Ugh, I am getting old

Or my taste buds are. I bought a jumbo pack of packaged chocolate chip cookies and the taste is soooooo bad. I can't remember the last time I bought packaged choc. chip cookies but they were on sale so they got me. The kicker is there is a big "Improved Taste" sticker on the front. I find this with a lot of foods though - pizza pops, canned pasta foods. I can't do them anymore, the taste is so off-putting. I still let the kids have them occasionally but my husband has to prep them - they make me gag. I ended up making a layer "cake" with the cookies whip cream, cookies, whip cream, etc. and that helped.

LOL, Cookie, I think our tastes change as we go through life, plus, if I stop eating something for a while, it never tastes as good as I remember.

There was a place in Muskegon called (yes, really) Doo Drop Inn. They hand cut all their onions and hand battered them for onion rings, the things were to die for and they sold them by the platter full along with hand battered Lake Perch. When I found out about cholesterol, I stopped eating them. The last time I went to Muskegon I just had to get an order of onion rings and lake perch and they were greasy, the breading was too heavy, they weren't nearly as good as I remember.

That's why I keep tasting things I don't like, sometimes my tastes change. I used to dislike peanut butter because of the texture and now I love the stuff. I didn't like winter squashes for a long time either, now I could make a meal of it. I'm working on olives, wine and white pasta with red sauce, LOL, I'm still not wild about any of those things.

But I keep trying them....

the_gurgler, The approach most people take for livestock is shocking, I agree. However, I've talked to a rancher in Mason, a couple in Fredericksburg, and one north of Austin who have nearly eliminated their inputs. Here's how that went... These people are all doing it the same way following Allan Savory's approach. They stopped medicating their animals. They get no shots, dewormers, or hormones. The few animals that get sick get slaughtered rather than medicated. In addition their offspring are slaughtered. This soon results in a herd of healthy animals that really do not get diseases or parasites. When you stop medicating for worms, the population of dung beetles returns to the pastures. Ask any modern rancher when the last time he saw a dung beetle was and he'll have to think hard about it. For the old timers it was back when he was a child. For the new kids they think dung beetles are a mythical creature. Then these ranchers stopped buying seed and fertilizer. Every year the universities come out with the latest and greatest seed varieties to make up for the problems with last year's seed. Of course there is a new fertilizer regimen for the new seed. But once you stop using seed and fertilizer, the only plants left growing are the natives that were here for millenia before we arrived to correct the situation by plowing and growing corn. The native plants are also known as forage for the animals that lived here for millenia. In order to ensure those plants return every year, these ranchers create lots of small paddocks out of larger pastures. They will put about 300 cow-calf pairs onto a 50-acre site for 1-2 weeks depending on how fast the forage is growing. Then they move them to another 50-acre pasture. By the time 2 weeks is up, these pastures look like the surface of the moon, so the animals are lined up in pecking order to move into the next paddock. When you have 15 pastures like that, it takes 30 weeks for the animals to return. In 30 weeks you are likely to get some rain and the forage will be waist high or higher. Interestingly, these paddocks are completely free of dung when the livestock leave, because the dung beetles process it on the fly (so to speak). Twenty-four hours after the animals leave, the dung is all processed and buried in the soil as fertility for the next season's crop. The secondary benefit of dung beetles (which I believe is the primary benefit) is they dig thousands of tunnels in the soil that allow for the complete capture of any and every rain that hits the ground. There is no runoff or erosion on these ranches. These ranches no longer use herbicide because everything that grows is forage. There is no such thing as weeds to livestock. If you get some plants that cattle will not eat, chances are excellent that goats or sheep will eat it. These ranches no longer use insecticide because that would kill the dung beetles. Besides these new "organic" fields are filled with birds now who are going after the dung beetles and other insects. The third benefit of the dung beetles is that any parasites that were in the cattle dung are "processed" along with the dung by the beetles. Those parasites die before they can infect the livestock because the livestock will not be back to that same paddock for six months. Flies are among the parasites that no longer affect these animals. The only input left is minerals to replace the minerals taken out by the cattle. It turns out that the major mineral removed is calcium but the cattle like other minerals, too. In particular they happen to love the minerals in seaweed. So by providing seaweed and calcium supplements freely to the animals, they will spread them back around on the ground and the dung beetles move them down into the ground. When the dung beetles dig their holes that capture water, the water is ALL absorbed by the soil and eventually gets used either for the forage plants above or it seeps into the water table, streams, or aquifers. This replenishes the water supply rather than allowing it to run off and away. Dry creeks and streams refill and the riparian areas return to health bringing birds, fish, and aquatic plants. The U Bar ranch in New Mexico was so successful with their riparian areas that they now have most of the entire world's population of the endangered southwestern willow flycatchers - and those birds were never seen in that area before the cattle were brought in to "fix" the soil. By fencing the animals into smaller paddocks and teaching them to walk through an open gate, there is no need for cowboys hooting and hollering and riding around trying to find the strays. There just aren't any. The total investment for infrastructure is for fence wire. The total input for animal maintenance and health is seaweed and calcium. Except for the seaweed and calcium, these ranches are completely self sustained. So what are the results? At the end of 9 months, the calves weigh in around 675 to 700 pounds. That is normal in anyone's book for cattle growth. While other ranchers spend up to $400 per animal on variable costs (meds, seed, fertilizers, herbicide, insecticide, cowboys, special dietary supps and extra feed, and special equipment), these ranchers spend more like $35 per animal. The sales bring the same back to all the ranchers so the ones with the lowest cost make the most profit. Can they do this on a sustainable basis? The ranchers I talked to have been doing it for 20 years and they only get better at it. They have generally doubled the customary stocking rate that their neighbors are able to achieve. As far as I know no other agriculture system in history has approached this sort of sustainability. The keys are fencing them into small areas and rotating them when the next paddock is ready. This system mimics the natural migrational type of grazing that animals do in the wild. They do not move on until they are out of food or predators push them on. The leave behind a soil that is free of vegetation and ready for the next rain. They migrate from the south in the spring and from the north in the fall. This gives them two passes at their forage during the year. I realize there is a no cow movement going on but I think that would be a disaster. The Earth has relied on grazing and browsing animals since the dawn of time. We just bungled livestock management until Allan Savory put all the pieces back together. His methods are in use in every continent and seem to work everywhere. It if works in the high dry desert of New Mexico, it should work just about anywhere.

