TGIF , I think.--
Our family Christmas celebration is Sunday--as usual expecting up to 35-- kids & adults--depending on which of the grandkids bring significant others or drag a friend along--
I've got 5 different cookie doughs sitting in frig still to be baked off-- peanut brittle, tiger bark & microwave caramels to make & coconut cranberry cupcakes yet to do.Doc's out in the yard finally getting outside lights up-- & to give the season a great start I've got a really rotten sinus infection & strep throat--reason the baking's not done--didn't dare until I'd been on antibiotic for 48 hrs-- so my clinking today will be with a hot tea toddy .

Stay warm & safe all--Best Wishes--Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays however you celebrate this year-- spare a thought for those of us in the Military & far from home.

Happy Holidays to you Diane!

I'm not really sure how the next couple of days will go. the upstairs neighbors left this morning for New York and my son is going to be gone until Thursday, leaving this evening. It's gonna be quiet like the grave! Hardly seems festive? I broke my rule last night--we watched A Christmas Story. I never watch it before the marathon. But son won't be around on Tuesday, so it was now or never. Now, I have it running while I'm working. I'm all off-kilter! I am all set to cook, but probably won't until Tuesday. No more sweets. I'm sick of sweets. There have been candy and cookies in my office (central to the labs) all week long. Sweets in the office downstairs that I have to visit for certaint things. I am ready for some clear broth and veggies.

Merry Christmas to All!

Working today (UGH) but seems to be doing everything verrrrrrry sloooowly. Meeting friends for cocktails later, sort of the Friday thing to do. Tomorrow there is an invitational swim meet an hour from the house, not sure I will make the trip since 15yo has been out of the pool all week with ear infections/sinus infections and won't be competing. He will be there to support the team though, and will be happier taking the team bus. Tomorrow night is a Christmas party at a friends - ugly sweater party which should be fun. Sunday we are supposed to go to one of the local organic farms which is having a holiday open house, but it is going to be almost 70F and rainy. Not sure I want to be slogging around the farm in the rain.

Rob - that is one of my fav movies! When we redid the wet bar in the family room we replaced the corner support with a mannequin leg - a la the Leg Lamp from the movie!

Diane - hope you feel lots better and enjoy your family get together. Sounds like fun!

Lovely pictures once again. You have so many hostas---I am envious! The size of the pictures is perfect for viewing. Great picture quality. Nice to see mature specimens---a view of what some of mine may look like one day. So thanks again for posting. I should be getting ready for Christmas, but I must have the hosta bug bad. Happy Happy Friday from Philly (still LOL) Today was a departure as I was asked to attend a training session on the new fangled lottery machines the commonwealth is installing. Now usually I do not work on Fridays as its my day with mom but since our big blow up a few monyhs ago I have been taking more time to myself....mother is not at all happy about it but she is never gonna change so I may as well take advatage of a little me time before I check out. It was fun...I went with a co worker who is really cool so we had fun. Later today I have a new realtor coming out to talk...hmmmm we'll see....hope he has better news for us. Tomorrow I have to work but Amy should be coming home as my sons school hockey team is playing in the all city Flyers Cup...basically the best Catholic team plays the best public team. So a lot of the boys from my job either go to Father Judge or play so my 2 kids will be going to the game. GO CRUSADERS!!! Sunday I should be off and I believe Shanen has some home lined up for us to look at....we'll prob have dinner out too. Before we leave this house I want to have one more hoorah so I want to plan a game night in my new yet unused game room...I have over 50 board games to play, put out some cool munchies and drinks and just have fun....I will try to plan for that in a few weeks but I will start the food and drink planning this weekend. On another note Wed the 25th is DD 20th Birthday!!! And on Mon the 23rd marks the one year anniversary of Stephen and Charles horrific accident...can you believe it already been a year??? So I am clinking with water for now....have a wonderful weekend!! Cheers! Susie

Well must be summer cause the puter is acting up AGAIN!! Seems it goes on the fritz about this time every year...I even took the tower out and placed it in front of the ac unit as suggested by someone here but still no luck. I will post until the old boy kicks so if I disappear you will all know why!! Lets see...Drew has been out of school for a few days now. His final grades were not at all stellar but he did manage to pass and be promoted to the 10th grade. Amy is going back to school next week...not to live but to take a few summer classes...kinda get a jump start on her sophmore year. I know its good for her so I support it. However it will mean no summer vacation for the family. I am not too bummed tho-means we can put the cash away for our move!! Everyone please send good thoughts and/or prayers to dear brother on Tuesday. He will go back to the hospital for xrays and mri to determine if he can begin to put weight on his legs. The resident docs at the home say they feel he can but we have to wait to see what his surgeon says. It will be a wonderful day for him if he can!! It will also mean he will be able to go home by the end of the week and begin out patient therapy!! Oh poor IOWA!! What a devistating flood!! My heart breaks for all involved and I hope the situation improves quickly!! Happy Fathers Day to all the Dads!! Cheers! Susie

