San Antonio Get Together

We had a great get together in San Antonio. Clive and Sharon of course drove the most miles, but Sally (Sally2) and her DH, Jerry, drove in from Garland and May, her DH (Len) and her 2 good-looking guys came in from Houston. My DH (Jim), daughter and Aleksi joined us also for lunch at Rosario's downtown. I was glad we didn't do the Riverwalk for lunch as it poured rain for a while, but cleared up before we left. You can see some of the reminants of the rain on Clive's T-Bird as he and Sharon were taking off. May and her family returned to Houston Sunday.

Clive and Sharon and Sally and Jerry went to the Riverwalk that night and met up for drinks and got some great pics of the Alamo at night.

Clive, Sharon, Jerry, Sally, Jim and I met at Mi Tierra for breakfast today. Clive, Jim and I can give you some advice about ordering breakfast tacos! Then Clive and Sharon took off East towards Karen's. Sally, Jerry, Jim and I walked thru Market Square as I was running out of my vanilla. Jerry and Sally were going to take the backroads to Dallas.

We greatly enjoyed meeting/seeing everyone. Another cooking forum get together goes down in the books.

Okay, I can't figure out the pics again, but Clive, Jerry and May all have some to post and I'll keep trying, but wanted to get this up.

I didn't see any photos from that link, but perhaps that's because I'm not a photobucket member.

My father was thrilled about the rain in Texas, and while it may have been a damper on Sharon and Clive, it was a godsend for my parents. I can't believe that people drove all the way from Garland for this get-together!! That's amost 300 miles! But then maybe they needed a San Antonio vacation. I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures.

I am a plumeria grower and I live in Alice. I purchased 1 each of several colors a number of years ago and then did a swap for 2 unknowns; I've been hooked ever since. When I was on Kauai a few years ago I collected quite a few sticks from around the island and brought them home with me. I've also gotten quite a few cuttings from a lady on O'Ahu who has a Yahoo group. She collects cuttings from around the island then sends them to group members who pay the S&H costs. I also got several plants from Tally today at the SA plant swap. I have none that are named varieties, or at least I don't know that I do. I'm not really worried about names as much as I am about beauty and variety. At present I have 16 semi-grown plumies (4-6' tall), the 3 plants I got today and 5 large rooted cuttings. Not a huge collection, but I'm just getting started. ;-)

Hello Flutterby ! I hope you love gardening as much as the rest of us do ! GardenWeb is a great research tool for you, as there is lots to learn, and plenty of valuable people here who can point you in the right direction. Depending on what part of town you're in, your soil could be different than others. North usually has a lot of rock, while other areas are great blackland. Either way, a raised bed is definitely the way to go. Personally, I don't think that I would grow herbs in pots (unless they are large) because our hot summers just seem to dry out the pots too quickly. That being said, I don't grow herbs, so I really can't say that firsthand. I do grow hundreds in pots though, and water constantly during the hot months. What grows well here ? Well, I'm terribly fond of salvias, and natives. I venture to say that many here will agree with the native side of that. A good way to determine what will do well in your area is a drive around the neighborhood to see what plants are doing nicely in yards and public areas. Starter plants -- one of my favorite nurseries is Rainbow Gardens. There are two locations in SA. Pretty soon (maybe March) they will start running a weekly ad in the Express News with great plants at great prices, and usually a freebie when you make a purchase. They have an awesome choice of herbs, as well. I also like the Antique Rose Emporium. Many of us also drop by Lowes clearance racks now and then for some really good deals ! Some stores are better than others. I prefer plants rather than seeds, just to get a headstart on things. But I don't usually buy large plants, because of the cost. Stick with 4" or 1-gallon and they'll get to that larger size soon enough at a fraction of the cost. Something else you may want to consider is attending our plant swaps. You may find the San Antonio swap post on the first page of GardenWeb, or it may have gotten to the second page by now. Or look for it also listed on the Texas Exchange sub-forum. The spring swap is March 10. You will learn a lot by attending the swaps and no doubt will go home with some plants. I also attend the Buda swap, which is April 17. I've been going to these swaps since the first one for Central Texas was started over 12 years ago. They are awesome ! You go home with all kinds of plants you couldn't find in a local nursery, and you make the best friends ! Please feel free to contact me directly by email if you want more information. 1st Veggie Garden (San Antonio) - Some Questions

