That is a big one, certain to become bigger. And it looks great by the way. Years ago, after reading that the bush form of Maman Cochet was a smaller tea, I tried to grow her in a very large container. Well, she didn't "sleep" the first year, she leaped almost from the moment I put her into the patio pot after getting her mail-order from ARE. She outgrew that large container in one growing season. This rose has charming blooms that look like they came from an old impressionist's painting. Randy

Oh suzie2003's post reminds me! One June, years ago, we had our wood floors refinished. Because of the humidity, it was too tacky for the guy to finish them for days. It didn't bother me but it drove my DH crazy. Every day the flooring guy would show up, crawl across the floor on his hands and knees and then say, no, it's still too tacky for the next coat. The guy even came to the house on a Sunday morning, clearly looking like he rolled out of bed, his hair all sticking up, slapped a tool belt over his cut off sweats, and came to our house to touch the floor. The floors look great and, to me, it was worth it so when we added hardwood to the kitchen we called the same guy back. He seemed to be the poster child of what can happen if you breath in too many fumes. But we also suspected it might have been more a result of a misspent youth.

If you want additional storage on the back of the island (instead of seating) it seems to me your cabinet maker or carpenter could easily add some open shelving (cookbook shelves?) at the back...but it would be easiest to add now before the countertop goes on. Another nice option would be glassfront cabs, 12" deep and 36" high, for storage of nice dishes and serveware. I think it will look better without a 12" overhang if no seating is planned there. So if you want a 3' deep island without seating, plan to add more cabinetry now. BUT--this is going to not jive with how the round part is added, looks like the round part is set to go on top of only 24" deep cabinetry. So if you add another 12" of cabinetry, your round part is likely going to be too small for the amount of seating you want. ALSO - I question why there are only corbels under the round part. This might mean they have not planned a countertop overhang at all on the rest of the island. Which means you might end up with only 25.5" of countertop which would NOT be as your plans indicate. Agree you're going to need more support for the round part. Finally, if all is set and done and unfixable, maybe get some narrow saddle stools to stash under the overhang? Hey, Alana. Thank you for the update! I was actually thinking of you and your rose the other day as I walked through the neighborhood. You must be psychic because I have been planning to unearth this post from the forum history. (I use the word "unearth" to imply laborious digging. I am at a loss as to how to search for old threads and need to figure out the new system.) I want to offer a bit of my experience with the two HMs, Nur Mahal and Sky Rocket. I have never seen either one hit that true dark red note that your rose hits. In my experience, they don't deepen to that color. They tend to have more crimson-pink undertones. I would swear up and down that your rose is Dr. Huey except for the pink "sport" in an earlier photo (which really stumped me) and, now, the suspected remontancy. I also wanted to share something really odd that I spotted last summer in Portland. A number of neighbors are growing what I believe is Dr. Huey. The circumstances are right for Huey--neglected or abandoned garden or a cluster of contemporary cultivars that seem to be sending out shoots of rootstock or plants in formerly neglected gardens which are now tended by new homeowners. Last summer, I could have sworn I saw later blooms on some of those plants that I believe to be Huey. If my year hadn't been so crazy, I would have stopped to photograph the blooms/plants. This year, I'm hoping that I'll have time to keep my eyes open for the impossible, and if I see it, I'll swing the car to the side of the road and pull out my phone camera. Can anyone speak to this phenomenon? Does Huey carry the possibility of minor remontancy when growing under some set of unusual circumstances? I hesitate to even mention it for fear of sounding like I've lost my mind, but last year rhododendrons and camellias rebloomed, as did my Magnolia soulingeana. Carol
