I just received the quote for the trane hvac to be installed in new home.does this seem outrageously high?please let me know.We really want the trane but.Any opinions on what I can do to save using the trane?

Forgot to ad, There was a MANUAL J and D calculation performed.Please reply. Im open to suggestions, opinions and anything in between. Also, We are building in Georgia.

Both are good systems and reliable equipment. Personally I do favor and strongly recommend Trane equipment. Your bigger issues are finding the right installer and getting a load calc performed to determine sizing. I think 3.5 tons is definitely conservative for your climate but am more concerned about the quote for a 100k input furnace (Trane). Trane does in fact make an 80k furnace with a 4 ton blower that I am quite sure (confirmed by a load calc) would be more than enough to make your home comfortable all winter. Really no excuse to oversize furnaces for marginal efficiency gains that may or may not be realized taking into account the other losses/consequences of oversized equipment. The XB14 is a fine unit, very much like the XR15 with less sound deadening features and a different cabinet. If cost difference is not much more I would probably go with the XR to get the compressor sound blanket and slightly nicer cabinet. Would be more similar to the Lennox XP14 in terms of sound. But neither the XB14, XR15, or XP14 are loud units at all in my opinion. The IAQ is a great thermostat. Model number is YTH9421. Your contract lists an "8000 IAQ" -- this is ambiguous and misleading. I would want the IAQ set up for dehumidify on demand. By the way: new lineset or 4-5" filter included?

1. Those are Lennox model numbers, not Trane. They are also for R-22 systems, if that matters to you. Some people prefer the new refrigerant, R-410A, as R-22 is being 'phased out.' I personally like R-22 better as a refrigerant, but at this point I would go with R-410a systems. 2. Lots of tonnage. Many times new systems are oversized. If they are, you will pay for it in the long run with repairs and higher utility bills. Ensure they did a load calculation 'Manual J' to determine sizing. Don't accept any 'rule of thumb' sizing. 3. What is the Unico system for? Can you describe the type of system you are getting in more detail (i.e., conventional A/C and furnaces, separate duct systems for heating and cooling, etc.)? 4. I don't like the idea of zoning a single-stage 5-ton system unless done very carefully. That's a lot of airflow you're dealing with, and it has to be done correctly. Just some ideas to get you started. I can advise further once I get some feedback.

Tigerdunes, I'm getting closer to firming things up but something new popped up in the process. I'm now comparing quotes for a XR-16 AC & a XV-80 Furnace. Initially these units were based on 15.5 SEER with a 120K BTU but then we discovered that the 24" wide furnace would not fit up my attic stairs so they revised the quote with a 14.75 SEER & 100K BTU system. This other furnace is 21" wide & they also had to change out the evaporator coil to be narrower. I'm being told that the price would not change but that doesn't seem right to me...bottom line, I'm getting less in my opinion so why wouldn't the price be less? Can you give me some guidance, should I push for a price reduction? Below are the 2 systems. Thanks so much!!

The biggest problem with HVAC zone systems is knowing when to choose it as a solution and when not to. Some HVAC companies it's about "sell, sell, sell" whether or not it works... there's more money in "sell, sell, sell" --- when it's only about money? So does the comment above mean I do it for free? No. If you think that you are reading things that aren't there. New construction? best to choose separate systems 9 times out of 10. In order for a zone system to work, you have to know what you are doing. Most HVAC companies staff (the techs they send you) are 20-30 year olds. How much practical experience could they possible have? It's best for HVAC zone systems to be an elegant solution. A HVAC zone system is a tool in the tool bag. Not all homes are suitable for zone systems. Some homes there is no other way, and in some cases complications to those problems will make an HVAC zone system design possibly more prone to problems. You have a problem now, do you want more problems. These decisions among others are decided "in person" --- so considering that becareful what information you decide upon from the internet. Just because it's here doesn't necessarily mean it's true. That said: Depending on equipment level chosen, how many different floors you have in your structure, how much room you have available... will all be factors that make you decide one way or another. From there it's in your best interest to pick a contractor that is skilled: especially when it comes to HVAC zone systems. (there's a lot of garbage out there.) $13657 for the first floor and $7183 for the second floor, total price=$20,840? How many square feet are you heating/cooling?

Sticker shock seems to be the norm when pricing HVAC systems. I was blown away when a dealer priced a complete Carrier system out at $25k. My home will be 2000s.f.

I priced a Trane XL19 4 ton w/ 90%AFUE gas furnace, sheet metal duct w/mastic, touch screen t-stat, and Clean Effects. Total install in new construction is $12,867

Cuda71 the house has 1500 sq ft walkout basement ,1500 sq ft main floor and 500 sq ft second level.In addition to this quote I also received another quote for a lennox system that was 24K the hvac contractor that gave us this quote did not do a manual J or D calc. I asked him if he did this his response was you really dont believe people really do those do you , I said if you want our business you will provide me a copy of the manual J and D calculations. He said he will do it for two hundred dollars and he will schedule it to be done in a couple of days, needless to say we have never heard back from him , This is a huge hvac company in atlanta. The first quote I received was for a tempstar system it was in the ball park I thought @ 12K but no manual J or D calcs. He does the rule of thumb he suggested 6 ton for basement and main and 1.5 tons for the upstairs , sounded like overkill to me . If any of you TRANE guys are located in north east georgia and would be interest in a hvac quote let me know.

For $20k, I would consider geothermal. For any system you get for that price, I would make sure that you get a 10 year PARTS AND LABOR warranty.

What are the heat/cool load calculation for each zone for the lower level and the 500 sq ft upper level?

$7183 for heating/cooling 500 sq ft? Why not add this area as a third zone off a sgl system?

I would prefer a two stg heat pump system to handle a home with multiple zones. You need to verify dealer's experience with zoning controls.

I also recommend you get a quote for a Carrier Infinity HP system with zoning controls.

For the Carrier Infinty w/zones if I get a quote for this system what kind of price range would I be looking at I know you cant get exact but what do you think a ballpark price would be for this System.Thanks for the replies they are very much appreciated as this is one area of home building Im clueless in, I had a Builder buddy of ours tell us that a good system for this home should be in the 8k to 10k range depending on what mfg we go with, His hvac Guy doesnt do manual j calculations and doesnt know how to thats the only reason we didnt use him.