Welcome! A lot of good questions here. My number one best piece of advice for you is take a trip up to Austin and go visit the Natural Gardener nursery. Ask to talk to John Dromgoole (the owner), and just tell him that you are starting your first veggie garden and would love to hear any tips he might have. He is an amazing wealth of info, and he's a super nice guy. The nursery is worth an entire day trip, as there is a ton to see with multiple gardens. They even have a veggie display garden that you can learn a lot from. 1. Earthworms are always a good sign. I have one lasagna bed that I started in the fall/winter of 2012. In Spring of 2013, I topped it with about 4" of finished compost and planted it with peppers, zucchini, and beans, and everything grew pretty well. I think my results this year will be better though. It does take a little while to break down, and I think some of the nitrogen was tied up by the decomp process. your length of time to good results could vary, and it will greatly depend on the depth of the bed. If you can build up at least 9-12 inches with your layers, you should get results quickly. 2. Grubs are bad. Whenever I find them, I toss them onto the concrete for the birds to find. If you have the means, buy some beneficial nematodes to get the grubs under control. 3a) It's still pretty early in the season, at least it is up here in Dallas. I have not started my squash yet, and I ALWAYS start squash from seed. If your plant was root bound in the container, it could be suffering from transplant shock. The problem could also be from the weather, over watering, nutrient deficiency... lots of possibilities. A picture would help. Next time, try seed. Most of mine sprout in less than a week (some in 24-48 hours) and grow very quickly. Also, be on the lookout for the dreaded squash vine borer. They are not fun to deal with. Because of SVB, I almost exclusively plant Tatume squash now, which holds up better than most others. 3b) again, pictures will help. Are you noticing any bugs on your plants? Even little itty bitty tiny ones on the under sides of the leaves? Aphids can do a lot of damage... 3c) Pictures! It really does sound like you have a watering issue though... how often are you watering? 4) I use cages. Depending on which varieties you are growing, tomatoes get BIG and HEAVY. Mine tower over my 6 foot privacy fence by the end of the season. If your support system isn't strong enough and a bad storm or heavy wind comes through, your plants are gonners. those standard wimpy cages at most of the garden centers are typically good for peppers and eggplant, but not tomatoes. Do a youtube search for galvanized fence tomato cage. In the garden, you will quickly get over the creepy crawlies. It's a part of gardening life. Just wait till you encounter your first tomato hornworm. :) You will also need to quickly figure out how to differentiate between good bug and bad bug. Baby ladybugs look really scary, but you should NEVER EVER EVER kill them. They are your best defense against aphids. Baby lacewings also look really creepy, but they eat all those nasty whiteflies. 5. I'm not a peat moss fan. I know a lot of people use it, but there are some issues that you should be aware of. Peat is not a renewable resource, and once it dries out, it is difficult to re-wet, so it doesn't really maintain the moisture levels in our Texas summers. Better options (IMO) are coconut coir and expanded shale. However, I have gotten to a point where I don't use either in my beds. I now just use compost, decomposed granite, lava sand, green sand, dry molasses, and zeolite. Find a local dirt source that sells compost in bulk, and you will save a ton. I use Soil Building Systems in Dallas. There is a good raised bed mix on the dirtdoctor website. The only miracle grow product I ever use is their organic potting soil, and even that is a rare occasion. 6) Herbs do great here. Dill, fennel, parsley, and cilantro are cool season herbs that die back during the summer, but if you let them go to seed, they will come back. I think chamomile falls in this category as well. Basil is a summer herb that loves the heat, and it will die once the fall temps are regularly at or below 40. It is easy to root though, so just take a cutting in early fall to overwinter. Oregano, sage, thyme, marjoram, rosemary, and germander are all evergreen for me in Dallas, and they all do fine in full sun. Mint is one of those things that you have to be 100% sure that you want before you plant it. It will invade every bit of soil that it can, and it's very difficult to get rid of. It's best planted in pots, and not in your veggie beds. If the herbs have been in pots indoors, be sure to harden them off by slowly acclimating them to the outside temps and sun exposure. The best resources I can think of will be John Dromgoole (Natural Gardener), Howard Garrett (DirtDoctor), and you local county extension office and/or master gardener association. You can grow a ton of stuff in Texas. Just don't try to grow lettuce in the summer or tomatoes in the winter. Oh, and don't forget to plant stuff for the bees!!!! Take a look at the seed exchange forum too. You will frequently see posts by people looking to get rid of older seeds. You just have to send them postage. Last thing - be sure to remove any grass from the area BEFORE you fill your beds. If there is any Bermuda grass in the area, it will grow up through your beds and eventually take over.

Okie doke...As it turns out those banana plants werent exactly as rooted as I thought they were and when I cut them from mama banana...well they wont be at the swap..sorry bout that guys. But I got some new things to add...this is the revised list: Gerbera daisies(orange, red, pink, yellow, and unknown) patty and donna Dragonfruit cuttings-patty and donna Selenicereus antonyanus(aka ric rac cactus) cuttings-donna,plant-patty Aporophyllum flagelliformis cuttings-rattail cactus White rain lily bulbs desert willow seeds trichocereus pups-donna trichocereus-patty worm castings worms zexmenia transplants Moy Grande hibiscus seeds(Im not sure if grow true to type...anyone wanna experiment?) It was a great get together, and was my first. I loved getting to meet Brenda, May, and Sharon, as well as their beautiful families. Thank you, Brenda, for organizing this get together. Jerry, my DH, took lots of pictures with his new camera, which he's still trying to learn about, but hopefully he'll get them downloaded this morning, and I'll be able to post pics tonight. We didn't get home until midnight last night, as we really took our time going home.

