I also was thinking of Annie while I was planting the salsa garden today. Happy Wedding!

DH took the day off today so I had an unexpected free day. Normally I have to drive him to work and to various meetings, since he can no longer see well enough to drive.

Tomorrow I need to get up to the cemetery to put flowers out since Memorial Day weekend I am doing all the food for my BIL niece's graduation party. I let her decide what she wanted. Sunday is another day of baking mini buns for the graduation and freezing them. I only have 75 more to go out of the 300 hundred.

Rob33 hope you enjoy your sushi.

Happy Friday everyone!

Thinking of Annie and Ashley too....hope the day is everything it should be.

This is our long weekend and I should be at the cottage but I have to get these darn gardens dealt with before we move. I have huge gardens and this has been such a cold wet Spring I haven't been able to get at them. The weeds are very happy and very plentiful! My back is killing me my legs feels like tightropes and I just want it all to go away!

Clive's at the cottage playing with the toys...I mean getting the boats and the sea doo in the water.......I love that guy most days but he's pushing it this weekend! LOL

My BGF is coming over this PM to console me with some red wine .

Happy weekend all, the sun is finally shining and it's delightfully warm.

No cooking this weekend, no interesting cooking anyway. Took daughter to school for her Speech & Debate tournament at 6:30 am. I was not happy about getting up at 5:30 am on Saturday. By the time I got home, it was still dark, but it seemed pointless to go back to bed, so I put on bike gear and went to ride laps up Mt Tabor, our local hilltop park. The "mountain" in Mt Tabor is a very miniature one, it is really just a big hill that used to be a volcano way back when. There are a couple different roads that lead to the top. They start in pretty neighborhoods then climb up through trees and past fields and reservoirs for about a mile, though some are shorter and steeper while others are longer and easier. On my first ride up the hill, I watched the sun rise through the tall trees, and that really made my morning. I kept climbing to the top, circling the peak of the hill which became more sunlit on each lap, descending through the fog and mist, turning around at the bottom and trying a different route up. On one lap I saw a familiar jacket ahead and caught up to it. When I first took my bike to Mt Tabor a few years ago, I met a guy who rides laps up the hill every day. On weekdays he does a few laps as part of his bike commute, on weekends he does laps in the mornings. He'd explained to me that severe arthritis runs in his family, and climbing hills on the bike was the only way he could stay pain free. His mother had both hips replaced, his sister has had one replacement and is needing another, but he is still fit and mobile on his original equipment. I was so impressed that I started riding Mt a Tabor semi-regularly, and have done ever since. But not like this guy. He's ridden up the hill over 40,000 times. When I first rode up the hill it seemed awfully hard, even on a mountain bike with very low gears. I struggled and my heart pounded as I gasped for breath. Now I'm better at climbing, so I ride a road bike with fairly high gears and can have a conversation while climbing, as I did today with this guy. There are much steeper climbs around Portland and I am still not a good enough climber for some of them. The idea I had a few months ago is to make my Mt Tabor laps more difficult by only using the big chainring (that is, forcing myself to use the harder gears) and pushing so that I am struggling on my last lap. I hope it works like weightlifting, where you get stronger by pushing your muscles to failure, and that I'll do better on the steeper climbs now. If I really wanted to be a better climber, I'd lose 20 or more lbs. The best climbers on a bike weigh 140 lbs. But they don't hang around the Cooking Forum either. When I was done, it was still early. I rode to a Saturday farmers' market where they were just setting up. One stall sold breakfast burritos, and I got a duck and lamb burrito (only in Portland). It came fat and hot and wrapped in foil. I slipped the burrito in one of my jersey pockets and it kept me warm on the ride home. Unfortunately, when I got home I was so hungry that I ate the whole burrito and raided the fridge and didn't stop until I'd eaten what I estimate was 1,600 calories. It wasn't even 10 am yet. Talk about undoing all the morning's good work on the bike. And that is why I am not cooking this weekend. I think I need to not think about food for a couple of days! TGIF everyone. I've been too busy to get into the holiday spirit this year. Bagged putting up a tree, and didn't bother with the usual lights. Work is decorated and that's where I spend most of my time. We'll go to The Kid's for Christmas and she's all into being a Martha (Stewart), so I don't feel too deprived. It's a long weekend for me, with a rare Saturday off. It's been an odd week, including bunch of deadlines, contentious meetings and being the victim of a random act of kindness (detailed on the Conversations side). I started out my weekend Thursday night with a deep tissue massage... came home, had a glass of wine and fell soundly asleep in my chair. Ahhhhh....... Today was a trip to town for a doctor appt. during our first real snow. People got complacent, I think...wrecks and ambulances everywhere. So we grabbed some groceries and ran for home. I got my sis's package mailed.... main mission accomplished. Tomorrow I'll wrap the kids' presents, put together goodie baskets for work. Maybe bake something using the wonderful crystallized ginger one of my girls brought me from Australia. Sunday DH made an appointment for a hearing test. At noon. At Costco. On the Sunday before Christmas. argh. Clinking with a cup of eggnog laced w/ rum. Be healthy and travel safely everyone.

