Cinco de Mayo dinner......pics

Participated on another blog's Cinco de Mayo celebration. I made Pork Chili Verde and a pitcher of Sangria.

With the leftovers I made Moe a Steak and Egg breakfast- Mexican style. Beef tenderloin served with a fried flour tortilla topped with refried black beans, salsa and poached eggs. Moe gave his breakfast 5 stars Plus.

Great hedge of Julia Child, Kristine! Yours totally puts mine to shame since I can't get mine above knee high. I think it's one of those roses where zone 6 is substantially better than zone 5. Along those lines JC, you might consider how tall the roses you are looking for get in your zone. HC, CdM, DB, and BGFT all hover around 3' in my zone and would be dwarfed by even a small evergreen hedge. I have all the roses against the front of my house with the yew evergreen hedge BEHIND the roses, and I can keep all of them trimmed to 3-4' even if some like Music Box and Sweet Fragrance really want to get bigger than that. I can't imagine an evergreen hedge other than the ground cover type under 1' that I could plant in front of roses. In your zone that might be different, but you should check with folks like Lilyfinch in your zone to see relative heights of the plants. I suspect you'd want more of the HT bush shape than floribundas to rise above the hedge, and About Face and Surreal both fit that style. I think the color schemes you've picked will look great in front of those russet colors in your house. Other roses that might pick up that color scheme could be Honeysweet (a Buck rose), Koko Loko (that tan-lavender), Foxy Lady (a great russet Jalbert rose from Palatine), or perhaps Pat Austin (though I think Austins are blackspot prone in your zone). Having an evergreen in front of your roses might help hide some bare canes if they do blackspot, but the heights would have to work. All in all, what you've described sounds lovely but it's a different configuration than would work in my zone. I'm not your best advice about what would work for you except as far as colors go. I've heard I should cut these back by a 1/3 or more at some point, in a warm climate like ours. Does anyone agree/disagree or know when I should trim these back for Spring? Thanks in advance.

Some hand held ideas could be mini empanadas, they could be made sweet or savory. I like this Mexican shrimp cocktail served from a lovely soup tureen or punch bowl. It would require little cups and perhaps tortilla chips for eating. You could do slider sandwiches with either machaca (shredded beef) or carnitas (pork). Albondigas skewers - Albondigas are a meatball soup and the meatballs have rice in them. The meatballs could be placed on skewers with other vegetables one would find in the soup. Or the meatballs could be served with toothpicks for ease. Other skewers could have carne asada or grilled chicken thighs or breasts that are seasoned appropriately. I have also made cream puff dough seasoned with cayenne and cheese (or alternating green chile and cheese) and those make a great appetizer, that is somewhat familiar.

flowersaremusic I agree with the color( I don't think any of the photos here capture it) it does have a russet tea coral almost tan color at the outer edges for the petals. It is a very unusual color. And it scents up my house when I do gather masses inside for a few days. Mine is 3 yeas old(4?) and and it has never stopped being PROLIFIC! It is also getting quite large..like 5ft x 5ft. In fact I am going to have to move it this winter. Unfortunately the flowers don't last as cut flowers..not for me any how and I cut them underwater and all. I love this rose..too bad it is getting so big... they show off in front my large LV RM windows..I live in Willamette Valley Ore. zone 7. Rocky acid clay soil. I am stingy with water. But water very deeply when I do.

oh man, Ann - those pics are making my stomach hurt...it all looks sooooo good. I can't decide which meal I'd rather have...but I keep torturing myself looking...trying to decide...sigh.

Oh man o man. That looks so good!

I had a meeting last night...went to a local Mexican restaurant with friends and had a margarita and chicken fajita nachos. WHOOP!

I would have rathered Moe's breakfast.

I'll take the breakfast version tonight....and.. a slice of that rhubarb pie if there is any left! That leaf crust kills me everytime!

I knew it was gonna be good....

That breakfast killed me!!

I just had fresh salsa topping my just fried eggs, over a bit of sausage and bacon, on mashed potatoes..

Should hold me most of the day...

Yum, Ann, that all looks totally delicious to me, both dinner and breakfast! I had an enchilada craving myself after reading Suzy's blog and that's what we made for Cinco de Mayo. Ann, did you do something special to the beans? I made a quick recipe with some garlic and jalapeno and a can of black beans, but I'd like to know how you prepared yours. Thanks.
