Advice on buying a washer and dryer?
Comments (27)Well, I wasn't actually going to share those darn pictures one more time, but here they are. Mine aren't stacked, but they are elevated; the built-in laundry bins are great. The reason I initially moved the laundry into the closet was to bring it up from the basement as stairs were my downfall. ;) (Yes, that was a bad pun.) While trying to figure it out, I realized my house had a major lack of closet space (or any space) on the main floor to house dirty laundry. Originally there was a laundry chute from the main floor to the basement, and it would pile up into mountains of laundry before I made myself go deal with it. I wanted something easier and more efficient that saved space, as I had very little to spare. From my least favorite laundry job which was sorting, a good design was born. It's listed in the Laundry Forum as the Luna Laundry System. Ann, considering your affinity (and mine) for great appliances, I wouldn't hesitate to look at the Mieles. You'd probably have to spend more than you want, but less than your Lacanche. Considering the fact I expect to have mine for the next 25 years, I consider them an investment. Getting clean clothes from a small space is a beautiful thing. Jessy, don't I recall a picture of you sitting in front of your front loader watching it go 'round? Am I crazy, or do I remember flames? Since I'm ''sharing'', you should!...See Moreplease help!- complicated stacking in tiny laundry area
Comments (6)I have a Frigidaire (Kenmore 2003 FridGEmore) set stacked, in a small utility room (larger than yours, however) near the back door, on a wooden floor over a crawl space. I do not have any special plywood layer on the floor. I don't have any problems with excessive vibrations. I'm not going to tell you that there are no vibrations or noises at all, but I don't have any banging, house falling down, (whatever other horror stories you have heard) vibrations. My old Top Loader vibrated and made noises, and the FL is much quieter. The sounds the FL make are DIFFERENT than the sounds a TL makes. I often suspect that is why some new FL owners complain about FL vibration and noise: 1) They are paying close attention, now that they have this new-fangled washer. 2) Over the years, they became very accustomed to the sounds their TL made and just learned to "tune" them out. They probably haven't paid attention to the TL sounds and vibrations for years, and sort of forget that the TL does make noises and has it's own type of vibration issues. Most importantly, make sure your Frigidaire FL is properly leveled. I know there are threads on this forum that give instructions on how to balance a FL. Some have recommended doing so while the FL is spinning, to get the best "attunement" as it were. Your utility room floor is attached and stabilized by the nearby outer wall. If you can get into the crawl space, you can install additional supports under the floor by using something similar to the deck block below. Comments (13)A 120v circuit cannot run a 240v dryer, different plug types and 120v power isn't strong enough to make the machine run. You'd have to bring in an electrician to install a 240v circuit and outlet. That being said, some 240v dryers can be wired to run on either 120v or 240v power (by changing how the machine's internal wires connect at the terminal block where the cord attaches) ... but the result is that the wattage output of the heating element is 4x less at 120v than at 240v (which is where the slower drying time comes in). Of course a dryer that is already factory-wired for 120v is also 4x less wattage than a comparable 240v dryer. A dryer designed for only 120v power cannot be run on a 240v circuit. A 120v circuit can provide a maximum of 1,500 to 1,800 watts (irons, coffee makers, portable space heaters, hair dryers, etc.). A 240v 30 amp circuit can provide up to 5,600 watts (dryers, water heaters). Volts X amps = wattage. 240v x 30a = 7,200 watts ... but electrical codes limit circuit loads to 80% of the full wattage for safety reasons. Electric ranges typically are on 240v 50amp circuits (they can pull more power than an electric water heater if the oven and all the burners are on at the same time)....See MorePairing a top load washer with a front load dryer and pedestal?
Comments (34)I didn't think I had mold either until I pulled back the rubber gasket and took a look. Then what I found there and inside the detergent dispenser was beyond disgusting. I have always left the door open all the way since it was brand new. Now I also leave the detergent dispenser open and I still get mold. It's impossible to get the mold out of the gasket so I will need to get a new one for about $300. It's difficult to get your arm in the dispenser socket to clean as well. This washer/dryer I was told to be one of the best front loaders by 4 different mom and pop appliance stores (Electrolux) and I 've had 5 service calls in 5 years and my husband and I are empty nesters. My neighbor who got the Speed Queen at the same time as I got my FL has had NO service calls and she has 3 kids. I will not be replacing the gasket and instead will get a new Speed Queen top load washer and dryer. I don't need all this hassle. Photos attached....See Moremara_2008
