Looks like you have room for a folding surface or table in the center. Maybe some shelving or cabinets along the wall on the left and lower left hand side.

To shield the water heater and furnace from view (and pretty up the area for you), what about adding a couple of lattice panels? They will still allow air flow and access for repairs. If you have exposed floor joist above (like I had in our last basement laundry area), you could hang the lattice panels from hooks and eye rings for easy removal during repairs. Stain or paint.

There's plenty of area on the door wall to add storage areas for your list of items.

We're in the process of doing our laundry room. My hope is to make it as efficient as possible so that I can be in and out as quickly as possible.

I'll tell you about our plans...maybe it will give you some ideas for your space.

We're going to use a combination of Ikea kitchen cabinets and the Ikea Stolmen storage unit. I like this unit because it's modular and can be changed around with drawers, clothes bars, and shelves. Hooks can be mounted on the vertical supports. It's also very open--so that it keeps the room feeling large. Could you possibly use something like this across the front of your utility wall leaving space behind it and at the ends to leave easy access to the furnace, etc.? The unit attaches to the floor and the ceiling which allows it to be placed away from a wall. This would give you lots of storage--including hanging storage.

So, anyway, this is my plan:

1. West wall--front loader washer/dryer. Ikea base cabinets with deep drawers for storing sorted loads of dirty laundry. Also, a laundry sink. Horizontal wall cabinets (with lift up doors.)

2. North Wall--large window on this wall (2nd floor laundry room.) Ikea base cabinets with doors. Space will be used to store baskets of clean laundry, or empty baskets. Family members will theoretically come retreive their baskets of clean clothes. There will be a small-drawer-mounted ironing board in this run of cabinets. Long stretch of counter will be used for folding.

3. East wall. Stolmen unit and 2 tall 15" wide pantry cabinets. One with pull outs for storage. The other to be used for broom/vacuum/ironing board storage. The Stolmen unit will have clothes-hanging bars, shelves, hooks and drawers. One drawer will be used for wrapping paper so that the folding counter can be used for wrapping. Clothes drying racks will be stored, folded up, under a window on this wall. We do a lot of air drying. I hope to have a sewing machine permanently set up in the corner for quick repairs.

4. South wall--has wall mounted drying racks that tilt out.

We have all the components. DH just needs the time to put them together.

how about a wrapping center and/or craft space for the kids ...or yourself if that's something you're into? i'm making sure there's cable hook up in there too, for a small plasma.

Have you looked at the Elfa storage systems? They're wall-hung and include rods for hanging and adjustable shelves and drawers in a variety of widths and depths. Check out www.elfa.com, which I think includes laundry room ideas. I'm not sure where they're sold in Canada, but you can order online from The Container Store, which also has a complimentary design service. We've purchased a tower of Elfa drawers for the 22-inch-wide pantry in our kitchen remodel. Our "laundry room" is just a glorified closet, but if we ever re-do it, I'd look at Elfa again.

Of course, all this is being written before we've even assembled the tower for the pantry. So I hope I'm still this happy after I start using it!

I'm not sure if I could get Elfa products but they sure have some good ideas such as the ready to assemble pant rack ideas! And wall rack for behind the door WOW!

My laundry room isn't nearly as large, but I wish it was! If I ever build again, I want to have room to keep my ironing board up 24-7. I use a steam generator iron and a steamer with a board. I hang almost all apparel up to dry and use a collapsible drying rack. Actually, I want at least two more of these racks because I hang up most everything these days. Clothes last longer and my gas and electric bills stay lower.

In my laundry room, I have two washers and dryers, which is WONDERFUL! Adding a laundry sink and cabinets, wire shelving on both sides of the room, and a closet to hold six large labeled hampers for dirty laundry to be sorted and other items, makes the room I have now great. I just need a little more room to make it perfect. I can make do now, but find I have to iron either in a hallway (wide) or living room, which isn't far at all. I would also put a different type of door on this room if I had to do it again. I would want in insulated so I couldn't hear the dryer balls when using the dryer to dry sheets and towels.

Although I can't put cabinets above my W & D here are some ideas I like. If I fill up the laundry room with cabinets will it take away from open space (for resale some day) that others look for?
