One more update-stolen guns

After we were able to get our guns back, we kept in touch with the Sheriff's office and told them who stole them, etc. But the guy was never picked up! We knew he would be eventually, but we wanted him off the streets.

So one day DH was making a delivery to a customer and right down the street was the creep! He was washing a car, so DH got out of sight, called 9-1-1 and the police came and arrested the creep. BUT we found out he was picked up on an old outstanding charge of Assault IV, and could potentially be released the next day of court!

So we go on the horn and started pushing for burglary charges, but were getting no where. DH called the DA's office, I sent emails to the Sheriff, and we were thinking of going to the newspaper if we didn't get some result soon. We were told by the DA that they didn't have any charges! Finally he was charged with 3 counts of 1st degree theft (felony) but we really, really wanted him to get charged with burglary, because he DID enter our home while we were not there. Finally we got somewhere...they have now charged him with 1st degree burglary as well as the theft charges AND he's still on the hook for the assault charge (could be plead down to a misdemeanor). I guess he's got a past felony conviction, and we're a 3 strikes state...so if he's got more than one felony and gets convicted of one of these additional ones, he's gone!!

In any event, we're going to appear in court at sentencing to plead our case and hope he gets jail time and can't plead down. We told the DA that we discovered other things missing, power tools, mechanics tools, little things that you don't always record. We couldn't provide proof, so we didn't add them to the list, not going to make an insurance claim...but it probably adds up to another $1000 when we start to assess what is missing. The DA told us to prepare a list because that will be used against him anyway.

So, dilligence on our part is going to make a difference. We're hoping to get this creep off the streets for a long time. Other victims are coming forward, and we're encouraging them to write to the court too. DH has definitely learned a lesson here! NEVER allow creeps into our lives again!!
