Debating 2 front loaders... help!

I've narrowed it down to 2 front load washer / dryer sets.

Quality and sound is a concern.

I need something that's energy star, front load (for a stack able option)

My laundry area is on the main level as my house is on a slab. I need something that will be quiet.

These are both reviewed well on consumer review sites, and they're both on sale at Best Buy right now. I've never bought a washer / dryer before, this is my first house. Does anyone have a recommendation between the two?

Also, I'm usually a nut for extended warranties, but can anyone tell me if they're really worth for the extra couple hundred in this case?

I do not have that model but I do have Samsung FL washer and dryer I got recently and really am enjoying them. I can never tell they are on, I have to go look to make sure they are running. I got mine at Lowes for a very very good price they reduced it a lot so check there and talk them down (they should price match or beat the price), plus got the 18month no interest and I did get their 4 yr extended warranty because their price was great.

Thanks for the input.

I've been leaning towards the Samsung set and I've heard so many great things about them in general. I checked lowes and surprisingly they had the set for $2000. Shopped around and found the best deal with Sears. $400 less and 10% off on top of that.

Hoping DH can get the new gas line running by the time they get here so the only sounds I hear are the cute noises everyone says they make.

I made the mistake of washing sweatshirts with sheets and a very large drum... something I shall never do again! :) What happened? I had a GE FL with 3.8 cu ft capacity and washed small loads without issues, and I don't think it would have been thrown by the weight differential between sweatshirts and sheets (I washed sheets and towels together without issues). I have a set of small Miele's now (w1215 for the washer) and quite honestly, I don't think I do anything in particular, except layering in the laundry (which just means I load it one item at a time... something I did with my Kenmore TL ages ago anyway). I've read the manual for fun, but I don't think it needs to be studied!!! Finally, re: detergent, I used to use 1-2 tbsp but I've found that I really get better cleaning results by using slightly more. And I have soft water so if you have harder water (as 85% of the US does) you might try more detergent if the smaller amount is not removing stains etc.

Baseballmom, these washers are my personal preference to but, for their known quality, and performace. If you want a HE top loader, the Maytage is the best in my opinion. Its a super large capasity, not plastic lids, huge opening and yes the ones with internal heater are the 850 series for sure...maybe the 700 series, but not sure. LG is a grat brand too, none of my friends who have them, have any issues with them and they have had them for over 4 yrs. One thing to remember when you read wash performance on any of these HE machines is that many owners do not read the owners manual. They just use it and then complain of poor results. One "poster" on here admitted. "One day I will sit down and read the manual" Its not rocket science trust me. When people talk about mechanical failures brioon machines, it would help if they include a model number. The older bravos, cabrios, oasis has some issues, since then I beleive they have been worked out. Internal heaters are a big plus in a HE machine, of course some people will tell you it makes no differnce. Most Fl issues are operators induced problems, not the machines design.

I would advise anyone who just purchased or is contemplating the purchase of a front loader to google front load spider failure. For those who would like to watch a video from 2007 showing a disintegrated spider assembly and other quality issues on a GE/Kenmore machine. After seeing the horrifying GE build quality in this video, people should think carefully before buying a GE washer. One school of thought regarding spider corrosion has to do with alkaline residue. Aluminum corrodes much more quickly and easily in a highly alkaline environment. Guess what? That's exactly what detergent does - it creates an alkaline environment inside your machine to facilitate cleaning. When you have a sudsing issue, the suds can rise up and settle onto portions of the spider assembly that may not ever get rinsed off. If this happens, you will have highly concentrated spots of alkalinity on the spider which can cause a very localized corrosion that can spread throughout the aluminum structure. This is also why better detergents contain some sort of corrosion inhibitor, often in the form of silicates. Natural detergents often don't contain these corrosion inhibitors but still create an alkaline environment inside the machine. Draw your own conclusions. This is also why, if your washer has a clean machine cycle, the water level is so high and the water highly agitated. This mechanical action tries to get rinse water into all the places where suds can settle, evaporate, and cause localized corrosion. Once your spider suffers from corrosive pitting, it's only a matter of time before the whole thing falls apart. The best practice, in my opinion, is to avoid it from happening in the first place. That means you should dose detergent appropriately, ensure every load is properly rinsed, and run a clean machine cycle on a regular basis as a check. Another preventive measure is to acidify your rinse with vinegar or citric acid. A lot of people here in Gardenweb already add vinegar to their final rinse. At least in theory, this could help prolong the life of your machine by neutralizing any remaining alkalinity in the rinse. There is no proof that this is actually the case, since no studies have been performed on this sort of thing, but it can't hurt.