Dawn, I ain't asking Momma nothing because she never shuts up! More on my young-un's Properly cooked, I like them just fine. I can remember Granpappy taking me out into his garden when I was about their age. He would spot a bird and tell me "That's a yellow bellied sap-sucking scissor swallowing North American Kestrel" and I would go "Yep - that's a bird alright!" There is this one little girl that is just too cute for words. She is the one that heels well. She has these humongously thick glasses and she constantly walks into things. Mostly because she gets this - uhmmm - stuff on the lenses. So you have to follow her around with a bottle of windex and a squeegee. Where did March go? Heck, I am still trying to figure out where 2007 went. I know I participated in that year due to the fact that I am still breathing. My lettuce? It is strange. The first sowing sprouted fine so I went ahead with the second. It sprouted fine, so I went ahead with the third sowing. Well It sprouted just fine. Now it is all just sitting there. All the same size. All not growing. I know what is going to happen. Instead of the normal steady crops of lettuce taking us right on into the hot weather, I am going to get one huge crop all at once. Generally in this garden, I can sow a crop of lettuce as soon as the first one sprouts and it all works out good. And generally, I can get six or seven sowings. Not this year though. I suppose I could can it up like the other greens - but with the spring work season coming on strong, I just ain't ready to start canning yet. It will be alright, I reckon. Miss Susie Lynn: I ain't coming down to move that heavy stuff for you - alright? And I sure ain't looking to get hitched up! Unless you make really good cornbread and greens. And maybe some buttermilk too. No butterflies up this way yet. But it's coming! True story on the Hummers: Down in Honduras, there was this Gal I was sort of tracking down. I kind of wanted to marry her. One day I came home from whatever it was I was doing at that time and found her there cooking me a surprise dinner. It was pretty good, so I asked what it was. She told me it was Sopa de Colibri. I said "alright then, show me what a Colibri is." So, all proud like, she takes me out to my back yard and shows me. She had taken a hammock and made sort of a butterfly net which she had used to capture a whole bunch of my hummers that came to feed on the feeders and flowers I had put there for them. So, I am standing there in shock trying to figure out just how in the world one responds to something like this. I mean, to me, that is like telling you that the fried chicken you just ate was really a Bald Eagle. Needless to say, I didn't marry that Gal. It did change the whole dating thing though. Now, I make sure to ask things like this - "you're not going to make me eat any hummingbirds are you?" G.M. My baby sister is named Dawn. Not this Dawn though.

