Comments (5)Jt Some questions please. What is your location? What size home living area? What size furnace and eff are you replacing? What size AC are you replacing? I would like to know the exact mdl number evap coil for each quote. What thermostat is proposed for the Carrier quote? That is a big difference between the 96% eff Carrier furnace and the 80% eff Trane furnace-both 60 K input. That would be about 56 KBTUs output on the Carrier and about 48 KBTUs on the Trane. Not insignificant. I don't care for some shortcuts that homeowners make particularly on reusing linesets and using existing thermostats that shortchange a nice furnace's operational capability. Post back with the info requested. IMO...See MoreNew Trane HVAC System help
Comments (18)This is my first post on TGW. I will be the first to say that my experience with Trane is very subjective and anecdotal, but the following experience is mine nonetheless. We bought an existing single story 2280 sq. ft. home in Auburn, AL in May of 2012 (15 months ago). One thing that sold me on the home was the presence of a Trane 14SEER HP with variable speed blower installed in 2007. In June, one month after purchasing the home, we had to call the local Trane company to come out for a non-cooling situation. By August, we had replaced (due to actual failures, not just "failing") the compressor, the blower motor, the blower motor circuit board. All but the circuit board were under a part warranty. However, with labor, freon recharging, etc. We shelled out over $2600 in 2012 alone. In March of 2013 we had to replace a startup capacitor, not under warranty, for $400.00. All told, since June of 2012 (this post is made in early Sep 2013) we have spent well above $3,000.00 on this Trane HVAC system. In that time, I have learned (from an independent, well respected local HVAC guy) that our system is woefully OVERsized. We have a 5 ton unit in a space that, I believe, calls for a 3.5 ton unit. We have $500 power bills in the summer months. In general, I think Trane makes a great product like BMW makes a great car. You should just know what you are getting into. The most urgent comment I would make to anyone buying a Trane is to DEFINITELY get the maximum parts and labor warranty you can get and make sure it's transferrable to a new seller. Comments (9)Thanks Tiger, Harlemhvac electricity is 12 C / kWH (worksheet matches bill) Natural Gas is $1.70 / thrm (Carrier worksheet - my actual bill shows is a bit lower $1.3 /thrm) The Carrier worksheet shows breakeven temp for HP as 37F. I did ask about the lineset - R-11 flush is what was recommended. The Carrier person also remarked about the 'more than adequate' and 'good' duct work (they will do some tests - sorry too technical for me - trying to catch up as fast as i can) The Trane quote does include 1 Honeywell media air cleaner and 1 AA700 humidifier thrown in (included in cost). Upstairs with regular filters - was saving me from going to the attic (I guess yearly maint would be time to change filter- so I will get media filters for both zones) The furnace mdl number is indeed TUD.. (just reread the scribble) - thanks Tiger: I did go over some of your numerous posts and saw that you singularly do not like the Trane XL16is and also the Carrier HP would not have the 'electronic demand defrost". I have asked the Trane dealer for the coil mdl numbers. They are a bit backed up as Virgina has a $1500 discount per system (no limit per household) going on- to be redeemed within 30 days of reserving it. Hope to get the mdl numbers tomorrow. Will also be getting three more options from another visit by another dealer today. Will get that tomorrow hopefully. 1 Some combination of Comfort + Infinity 2 All Infinity (so 2nd all Infinity quote) 3 All Lennox system thank you guys for all your posts on this forum (reading a lot since I discovered this yesterday) and helping me specifically...See MoreHelp with Trane HVAC Quote!
Comments (3)great equipment...the only item in your quote that gives me pause is why the 80 KBTU furnace. I would think 2 60 Ks would be more than adequate. Make dealer explain this!...I assume both furnaces will be placed in a basement. For your location, you don't want a high eff furnace in an attic location because of potential freeze ups unless attic is fully sealed. Not concerned about the sizing of the AC condensers since they are 2 stage models. I prefer Trane Perfect Fit media filters over the Honeywell. Cost difference should be inconsequential if dealer wants your business. Nothing special either way about the pricing. IMO...See Moretigerdunes