Toolbelt ( neat handle!!) I can't speak for the States but in Canada the homeless are almost always mentally ill or addicts. They resist any type of shelter provided to them. Even temporary shelter when it is bitter cold. They are paranoid and distrustful. Another large segment are runaway children that have left incredibly abusive homes. These kids are a bit easier to get to and persuade to take the help that is available. Many years ago the laws were changed so that no person could be held in any type of facility against their will. The hospitals for the mentally disabled were shut down with little or now support put in it's place. It's truly a tragic situation. Part of me says these people should be sheltered for their own well being and another part says they are entitles to live as they "choose" Anyhow, this is a real twist and turn for TGIF but perhaps a good one in that we all need to open our eyes to the unfortunate circumstances of others,

Wow. That's one nice looking Clematis Edward. Clematis season has long since passed here (except for the yet to bloom but invasive Sweet Autumn Clematis). The hybrid Clematis leaves around town look pretty bad by now from their exposure to our summer heat and various fungal diseases. Your climate sure suites that vine beautifully and again that pairing with Vertical Horizon is a great combination...........Maryl

Happy Wedding Annie! I was thinking of you too as I was planting 2 habaneros for "Gold" later this season. Hope it stops raining someday, the peppers will be happier.

Happy Sushi Rob!

Linda - good luck with the baking - that is a LOT of rolls! And thank you for putting flowers out... not enough people make the effort.

I am crazed this weekend, just got back from a morning of antiquing and lunch with a friend, and am trying to decide what to make... we are supposed to be getting together with friends for Happy Hour, but it is wet wet wet and we were hoping to sit outside. We'll see. Tomorrow is the dedication of Veterans Park, followed by Uncorked, our local wine and food pairing festival. It is highlighting 10 local restaurants and 60+ wines from all over the world. Sunday is Welcome Day, a wonderful little small town street fair to kick off the summer season. I am actually volunteering for both, so there will be some long days, but it is always a blast. There are also several garden tours this weekend, but it just isn't in the cards for me this year.

Happy and safe weekend all

TGIF from sunny Florida! Today is my daughter's last day of school for the year. She's officially a 5th grader next year. My, how time flies.

No plans for the weekend. It's going to be lovely to sleep in a wee bit longer during the week now for a while.

Happy Wedding Annie & Ashley! (Hope it goes well, considering the world is ending tomorrow... LOL).

Tomorrow is supposed to be "Judgement Day" and then the end of the world is supposed to follow six month later, or so. We've been having employee reviews at work, and so I guess this has been like judgement week. I work directly for the owner of the company, and she doesn't always give me a review, unless I demand it.

Here's hoping Ashley's wedding goes off beautifully, as I expect it to! It's going to be outside, isn't it? I love outdoor weddings. I wanted to get married at Portals of the Past in Golden Gate Park, but that never happened );

Do Canadians get Victoria Day off? I'm looking forward to Memorial Day, but I don't have special plans for this week-end so far.

Lars, I always hated reviews. I was always sure I would flunk. I'm so glad to be away from that kind of BS.

It's been so rainy here I am about to sprout mushrooms. You would think it would be a good opportunity to get caught up indoors, but that hasn't happened.

This morning was haircut and color, followed by taking returns to Bed Bath, then a stop at TJ Maxx, where I didn't buy anything.

I stopped at the Lancaster County Farmers Market (which is not in Lancaster County) and got a quart of local strawberries and a bunch of local asparagus, also some ground beef and a little Lebanon Bologna. As soon as I smell Lebanon Bologna, I become a kid again since we had that all the time growing up.

I also had a Tuscan Wrap made by a nice Amish lady for lunch. It was good. The Amish have no concern for low calorie oor low-fat!

Tomorrow is "free dump day" so I am hauling a car load of old junk over there. It's one of my most favorite days of the year.

On Sunday my friend and I are going to a house tour in Society Hill (historic Philadelphia) and then dinner. We are supposed to get a break from the rain, followed by heat, humidity and more rain next week. Right now the sun is shining and it's pouring rain. Go figure.

Hope you all have a great weekend --- an HAPPY WEDDING to Annie, Ashley and family.

TGIF all. Annie I'm sure it'll be a wonderful wedding. Lars, lol...my review is Monday morning. Maybe tomorrow's judgement day would be less painful. I have become grouchier with my board as my tolerance for stupidity dwindles. I'm sure one trustee will make snarky comments.

I have been blissfully shoveling poop all day. We had two dump trailers of manure delivered, and the garden sorely needs it. And I will be sore tomorrow.

Tomorrow is a short day at work and then I was supposed to start a week's vacation, but I have to work Monday because our board meeting (and my review) was postponed. So, after that I'll be off through Memorial Day. We'll see... vacation usually lasts about three days before I have to go in and fix something.

Have a good weekend, everyone! Clinking with an ice-cold margarita.

Annie, try to keep your wits about you, girl. It'll be just fine! It will be absolutely beautiful!

Beautiful, warm weather here on the beach .... the inside of our home has been painted and most of the furniture and pictures are back where they need to be ... by the end of the weekend, the work will be done! YEA! Sure. Then I can get back to cooking!

Have a lovely weekend, all!
