Good news from the vet!!

She peeled the scab off Mickey's leg, and I won't go into all the gory details but she said even though there are signs of infection and swelling, she's not too concerned. She said considering the degree of trauma his leg suffered, he's not doing badly. She prescribed another round of Clavamox (antibiotic), but didn't feel I needed the DMSO.

His temperature is normal.

Best of all, he's gained a pound! Here I thought he was continuing to lose. I guess I can stop begging him to eat. :-)

She liked the idea of reintroducing him to his former rooms in the barn. I'll give it a shot tomorrow. I think Mickey and I have had enough adventures for today.

FIP is NOT contagious to other cats. Your cats can NOT get FIP from an infected cat, in any way, shape, or form. They can get the corona virus (but have probably already been exposed) from another cat, but it is not the mutated version that causes FIP. Basically, FIP is corona virus that through some mutation and some host factors (immunity, etc) cause disease. But the mutated form is NOT contagious. Many times in cattery situations multiple cats do get FIP, but that is because the cats are all related and carry the same (or similar) immunity factors that make them all susceptible to the mutated corona virus. It is NOT because FIP is contagious. You don't have to clean or disinfect or worry about your cats- they are fine. I am sorry about the infected kitty. FIP is a terrible disease. I wish we had some way to predict or even prevent this horrible disease.

Our cat, Heather, has small-cell lymphoma requiring pilling of prednisolone twice a day and a chemo pill four days out of 21. The first pred was purchased from the vet, 60 pills for $20.70 plus tax. I decided to check PetMeds and the cost for 100 pills, including shipping, was $26.00. I placed my order on a Friday and on the following Monday got an email from PetMeds saying they hadn't received the script from the vet yet. Called the vet and they told me they hadn't received a request from PetMeds. So called PetMeds and they said they would re-send the FAX. The next day, Tuesday, I called the vet and finally they said it had been FAXed back to PetMeds. But, by then, I needed some pred to tide me over until the PetMeds pills arrived and asked for 12. Went to pick them up on Wed. and the cost was $20,70 (plus tax). I asked how many - was told 30. I then asked for just 12 and was told the price was the same. So, then I said, give me 60 as I paid that for 60 last time. Then I was told that they could only dispense 30 as the vet was on vacation (there are 8 vets total in the clinic) and no other vet could prescribe. So, I called PetMeds and they overnighted the 100 pills to me and I told the vet's office to forget it. I can only figure out that they have just one price for the pills, up to 60. Anyway, I'm a big fan of PetMeds now. And the chemo pill has to be bought at a pharmacy. RiteAid wanted $33 for 4 pills. Costco's price was 1/2 the cost. So, check around. We found, with a cat who had CRF (now deceased) that lactated ringers were $24 for 12 at Costco and the vet charged $14 for one.

How to find a good vet?

