It's time for some sushi here, so I'm off to lunch, but I wanted to say hi while I was thiking about it.

I also was thinking of Annie while I was planting the salsa garden today. Happy Wedding!

DH took the day off today so I had an unexpected free day. Normally I have to drive him to work and to various meetings, since he can no longer see well enough to drive.

Tomorrow I need to get up to the cemetery to put flowers out since Memorial Day weekend I am doing all the food for my BIL niece's graduation party. I let her decide what she wanted. Sunday is another day of baking mini buns for the graduation and freezing them. I only have 75 more to go out of the 300 hundred.

Rob33 hope you enjoy your sushi.

Thinking of Annie and Ashley too....hope the day is everything it should be.

This is our long weekend and I should be at the cottage but I have to get these darn gardens dealt with before we move. I have huge gardens and this has been such a cold wet Spring I haven't been able to get at them. The weeds are very happy and very plentiful! My back is killing me my legs feels like tightropes and I just want it all to go away!

Clive's at the cottage playing with the toys...I mean getting the boats and the sea doo in the water.......I love that guy most days but he's pushing it this weekend! LOL

My BGF is coming over this PM to console me with some red wine .

Sounds fun (Palm Springs). I'm in New Jersey. Flew here today for my grandmother's funeral. She passed away last week, at 105 y/o. Her life was very full and long, her last year had been in a sort of gently fading twilight, and her death was, it seems, pretty peaceful and painless, at home with no tubes or machines. So her passing was as gentle as it should have been. Life was kind to her, and at the end no less. Laying on the couch, lights off, thinking about this house and the things left over from fifty years of being my grandparents' home. There are photographs, my grandfather's calligraphy scrolls, my grandmother's needlepoint art. Those will be taken, I suppose many have already been over the past couple of years. Then there is the random daily stuff that has no value, but that I recognize from fifty years of visiting and sometimes living here. Old toys and books, dishes, things like that. I suppose it will all be disposed of, except for a few bits that people might take for sentimental reasons. Then the house will be sold, as a fixer because it needs a total remodel, although in a nice neighborhood with a good sized lot. And that may, I think, be it for New Jersey, for me. My aunt and uncle and one first cousin live here, but without my grandparents, my connection to this place, a place I never liked much, will be done. I think I'm going to cook dinner tomorrow at my aunt's. She has a nice Bluestar range and that is where most of the family will be. Her daughter, my other first cousin, is flying in tomorrow. She lives in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where her husband works for the United Nations. I don't think they like it as much as Switzerland, where they lived for the last several years. But the UN HCR (High Commission For Refugees) moves its senior staff around every several years. They don't get permanent cushy posts in comfortable cities; they have to go where the refugees are, so Ethiopia was, I think, better than some places they might have ended up. There isn't much scope for home cooking as an expat in Addis Ababa, I'm told. Especially with young kids who are adapting from their previous Franco-Swiss diet (and life). So I figure she might like a dinner at home, at her mom's home anyway. Menu undecided but I'm thinking about chicken marbela. I also have a hankering for ceviche. They may not go together, but tough. Otherwise, no interesting cooking recently. I have spent the last month on back to back to back business trips. So I've been eating like crap - airport food, hotel food, restaurant food. Occasionally a good ramen or other street food in New York, but mostly crap. As the weeks of this have dragged on, and I've gotten fatter and flabbier, I've started skipping restaurants altogether and going to grocery stores and delis to get "healthy" things to eat. So my diet has mostly dwindled to Greek yoghurt, canned sardines and tuna, bread and cheese, fruit, takeout sushi, and coffee. It's not a bad diet but there isn't much cooking or variety involved. Although I have discovered that canned tuna plus Greek yoghurt plus a little salt or soy sauce makes a creditable and oh-so-healthy tuna salad. And that chopped raw salmon, Greek yoghurt, and one of those super-miniature bottles of hot sauce that you can filch from restaurants makes a reasonable spicy salmon filling. When I get home on Monday, I don't have another trip on the calendar for months. I'm going to cook up a storm, enjoy being home on weekends, re-acquaint myself with bicycling everywhere, lose this travel flab, and appreciate springtime in Portland.

Getting to a chore that I have put off too many years. Hope to finish it this next month. Finishing a tablecloth for a classmate of my son's. He found it partially done in his mother's house when he cleaned up after he death. It has proven to be a far more daunting task than I thought it would be, and my trepidation has led me to put it away too many times.