Sharon and Clive are such charming people, and easy to visit with. It was so much fun to hear the stories about their adventures on their trip across the U.S.. Brenda is a sweetheart and so thoughtful. She brought us all a bagful of goodies, with herbs and spices, a bottle of Cajeta Quemada Milk Caramel Spread, and a bottle of SaLimon Powder, a lemon powder for use on fruits and veggies, or whatever our imaginations tell us to use it on. I can't wait to try them. I'm especially eager to try the Milk Caramel Spread. Our visit with May was way too short, but she is such so nice, and her family is beautiful.

The River Walk was beautiful, lively, noisy and fun. Breakfast at Mi Tierra's was again, lots of fun, but as Brenda said, you have to be very specific about what you order. Hunting through the Mercado with Brenda for her Vanilla was fun, too, although my eye kept getting caught by the beautiful Mexican dresses. Sadly, they were a bit too proud of them, so I didn't buy one.

Alas, I'm out of time and have to rush off to work. Hopefully by tonight Jerry will have gotten the pictures downloaded and I'll be able to post them. Thanks again, Brenda, for a wonderful and fun weekend, and the great gifts.

And a good time was had by all... That's my description!

I haven't even looked at my pix yet but hope to do so and download them tonight. I didn't get a group shot but did get a couple of candids and a couple of the food.

As was said above, the gethering was lovely. We enjoyed meeting Sharon and Clive and hearing their Canadian opinions of Texas. We were only able to make it for lunch as we made the trip back & forth from Houston all on Sunday. And because of the way we were seated, I didn't get to talk to Sally much, just enough to know I'd like to get to know her better! So I'm hoping for another Texas get together soon!

Thanks Brenda for the jaunt through Restaurant Depot (before lunch) where Nathan scored some cute Chef jackets that he plans to have embroidered with his and his girlfriend's names for use when they cook together (which they often do). Thanks also for the herbs, cajeta, etc, in the goody bag she gave us. WOW! And thanks Sally for the jalepeÃ±o peanut brittle. It might not sound good but that sweet-hot combination is delish!

As always, meeting up with CFers is fun fun fun and I look forward to the next gathering! Safe trip to Sharon and Clive as they travel on to New Orleans before heading home.

P.S. S&C, did you find a way to get to NO from SA without going through H-town?? LOL

Brenda, it's nice to see your family again. Sally and Jerry, I'm happy to "meet" you. Clive and Sharon, you are certainly getting around the country, LOL.

It looks like a good time and the food looks good, even if I don't know what it is, LOL. I think the second one looks especially good and what is all that stuff hanging from the ceiling at Mi Terra? Party decorations just for Clive and Sharon?

I'll keep watching for more pictures...

Looks and sounds like a wonderful weekend all y'all. It's great to see/meet everyone's DH's, kids, and of course Sally for the first time. Brenda you out did yourself with all of the planning and surcies for erveryone. I too will be watching for more pics.

I sure hope Sharon and Clive missed rush hour in Houston!! That would be most of the day from what I remember...LOL!

Thanks Brenda for posting those pics and allowing me to "virtually" visit San Antonio. And thanks all for sharing the fun! And boy does it look fun! And the food looks VERY YUM!

I do so want to visit Texas. I have very, very good friends living in San Marcos and a standing invitation to visit anytime. Now I just need the TIME and the MONEY and both together! A traveling companion would be icing on the cake. Oh, and a convertible! ;)

I haven't seen Jerry yet tonight, but I think he got the pictures onto the computer. I'll have to get his help with finding where he put them so I can post them. Brenda, your pictures look really good.

May, I wish we could have had more time to visit, also.

Mi Tierra's was a very colorful place, but I don't remember it being quite that dark inside.

I'm so glad I made the trip, and I'm glad to get to start meeting my cooking forum friends, too.

What fun!
A few years back, I went to San Antonio with another group from another forum on the GW, and we ate at Mi Tierra...Oh yes and we drank at Mi tierra too!
Here's a picture of part of the group after the Alamo visit...I am the one in the vest.

And this is proof that we were at Mi Tierra.

Funny that that restraunt has been twice the place for a Garden Web get together.

Here we are in Lake Charles LA and lots more to to say about that later!!!

We had such a great time with the SA gang! Brenda , Sally, Mae and their families were an absolute delight to be with.

Thanks Brenda for putting it all together. Lunch was so much fun and we had a great visit. Brenda and Sally are not very good with instructions and brought some wonderful treats for all of us. Sally the peanut brittle is all gone! Brenda if they stop us at the border becuase of those small plastic bags with all that dry green grassy stuff in it...we'll call you for bail! LOL

We both loved San Antonio, what a great city, so pretty and well done but we loved the chance to meet up with some CF friends even more.

Great photos and what a happy looking bunch of GW'ers!
Food looks great too.

Sharon you look so well and rested. I think I would be exhausted after travelling around so much.
But you and Clive appear to be holding up well, both looking tanned and happy!