As far as what I would consider to be a good veterinary practice, these are things I am considering as I intend to look for a practice to join next May. 1. Philosophy of the clinic- do they do annual distemper, parvo, FVRCP vaccines? If so, go elsewhere. There is no need for annual vaccines. You also may run away if they recommend giardia vaccines (they don't work). How do they manage pain? Do they ask about pain during every annual PE? Do they give pre and post-op pain control to all surgical patients? How are surgical patients managed? Do they all (except cat neuters) receive an IV catheter, IV fluids, heating blanket during and after surgery, are they monitored by an experienced or licensed technician, do they have surgical monitoring of ECG, BP, temp? Do they require pre-anesthetic bloodwork for dogs and cats over 7 years (they should!)? Do they do tail docks and ear crops (if that is important to you- I personally will not work for a place that does these procedures because they are purely cosmetic). What is their philosophy on cat declaws? Do they provide artifical insemination services for any client who requests it, or do they require specific pre-breeding tests and certifications? 2. Availability: are they open when during times that you are available to bring your pet in? What happens in the event of an after-hours emergency? What about daytime emergencies or urgent needs? 3. Equipment: Their lab should be able to run a chemistry panel, CBC and differential, urinalysis, cytology, and fecal in house if needed. If they use an outside lab as well, is it a veterinary lab or a human lab (veterinary is better)? How long does it take to get results of outside lab work? How long does it take for someone to call you about the results? They should have a tonopen, radiographs (digital preferred but analogue OK), IV fluid pumps. Bonus equipment- ultrasound, endoscope. If these items are not available in-house, how do they handle pets who need these diagnostics? How often and to whom do they refer difficult or complicated cases? 4. Facilities: should be clean! All animals should have water available unless there is a medical reason for them not to (vomiting, recovering from general anesthesia, etc). It should be obvious that every cage has been cleaned every day, and after each patient has left. The patients should look comfortable, not squeezed into a tiny cage without padding. All animals should have a cage card with at least their name on it- prefer also reason for being hospitalized, diet, and special instructions to be there as well. 5. Personality- You should feel comfortable and welcomed, not rushed. You should never feel like an interruption. Your calls should be answered and messages returned the same day unless there is a darn good reason why that is not possible. The entire staff will LISTEN to your concerns and address each one. They will spend time explaining things to you. They will answer your questions in a timely manner. You should be given a written treatment plan with costs prior to most procedures (I like to do it even for annual exams, especially for older patients when I'd recommdend annual bloodwork). When meeting a new patient, I would do the following: 1. Schedule a longer appointment time so I have a chance to take a thorough history. 2. Request any and all previous records be sent PRIOR to the first appointment, and READ THEM prior to meeting you. 3. Address any concerns in the previous records (chronic disease, lack of appropriate PE and monitoring, etc). 4. Ask how YOU think your pet is doing. What are your concerns? 5. During the physical exam, explain what I am doing and what the results of your cat's PE are. I also like to write up the results of the PE for each patient. 6. It should be obvious that a record is being maintained for your pet, either written or computerized. 7. Take you on a tour of the facility, meet the techs, receptionists, and other vets- time allowing. These are just the basics. When I run my own practice, I will most likely do more but that's a couple years away. I hope that you are able to find a vet whose philosophies are in sync with your own. It may take some time, there are a LOT of vets and a LOT of different opinions on everything. I would interview several before making a decision. You are wise to look for a vet before you actually NEED one. Good luck in your search.

Glad he is so much improved. I wish we could see him investigating his newly redone old room. I like to watch cats mark everything with their noses. You could probably write a childrens' book about him and how he had to wear the collar and how so many old ladies from every state were pulling for him.

Did the vet get rid of the scar to promote healing and help with movement?? I can't imagine a ct sitting still for that!! Maybe Mickey won't bother it as much now. Do you still have to do the once a day soaks? What did she say about the collar? Poor Mickey has a lot of Mother Hens now!

I agree with Lynn-gray cats are special! Love the picture.
I'll be looking forward to reading about his Barn Adventure tomorrow. How do you bring him from the house to the barn? I think I would need a carrier for our cats in case they got scared and tried to get away.

Maybe his fur is not as thick since he has been inside for a while and that is why you are thinking he lost weight. Cannot remember where you live but can he spend nights (and cold days) in the house or is the barn heated. He wouldn't have time to regain his winter coat after being treated to house heating.

You know, I didn't even seen her remove the scab. I saw it on the table, and said, "What's that?" She said she took it off to see how it looked underneath. It wasn't a neat scab like it looked two weeks ago; it seemed to have a lot of hairs in it.

She said the soaks were optional, but I'm going to continue at least once a day until my Epsom salts are gone, and then reevaluate. She said the collar needs to stay on for now.

How do you bring him from the house to the barn? I think I would need a carrier for our cats in case they got scared and tried to get away.

I'll definitely use a carrier. Many years ago I had to transfer my daughter Jill's cat, Houdini--a very large and rather neurotic black & white male, totally devoted to Jill but not so crazy about everyone else--across the road. Jill, who was out of town, told me to use a carrier, but I was lazy and just carried him in my arms. All was well until a dog came bounding along. Houdini fought like crazy to get away from me and the dog. Not only did he use his claws, but he used his teeth as well.

I knew if I let go of him he'd disappear, never to be seen again, so I hung on. By the time I got to the house I was screaming for my kids to help me. I remember telling Suzanne to get my wedding ring off while we could still do it. Houdini's tooth had gone under the ring and into my finger. She couldn't do it, but I managed somehow to get it off before my fingers swelled like sausages. He did a lot of damage. I still have scars, and I'm surprised I don't have more. The doctor was afraid I was going to lose part of my index finger to bone infection. What a mess.

So yes, I'm going to use a carrier. :-)