Matt, we were told at a local paint store that you can try pouring mineral spirits on the oil, then sprinkle kitty litter over the oil/spirits. Supposedly the mineral spirits draw up the oil, then the KL absorbs it. I can't say whether to use regular or 'clumping' type KL. Of course I would try this on an area of driveway not readily visible.I feel your pain, my DH has an older cycle that leaks PLUS his hobby van leaks- sheesh! Good luck.

Since I've had the Sjogren's Disease my food tastes have changed dramatically. For months, I blamed it on my dental work. When I finally, half joking, complained to my doctor she ran blood tests &, sure enough, there's a reason why beef tastes ghastly & I don't like Ritz crackers anymore. It affects my taste buds, my sense of smell, & ability to chew/swallow. I've never had cravings for salty stuff before but now I'm tempted by things like potato chips because the salt initially stimulates the saliva glands and, as a result, my mouth isn't as dry & uncomfortable. The problem is that salt ultimately makes the disease's symptoms worse by drawing out moisture. My new best friend is "Oasis" moisturizing mouth spray!

I've gained some weight because my eating habits have been horrible for over a year now. Not knowing why...only that I couldn't chew or swallow a green salad, plain bread sticks to my mouth & won't go down but if I smear it with a heavy dose of butter I can get it down, BSCB is just impossible to eat unless I smother it in a heavy cream sauce, & my changed sense of smell has made virtually all green veggies repulsive. No small wonder I've gained weight.

One time it will be the Greatest you ever tasted, next time
it may be, not too good.

Then again, it may be Natures way to make you eat less.
We don't exercise the same as when we were younger, so
You shouldn't eat as much.

Yeah, there is so much that I can no longer eat, but there are things I like now that I used to dislike.

I can't ride roller coasters anymore either.

Tricia, sorry you have so many health challenges.

I know my tastes have changed; I can barely tolerate anything that is really sweet. Most times I only have a small portion of dessert just to be polite. Once in a while I might think I want something sweet, but usually if I wait a little while, I'll forget about it.

When I was a kid in the fifties, Hershey bars (the milk chocolate ones) were the most wonderful thing in the world. Now they taste waxy to me.

Don't know if it's my taste, the product or both. Certainly some companies have changed the formula. Coke used to be made with sucrose, now I think there's HFCS in it.

Well, I am expecting right now and on a sweets binge so the cookie thing should be a no fail. Considering that it was - that's bad. Should have got the Oreos!

Now that I think about it, there have been quite a few products that I liked, but once they were "New and Improved!", I didn't like them anymore.

This may be a whacko idea, but maybe something in the recipe/production may have changed and they KNEW it changed the taste, so they put the NEW AND IMPROVED label on there to try to CONVINCE us that it still tastes good, and hope we fall for it.

The food we purchase now at the grocery stores just isn't the same as what we grew up with. HSCS instead of sugar, no transfat,no real butter, artificial flavorings and who knows what is in the stuff imported from China. If we buy something made in the USA, it may still contain ingredients imported from whatever country is the cheapest. We are lucky if chocolate chip cookies have any real chocolate is them.

My latest big disappointmentw as pepperidge Farms "original!!!" sandwich bread! Gummy, nasty, left an antertaste and when you toasted it, it still was moist and gummed up.
Nope....the oldf ashioned things are just made cheaper...not as mych cocoa i hershey bars, guar gum in everything.
We used to buy a local brand of cottage cheese....just pure and simple cottage cheese, no preservatives, no thickeners just milk, rennet, salt and cream. And it would turn very quickly, you had toe at it in 3 days or it would sour.
Well they chenged the formula, added thickeners and preservatives.....and it keeps for a week or more.....and it's nasty! I have taken to buying another brand.
don't mess with my old fashioned stuff!!!!

My husband and I are convinced that Ritz crackers don't taste the same anymore. Sort of sweet and flat (if that makes any sense). Very disappointing, as we both really liked them. We are now in the process of trying different brands to find a replacement.

