How to seek contractor to replace air conditioning indoor blower

I have a Trane XE 1200 central air conditioner with gas furnace. I am in San Jose, CA area.
The indoor blower motor is getting quite noisy lately. Originally, this blower motor was supposed to have two speed, and run normally in slow speed. But the installer made it only run on high speed most of time, except when the air conditioning is turning off, and slow speed kick in for the last 20 seconds. Now the blower is rattling noisily. What should I do to find out more so that I can seek contractor to replace with another quieter motor?

You have all the information you need. I suggest contacting a Trane or American Standard dealer about replacing the motor.

Am unable to get to the motor.

Most likely need to find contract to do this work. I am in Milpitas, near San Jose, CA.

I want to find out any alternative and better quality motor / blower out there so that I can replace better and quieter blower.

What size motor do you think I have? Any suggestion for better motor / blower?

Tigerdunes,to your questions: 1. The existing furnace and AC are both by Lennox, 3 ton condenser. Not sure of the exact furnace specs. 2. The insulation seems fine, but I'm certainly no expert. Replaced some of the windows in the house recently with energy efficient vinyl windows. 3. I'm about 4 miles from the coast, so the winters are mild (typically lows in the 40s and 50s during winter) and the summers can get pretty hot (hottest month is probably August, with typical highs in the mid to high 80s). Even when our AC did work fine, we didn't usually run it unless it was very hot (i.e., 90s). I never thought I would complain about getting a low quote, but what I've received was lower than expected. I would be more suspicious, except that both of these contractors come very highly recommended on Yelp (for whatever that's worth). Thanks again for your help, I appreciate it.

OK, first to worthy: Believe it or not, statistics are one thing, but reality another. My cute little 5000 btu adequately cools the SW bedroom as well as the larger living room nearby. I sorta shiver when I go in there. ...The identical AC adequately cools both the SE kitchen, and even somewhat extending into the NE room where I sleep. Any cooler, and I'd get sickened, due to my health condition which causes me migraines and achiness in cold/dry temps. Which is why for me, a quite-distant 5000-btu set on high, is perfect. Furthermore, I have it on a Brinks timer, where it's on awhile, off awhile, on awhile, off awhile. To Ionized & others: Actually (as stated above) I had already had a handyman build a wall fan into the wall. Problem is, the current fan is cheap plastic and very weak. But if that cheapo fan were replaced with a high end one, it could circulate the AC air from SW b.r. into the NW master b.r. can it not? Now, regarding the 10-by-10 north-facing b.r. which has stupid sliders all along the north wall. So what to do about that? So my question is, if I put a high-power AC into the wall in the spot where the attic-fan switch is (see pic of NW master b.r.)... ...would that reach down the narrow hall all the way to 10-by-10 north-room too, if I close the bathroom door? In which case, the problem is solved. Because I'd have one AC for SE kitchen & NE b.r. (works fine) the other AC for SW b.r. & living room (works fine) finally, a larger AC for Master b.r. & 10-by-10 north room ......with both bathroom doors closed (or need they be? If you analyze my layout carefully, do you agree to that as a solution? Would there be problems with putting the AC where the attic fan switch is? (The fixture has both the switch, and an outlet in it). Also, as you can see, that pitiful strip of wallspace is only 20 inches, so can an adequately powered AC be put in there, so as to reach the fairly distant 10-by-10 room down the hall? Lastly, would Central AC be cheaper than running three ACs?

Well, I could do 3 Goodman units for that price in Dallas. I can do 3 Payne units for that price also. (Carrier brand) If I charge full price, I can still do 2 units with a couple of thousand less in price. You may have a higher labor factor, but not that much. I expect to do a replacement system in a maximum of 2 days. I have done a complete replacement including repiping the gas, running new ducts, Bringing the ventilation to code, new exhaust vent thru roof, in 2 days. I am fat, old, and not as fast as I was when I started. It ain't rocket science.

Quote #1 does not include increasing the size of the ductwork which needs to be done because you are replacing a 2 ton with a 3 or 4 ton (depending on the quote) and a 1.5 ton with a 3 or 3.5 ton. Quote #2 also includes zoning equipment/controls. There is a VERY large discrepancy in size of existing units vs. proposed units(both quotes) Did any of these contractors do a heat loss calculation? You should ask to see a manual J, which will determine the proper size system for the home. I understand the size needs to be increased due to the additions to the home, but what is the proper size? I would not sign any contract without a heat loss calculation first. That is the basics. Post back and we can continue this. Or email me @ woody22478@yahoo.com. How old is your furnace? How large is your house. I assume the winters in Milpitas are mild.

The motor is probably a 0.25 or 0.5 HP size. Your motor may have failed prematurely because either your furnace is too big for your house, and/or your duct work is too small. A furnace which short cycles puts a lot of wear and tear on the motor. In addition the motor has to do a lot of extra work if it is trying to push the air through a constricted filter or duct work. These things kill blowers.

I don't understand why the installer would limit the blower to run in the high stage only. This could also have contributed to an early failure.

Find an HVAC contractor who can evaluate your system. You don't have to find an industrial strength motor. The new motor will outlive your current furnace if it installed properly.

Thank you. The current motor doesn't seem failing. It just make louder annoying rattle noise. I think if I get this blower service, I may as well replace with quieter blower.

The house is around 2100 sq ft tri-level in south San Francisco bay in Silicon valley. The top floor is over 15F high than the bottom floor in the summer. That's why we limited the duct output on the bottom floor to get top floor cool.

Is there anyway to get replacement two speed motor which allow the motor speed manually set by external switch?

A rattling noise is not normal. It needs to be investigated.

The furnace and air conditioner have to run at the proper speed. If the fan speed is too slow, the furnace can overheat. This is a dangerous condition. It could also cause the coil to freeze when the AC is running. Running the fan too high is inefficient and will cause the motor to die early again.

Get a qualified HVAC tech to replace the motor set the appropriate speed. If your third floor is hot, then you either need to add more insulation or you need to improve the duct work up to the third floor. A 4 ton AC should be able to keep a 2100 sq. ft house at 75 degrees on the hottest summer day in the Bay area. You can't overcome duct work problems by playing with the blower speed.

Something else you might look at.... it might not be the blower motor at all. It could be the blower wheel starting to come apart. Most of the wheels have the veins pinched or squeezed on to the main hub. I have seen many loosen over time and even seen the hub spinning without moving the actual blower wheel itself.

You might also have a broken motor mount as well.