Still clear skies, mostly, but getting colder. The leaves are mostly down. I'm getting out the winter clothes and wrapping the backyard up for another Oregon rainy season. We are hoping for snow this year, after four years with hardly a trace. My son wants to build a microscope this weekend, so we'll do that. My daughter may want to go to the darkroom. I want to take one early morning and go for a bike ride. I might go explore some of the steep windy roads in the West Hill that lead to the zoo. Or just do laps up my local hill, less scenic but a more efficient workout. Sometimes I wear a heart rate monitor on these rides. Afterwards I can look at the data and see how my heart rate spiked when the road turned upwards or when the speed rose. The rule of thumb is that your maximum heart rate is 220 minus your age. I think that is bunkum, or at least that it varies so much between individuals that it is no rule at all. I have gotten my heart rate up to 200 beats/ minute, only for a few seconds, but those were exhilarating seconds. On a pretty routine basis, I ride at 170 bpm which is 85% of my max heart rate, or a. "submaximal" heart rate. There is a whole science of training by heart rate - you are supposed to spend X time at 80%+ of max, Y time at 60%, and so on. I don't pay attention to that. I just like to get up to 170 bpm frequently and see if anything untoward happens. It is kind of my personal security blanket. There is another test you can do, which is a little more useful. You get your heart rate up to 150 bpm or so, which might mean a few minutes of jumping jacks or chopping wood or running fast. Then stop, sit down, and see how long it takes for your heart rate to settle down to 100 bpm. It should only take one or two minutes. If your heart continues to beat at a high rate for much longer, that is a worrisome sign. This is called "recovery heart rate". Finally, there is "resting pulse". The true resting pulse is taken when you are laying down and completely relaxed. In the morning, right after waking up, is a good time. Some people have a high resting pulse, some a lower one. The interesting thing is how it changes. If you get serious about exercise, you can lower your resting pulse quite dramatically. That is a sign that your heart has become more efficient, which is a good thing. I've been thinking a lot about getting older. My kids are only teenagers, and I'm fifty. I don't know when they will have kids. When I have grandchildren, I want to take them riding and skiing and fishing. That means I will have to be strong and athletic into my seventies. Gulp. My dad had a heart attack in his mid seventies. My neighbor is seventy-five and has CHF and PAH. I've got a lot of work to do, anyway that is how it feels, so I get on the bike every day and push until it hurts. It actually is kind of pleasant to hurt. I think I've learned a little about masochism. But I digress. What were we talking about? Cooking. I'm going to go through my Momofuku cookbook and make some Asian comfort food. Daughter is getting interested in sushi so we'll make some basic rolls. Son is a big ramen fan, we'll roast some pork and leeks and make a big hot bowlful. I'll make some meals for my neighbor with the health problems. And I think I will try baking bread again. I was on a low-carb kick this summer, but it turns out I need some carbs. Carbs = glycogen. Glycogen = muscle energy for efforts longer than a few minutes. No carbs = weak muscles. Doesn't work for me.

I'm chomping at the bit to watch Darlene Love singing "Christmas - Baby Please Come Home" on the David Letterman show tonight - a holiday tradition since 1986, although this year is the 50th anniversary of her originally recording it. We'll be at a party tonight but the host will flip it on if we're still there.

Not too much cooking going on this weekend, since I made and froze quiches for Christmas brunch yesterday. I'm going up to the Dairy Store this afternoon to pick up an eggnog order for our neighborhood co-op.

I hope everyone has a happy weekend and doesn't overdo it in the kitchen.

We'll spend the weekend driving to the SF Bay where we will house-sit for a friend at their home in the Berkeley Hills, for two weeks. I will work from the laptop in the mornings, go on bike rides in the afternoons, catch up with our friends in Berkeley and San Francisco, and put together an improvised holdiay dinner or two.

Oh Diane, hope you are feeling better by Sunday. I have always loved listening to you tell of your family gatherings and the menu! To me it;s what Christmas is all about.

Nothing tonight or tomorrow, Sunday we have an open house to attend assuming the weather permits. Calling for a huge snowfall.

Tomorrow I am doing some cooking in preparation for Christmas day , three types of yeast rolls, and some chipolte cheddar biscuits. Ill probably do the cranberry sauce and ham sauce as well. Might wrap himself's gifts if her gets lost for a bit.

Other than that just some hot tub and wine time! LOL

I just finished decorating the tree. I'd have had it done two days ago but one of the strings of lights died and I didn't get a new one until today. At least it was 50 percent off!

My house is pretty much a mess, so I will spend most of the weekend cleaning. I thought my niece was coming next weekend, but now she is coming early on the 26th , so I have less time to clean upstairs than I thought.

I think I am going to a Christmas party on Sunday, so even less time to clean. Oh well. I may be cleaning on Christmas Day.

Still have few last minute items to buy. Wish the Amazon stuff would get here so I could finish the wrapping.

TGIF everyone. I've been too busy to get into the holiday spirit this year. Bagged putting up a tree, and didn't bother with the usual lights. Work is decorated and that's where I spend most of my time. We'll go to The Kid's for Christmas and she's all into being a Martha (Stewart), so I don't feel too deprived.

It's a long weekend for me, with a rare Saturday off. It's been an odd week, including bunch of deadlines, contentious meetings and being the victim of a random act of kindness (detailed on the Conversations side). I started out my weekend Thursday night with a deep tissue massage... came home, had a glass of wine and fell soundly asleep in my chair. Ahhhhh.......

Today was a trip to town for a doctor appt. during our first real snow. People got complacent, I think...wrecks and ambulances everywhere. So we grabbed some groceries and ran for home. I got my sis's package mailed.... main mission accomplished.

Tomorrow I'll wrap the kids' presents, put together goodie baskets for work. Maybe bake something using the wonderful crystallized ginger one of my girls brought me from Australia.

Sunday DH made an appointment for a hearing test. At noon. At Costco. On the Sunday before Christmas. argh.

Clinking with a cup of eggnog laced w/ rum. Be healthy and travel safely everyone.