No, that "NEW AND IMPROVED TASTE" is for one reason that they DON'T tell you. I have noticed this (taste change) with a lot of products. One comes to mind as we speak.....ever hear of Entenmanns Bakeries????? They have (had) the BEST cakes, pies, etc. around. I bought a package of their Cheese Buns that were always good. When I bit into it, I thought I was eating cardboard. They tasted stale, but the fresh thru date said, May 15th. That was on the 6th of May. I called them next day and complained, which I normally never do, but, for $5.99, for 6 buns I want something decent. I asked them what happened to the recipe, did they change it? She said they must of changed it, or something to that effect. Yeah, they changed all right. They are eliminating a lot of key ingredients that make them taste good. Same as Campbell's Pork and Beans.. They are not the same as years ago. Why??? Because they took out the chunk(s) of pork that flavored the beans. Why??? HEALTH REASONS. Too much fat, too much cholestorol, too much salt, too much this and too much that.B.S. And what Pisses me off more is that they raised the price of everything. What a racket. She said she will send me coupons for another or whatever I want. Great>>>>>>>Just what I need. Cookie, Donna is right on the money with her post. EVERYTHING sucks lately. Bettor off making it yourself, your ingredients, in the privacy of your home. P.S. sorry for sounding so nasty. Just had to get that cake issue off my chest ,lol. Tony

Cookie, I think you are on the right track....things are not the same, but I have often wondered as well if we could have the exact same thing would it be like we remembered.

Teresa, your post about sweets reminded me of something I saw about wanting to do housework but if you lie down for awhile the desire passes, I'm all about that. Strangely enough I never cared that much for sweets, rather have bread but in very recent years have acquired a taste for sweets. That's bad.....but I still love bread more.

I don't think you're getting old either - just a bit more refined, perhaps.

I remember hearing about the Doo Drop Inn when I was a child because JFK visited there, I think. There's another one in Colorado, but it's not as old. In San Francisco, there was a Doo City Beauty Shop on Divisadero that advertised, "Get yourself a Doo City do." I never did get one because I didn't have the right kind of hair.

I think I'm getting a bit pickier now about what I will eat, especially in terms of packaged foods, which I almost never buy, unless it's from the Japanese market. Although I liked salt as a child, I really have an aversion to it now, and many packaged foods are too salty.

I think they changed a lot of things too. Cheaper ingredients probably. Even when we went for a dipped cone at DQ the coating was more like wax than chocolate. I think the thing is to make things at home. I found a recipe for chocolate dip that hardens and I used premium ingredients so now I can whip Revello's, Dove Bar and DQ's butts. And for the cookie thing - had to make my own which were chocolate cookies with white chocolate, milk chocolate, almonds and caramels all chopped up and added to the mix. I don't think I can find that in a box anywhere.

I'm sure our taste buds change with age and even from medications taken, but I also think they have altered the recipes on many things. I've noticed it with these rarely-purchased foods. Saltine crackers don't taste like they used to - neither do graham crackers (and both are so much smaller than they used to be they looked odd to me).

I made an old family favorite recipe that I hadn't made in years that uses Nabisco Ginger Snap Cookies. The cookies were horrible!!! Nothing like they used to taste. Hubby took a bite of a cookie and even noticed how bad they tasted, and he's not known for his discriminate taste.

I don't think you're getting old-- I just think once you taste enough nice homemade desserts, the various mutations of sickly-sweet, high-fructose corn syrup plus hydrogenated soybean oil don't taste as good anymore :-). I think your blood sugar has to be desperately low for that stuff to taste good.

You're right, Lars, John F. Kennedy made a speech in Muskegon, I think in 1960, at the Doo Drop Inn. He was a Senator then, I don't know if he had the onion rings, LOL.

Cookie, I agree, you should have gone for the Oreos. It's one of the few things I loved when I was a kid that I still love.

I think one of the issues with commercially prepared food is that they make it cheaper, trying to make a profit. As consumers we expect a much bigger portion than we did when we were children, we've "super sized" everything. I think in many instances quantity is taking precedence over quality, so that a huge portion can be provided. The items then get bulked up with cheaper ingredients so a profit can still be made.

I am soooo glad I took the time to read this thread.... you have validated my feelings exactly!

Even the basic cooking products have changed. I've had to rework recipes because all of the baking chocolates aren't what they used to be; and other recipes too that used one or more commercial products as part of the recipe.

I've long thought that "new and improved" actually means "made cheaper and smaller".

It's funny that it was the chocolate chip cookies that got to you. For some reason, as much as I love homemade chocolate chip cookies and almost all cookies I've never ever liked storebought chocolate chip cookies. Oreos, yes. I agree there are so many products that have changed ingredients and almost always for the worse although sometimes I think it's a matter of what you have gotten used to and having that change. Our tastebuds really resent when you expect one taste and another comes across.

Don't even get me started on shrinking packages. It's a standing joke around here about a "pound" of coffee or whatever.
