If it's double acting, the heat activated part of the BP would still work, but the chemical part would be exhausted. For your kits, if you have the proper containers, you can also measure out your liquids. It sounds like you'll have something of a kitchen, though, so just mixing your dry and doing the wet when you get there is better. I wouldn't even do the butter ahead, though I believe Tricia when she says it works. I'd just grate it and keep the butter container in the bottom of the chest under the ice. The colder it is, the less it'll clump back up. Or bake ahead and put your goods in air tight containers....See MoreBaked Ham and what else?
Comments (30)Our holiday ham is NewYears day so very easy as a brunch menu...black-eyed peas, biscuits, horseradish cream sauce, collards. DH makes omelets to order. I usually make potato/onion/apple fritters similar to a latke. Very casual. If for a more formal event as a sit down meal i would make roasted root veggies. From the past couple weeks and Thanksgiving. I even left the skin on the winter squash. My family loves to try new things or just chose what they want. Pleases everyone. Makes a pretty centerpiece platter. This one i found i've bookmarked for DH's family. In muffin tins i can make some savory ones for us and then add some brown sugar and a marshmallow half for the kids that want that sort of thing. 375 for half hour covered with foil, uncover and add more cheese (or sweet topping) then toast the tops....See MoreDo you prefer white bread or cornbread dressing?
Comments (46)I prefer a mix of breads, sourdough, wheat, rye, French/Italian, etc. Not into cornbread in there but I'll eat a little of it if nothing else is appealing. I know there's some who insist that cornbread must not be sweetened and to me that's about as arrogant as to insist that tea must be sweetened. I prefer both unsweetened but to each their own. Reminds me of some Youtube videos I've seen where people are saying "you don't want it to be ____..." or "you don't want large chunks (or small chunks or whatever)..." and I just think how the h#$% do YOU know what *I* want or like? Sheesh....See MoreSpeaking of Bacon Grease...
Comments (28)I also keep bacon grease. I have one of those old 50s containers, aluminum, like this, but the lid is black: https://img0.etsystatic.com/015/0/6019962/il_570xN.451533708_b037.jpg I use it for greasing the cast iron skillet when I make corn bread, for frying potatoes, I usually just cook bacon for the green beans. Grandma used it for everything, including hot on her pancakes instead of butter and syrup and for frying eggs. She also made "bacon grease gravy", and sometimes, instead of water she'd use milk because we had a cow that we milked. I used to love the creamy stuff over mashed potatoes, but just the thought makes Elery wince in disgust, so I probably won't make any, LOL. And today, at Meijer, next to the coconut oil, I found a jar of duck fat! I restrained myself and didn't buy it, in spite of the thought of duck fat fries... Annie...See More- 17 years ago
