out more than up. I brush the bread with some slightly salty water right before it goes in the oven. But I lose that lovely floury rustic surface. Do you have a pizza stone? That helped me get a better crust back when I last had an oven - now I use it in my grill to make pitas. Also I read somewhere or another about using a SS restaurant dish lid as a cloche though I've never seen one large enough. I am currently jealously watching a neighbor build a stone wood-fired bread oven by his pond - the ultimate bread oven. He says he will advise me when I am ready to build one - and I definitely do not lack for rocks. However right now my 'yard' is festooned with logs, brush and firewood piles. Hopefully in the near future the logs will become a woodshed and I can move the firewood inside. Then maybe a bread oven - which will entail moving rocks. I'm tired just thinking about it all. Making some tea and toast and taking a nap.

seems as if there is lots here to clink to tonight! of COURSE i've already raised a toast to annie and elery--and i'll look forward to seeing pictures of the happy couple tomorrow--cheers! bubbe has her arthur home and we all know how tough trips to the hospital can be--especially on the spouse. it's great to know that things are as they should be again! but i want to clink again; this time for susie. with extra best wishes that your family continues to gain strength and improve every day. i'm very, very happy to know your little girl with be returning soon as i'm sure that will be an extra special treat for you! and here's hoping that everyone else has something particularly wonderful to enjoy this weekend--clink!

Oh My Poor Little Weedie! I'm not a Mom but I'm a Grandmom (now that's pretty tricky to accomplish) so I'll just send the entire CF over to take care of you. I never learned to do the poor baby thing very well but I do know how to delegate. Quite frankly, when I saw Jessy's note I am just so freaking happy to find out that its not any kind of doggie news that well, I'll just have to clink to your toe tonight with a nice cold alchoholic drink and wish that you had Nico or Annie's Raoul to serve you one of those funny blue drinks that you're so fond of - I think it was blue, anyway I do remember that it was something new and different. My own mother is a mess and an occasional monster, yet here I am anyway. A toast to all the better mothers than mine and a special toast to those who survived their own mothers to become truly wonderful mothers.

Here's a clink to everyone who has a Mom and everyone who is a Mom, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and Great Great Grandmother! No one told us what a hard job motherhood would be or a what a wonderful job it would be.

We have so many awesome mothers/stepmothers/grandmothers/great-grandmothers and "other mothers" here and it is only right to raise a glass in honor of all of us/them.

It's one helluva job, but worth every minute!

And to all who are missing their Mom. My second Mom (MIL) died this morning, so we are focusing on a great Mother's Reunion in the great beyond. Let's raise a glass to all the Mom's who are not with us.

What seemed at first to be a light hearted "clink" post has suddenly become serious...
I would like to offer a toast to those "moms" who have never given birth but who mother....and those who support and nurture such moms...
I had occasion to be with a family who's daughter had a 17 year old friend....who was there with us....who was 10 weeks pregnant, didn't know who the father was, for sure, parents had booted her out, the friend's mother said she had to find somewhere else to be....but next year this time she will be a mother...
Let's clink to those who beyond all odds, somehow manage to love and nurture a child...their biological child, or one who needs nurturing.
Who'll join me? Clink! to all the mothers for whom being a mother is a great hardship....but still manage....

Happy Mother's day to all. Wishing you all a bright and sunny day with family and friends.

We're going to our son and Dil's for a big family barbecue. It will be fun I know, and it will be good for Max to be with a lot of family since this is the first Mother's Day that we'll be without his Mom.

Happy Mothers Day from me as I sip my tea. Meredith is finally home so today is a special Mom's Day for me!

Today we move her to London. She will be living there for the next year while she attends grad school. It's only 1 1/2 hours away so she'll be home most weekends. I think it's a good transition for both of us! LOL

LindaC I cannot fathom in this day and age throwing out a 17 YO girl. Hope these people aren't 'friends'.

Clinks and hugs to everyone. I'll see my mom today, and most of my kids and gkids, and I'll cherish them, but I know it's not always sweetness and light for everyone.

I love my mama. This is my 5th Mother's Day without her here on earth. I do know she is having a great time with her mama and dad, brothers and special friends.

For those of you who have your mom's here....treasure them and spoil them rotten! And for those of you who are also mothers I hope your kids give you lots of love and special attention today!

I toast to all mentioned above. Lots of good toasts!

And a toast to my own mother who passed away just over 10 years ago. She was a wonderful mother and when I became an adult, a friend. I've patterned my parenting after hers and my father's and hope that I've done half as good a job as they did.

And, I'll also toast to my kids who have blossomed into incredible young adults. Not only are they constantly making me proud, but they still love me, respect me, ask my advice, and follow it. I just don't think I could ask for better than that!

beachlily, I'm sorry.

I tend to forget that I'm a mother on this day & instead focus on my own Mamma that I lost just shy of 40 years ago. I'm wondering how we would have related as adult woman to adult woman, how it would have been to call her with a question when I became a mother, & how special it would be to have a mother to call or take to dinner today...Mother's Day. Why do I still cry on Mother's Day? Geesh, she's been gone for 40 years!

Triciae, it's because a Mom is a Mom, is a Mom - no one else in the world like her - at least not to me. This whole thread made me cry and I still have my Mom - Thank heavens for her!

Jane, I'm so sorry to hear that you've lost your "2nd Mom", you and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Beachlily, I'm sorry about your Mom too.

I just sent my own Mother home with a bottle of her favorite Paul Newman wine, a loaf of homemade bread, a dozen farm fresh eggs and the last piece of rhubarb pie. Her goodbye to me was the same as always "Drive carefully, wear your seatbelt".

Mother is consistent, LOL.