Chicken rice soup was great, I made a big pot and it was all gone by nightfall. Made the stock from the chicken carcass, 1 hour in the pressure cooker, done as the meat was roasting. I diced the carrots, celery, and chicken breast into neat little cubes, and it really looked cute. Cooked some arborio rice in chicken stock and held it on the side, to be added to each bowl of soup at service (the rice gets mushy if left in the pot of soup). dcarch, that bike looks interesting. I have also seen e-bikes where the motor drives the crankset through an additional chainring, which allows the bike's gearing to act as the motor's transmission. Of course, your legs then have to pedal with the motor, so it is a more "active" sort of e-bike. Supposedly e-bikes are getting popular here in Portland, but I almost never see any on the roads. It makes a lot of sense for heavily loaded bikes - cargo bikes, bikes hauling kids and groceries. The type I'm most interested in use the motor as an intelligent assist - the bike senses if you are pedaling, and adds motor power to the human power in a constant proportion. The principle is sort of to simulate a very strong rider, rather than an electric moped. There is also a "stealth" system called the Gruber Assist that hides the battery and motor in the bicycle's seat tube, and drives the crank through a bevel gear on the bottom bracket, for an invisible and relatively light installation. Wow. That's one nice looking Clematis Edward. Clematis season has long since passed here (except for the yet to bloom but invasive Sweet Autumn Clematis). The hybrid Clematis leaves around town look pretty bad by now from their exposure to our summer heat and various fungal diseases. Your climate sure suites that vine beautifully and again that pairing with Vertical Horizon is a great combination...........Maryl

Happy Wedding Annie! I was thinking of you too as I was planting 2 habaneros for "Gold" later this season. Hope it stops raining someday, the peppers will be happier.

Linda - good luck with the baking - that is a LOT of rolls!And thank you for putting flowers out... not enough people make the effort.

I am crazed this weekend, just got back from a morning of antiquing and lunch with a friend, and am trying to decide what to make... we are supposed to be getting together with friends for Happy Hour, but it is wet wet wet and we were hoping to sit outside. We'll see. Tomorrow is the dedication of Veterans Park, followed by Uncorked, our local wine and food pairing festival. It is highlighting 10 local restaurants and 60+ wines from all over the world. Sunday is Welcome Day, a wonderful little small town street fair to kick off the summer season. I am actually volunteering for both, so there will be some long days, but it is always a blast. There are also several garden tours this weekend, but it just isn't in the cards for me this year.

TGIF from sunny Florida! Today is my daughter's last day of school for the year. She's officially a 5th grader next year. My, how time flies.

No plans for the weekend. It's going to be lovely to sleep in a wee bit longer during the week now for a while.

Happy Wedding Annie & Ashley! (Hope it goes well, considering the world is ending tomorrow... LOL).

Tomorrow is supposed to be "Judgement Day" and then the end of the world is supposed to follow six month later, or so. We've been having employee reviews at work, and so I guess this has been like judgement week. I work directly for the owner of the company, and she doesn't always give me a review, unless I demand it.

Here's hoping Ashley's wedding goes off beautifully, as I expect it to! It's going to be outside, isn't it? I love outdoor weddings. I wanted to get married at Portals of the Past in Golden Gate Park, but that never happened );

Do Canadians get Victoria Day off? I'm looking forward to Memorial Day, but I don't have special plans for this week-end so far.

Lars, I always hated reviews. I was always sure I would flunk. I'm so glad to be away from that kind of BS.

It's been so rainy here I am about to sprout mushrooms. You would think it would be a good opportunity to get caught up indoors, but that hasn't happened.

This morning was haircut and color, followed by taking returns to Bed Bath, then a stop at TJ Maxx, where I didn't buy anything.

I stopped at the Lancaster County Farmers Market (which is not in Lancaster County) and got a quart of local strawberries and a bunch of local asparagus, also some ground beef and a little Lebanon Bologna. As soon as I smell Lebanon Bologna, I become a kid again since we had that all the time growing up.

I also had a Tuscan Wrap made by a nice Amish lady for lunch. It was good. The Amish have no concern for low calorie oor low-fat!

Tomorrow is "free dump day" so I am hauling a car load of old junk over there. It's one of my most favorite days of the year.

On Sunday my friend and I are going to a house tour in Society Hill (historic Philadelphia) and then dinner. We are supposed to get a break from the rain, followed by heat, humidity and more rain next week. Right now the sun is shining and it's pouring rain. Go figure.

TGIF all. Annie I'm sure it'll be a wonderful wedding. Lars, lol...my review is Monday morning. Maybe tomorrow's judgement day would be less painful. I have become grouchier with my board as my tolerance for stupidity dwindles. I'm sure one trustee will make snarky comments.

I have been blissfully shoveling poop all day. We had two dump trailers of manure delivered, and the garden sorely needs it. And I will be sore tomorrow.

Tomorrow is a short day at work and then I was supposed to start a week's vacation, but I have to work Monday because our board meeting (and my review) was postponed. So, after that I'll be off through Memorial Day. We'll see... vacation usually lasts about three days before I have to go in and fix something.

Annie, try to keep your wits about you, girl. It'll be just fine! It will be absolutely beautiful!

Beautiful, warm weather here on the beach .... the inside of our home has been painted and most of the furniture and pictures are back where they need to be ... by the end of the weekend, the work will be done! YEA! Sure. Then I can get back to cooking!