M J, Frontloaders are much superior washing performance to the HE "impeller" toploaders. Washing a comforter or other large/bulky items in those is an exercise in futility, there's no way the impeller can overcome gravity to entice the item to roll over for thorough washing. A frontloader by design lifts and rolls the items over through the wash (and rinse) water. As others have said, stay away from washing everything in cold water. Even a designated "Cold Wash" cycle. While it's true that many machines nowadays add some hot or warm water to the fill on a Cold setting so the water in the tub is minimum 60°F to 70°F, using cold exclusively for everything has a large chance of causing mold/residue/odor in the machine, as well as shortening the service life of it. I recently repaired a Samsung frontloader that was destroyed by bad laundry habits in 4 years 11 months. Liquid fabric softener was used on every load to large doses and too much cold washing led to waxy residue on the exterior of the drum (where clothes don't rub on it) that corroded the drum support. The drum broke loose during spin and wore a gash in the outer tub. The machine has an onboard water heater with 1) a Sanitize cycle that heats to 150°F, a Heavy cycle that heats to 115°F, and a tub cleaning cycle that heats to 140°F. Regular use of any/all of those cycles would have kept the waxy residue from accumulating. I tested the designated Normal cycle and a couple others on it, and with 130°F+ input temp from my water heater, I got 80°F on Warm and 92°F on Hot. Consider the difference between 80°F (which is less the body temp) and 115°F or 140°F regards to dissolving waxy residue or greasy laundry soils ... and it becomes clear why washing primarily or more-often-than-not in cold water is not a good thing. One may not see residue insidethe drum where the clothes rub but it accumulates where the clothes (and you) can't reach ... on the outside of the drum and on the inside of outer tub.

I really like the front load bosch units: 500 series. Though bosch is discontinuing their full-size laundry at the end of the year, they are still providing service and parts for ten years AFTER the discontinuation.

No matter what brand you're leaning towards, MAKE SURE to check the service network for that brand in your area. God forbid something goes wrong with your laundry, you want to be able to get someone to service it. Service networks are VERY important.

Get one with a Sanitize feature. I think that particular LG doesn't have one but the Samsung does. Using the sanitize cycle should help it from getting smelly as well.

I have had the Samsungs for a year and love them - largest size of the Samsungs - and they are stacked. Quiet and work well. Have heard and read a lot of negative reviews on the LG's.

We recently decided to purchase a new refrigerator. Looked at a lot of stores. Looked at reviews online. Thought about the fact that my washing machine was also old and might quit any day. Did I want to waste a fridge full of food or use a laundromat? I went with a Samsung french door refrigerator, and I loved it. So much so that 3 weeks later when my washing machine died and I saw that Samsung made those now too, I was sold. I have a different model than you, I think it's the 220. I love it. A couple things.

1. You can't tell it's on. Ok, you can, but it's very quiet. My husband tried to open the door while it was running.

2. Of those two, get the slightly larger one. You want the extra room for washing blankets.

Also, when we first got ours, it had a small drip out the front. My husband said I needed to call Lowes back, and I knew he was right. I had checked the instruction manual and it didn't help (Close the door, well, the door has to be closed all the way to lock and it won't run w/out the door locked, so I'm not sure how much more I could close the door...) But, he wiped the inner seal off and it's been fine ever since. For some reason, I keep getting hair caught right there so I wipe it off between each load.

if you go to lowes do not just look at the prices, talk to the sales MANAGER, haggle with them, tell them you have found them much cheaper, they have a lowest price campaign so they will work with you. I got mine unbelievably priced (I paid $400 for my dryer to give you an idea),(my model is last of the year so the new model is replacing it they need to move that stock) plus they had the 15% off on all appliances, which even if it is off you can ask for it and they may do it, and I got the 12month interest free, you can try for the 18 month interest free too, if it is not running that special all you have to do is ask them to call it in to the financing company and approve it, they have done that for me every time and it has always been approved. I did put it on my lowes card of course to get that, and I did get their 4 yr extended warranty because it was a very good price and since I bundled my washer, dryer and fridge it was even cheaper for the policy.
Times are hard they need sales if they refuse to work with you tell them you will go to their competition.

I absolutely love the pair, they are so quite I have to look at them, and they clean much better than I ever expected, they clean better than the TL they replaced.
I did not want to use any liquids in mine so I use the Sears HE powder and the purex crystals in with the detergent, great combo.

Debating 2 front loaders... help!
