Maytag Bravos TL HE washer Clean cycle

I love my "new" (about one year old) machine only one small complaint...I can't do a soak cycle, bought the wrong version...who knew. Anyway I am wondering about the cleaning cycle. It has an alarm light that reminds me it is time to clean. I used the Affresh sample the first time and since I have just used bleach in the clean cycle. I am wondering if there are any other products out there that would work. Or is the bleach I am using fine? I leave the lid open which probably accounts for the fact that I have no odor or mold problems. The Affresh is pretty pricey and want to make sure that the cheaper bleach I am using won't cause problems with my machine.

SmellyWasher gets good reviews and is cheaper, too. It's also gentler than bleach. That said, if you say you take care of your washer and it has no smell to it then why clean it? Cleaning cycles are really only for those people that don't maintain their appliances...

Couldn't you soak things by either turning the washer off or simply pulling the plug?

You can open the lid for a few minutes to "force" a soak. Don't turn it off or unplug it, I'm pretty sure if you do either all the water drains out.

It's actually Whirlpool's patented "Catalyst" system. What happens is at the beginning of the wash cycle the washer adds just enough water to mix with the detergent to create a super high concentrated mix. Then the washer spins the clothes at a few hundred rpm to plaster them against the side of the wash tub, and then pumps and sprays the detergent concentration mixture onto the clothes from the inside. What happens then is the detergent mixture is then extruded through the clothes by centrifugal force from the spinning wash tub. When water & detergent get through the clothes they drain into the bottom of the outer wash tub, and then get pumped and sprayed again. It's Whirlpool's way of getting super concentrated detergent into the clothes before the washer has to fill up with enough water to float the clothes. It's a very effective cleaning method on soils and stains that respond best to the chemical action of detergent.

Thanks for the info dadoes! Well, at least the particlar Bosch HE front loader I have won't properly wash my queen quilt or the cotton/polyester mattress pad I have. The issue is that neither gets completely wet on the inside- when I've taken out both, there are areas that are wet, others that are bone dry (the machine spins at 1,200 and gets clothing almost dry, but in this case, when I mean bone dry, there is no hint of wetness). I've tried a couple of times with both items, but have given up and now go to the laundry mat. In neither case is the drum completely full, loosely packed there is still space a the top of the drum. It also won't completely wash the pillows I've tried. that is a tricky one because when trying to wash one pillow, the machine does not spin all the water out properly because it isn't balanced, although the pillow does get wet, two pillows do not get thouroughly wet, but do spin okay. I should mention that the Bosch manual on this model is a joke and has virtually no information about properly loading the clothing, detergent levels, etc. I err on the side of caution and lightly layer in the clothing and leave space at the top of the drum. There are other reasons I don't like the machine- I find it particularly hard on my clothing- for example, several times after I've washed a brand new dark cotton shirt, the shirt comes out looking faded and worn around the collar and lower hem, something I would see in my old top loader only after several, several washes. I use Tide which does not contain an optical brightener and turn my clothing inside out. My husband's dress shirts only last about a year now, the collar takes a beating and the fabric pills. Stains are hard to remove. The top hem of my sheets have permanent creases which won't iron out- I had a sheet that was 12 years old that had this happen to it and I'm upset about that one because I rarely find sheets of that quality anymore. I won't go on, but I do want a new washer. Right now I'm leaning towards the Cabrio, especially if the mechanics are virtuatlly the same in both the Whirlpool and Maytag. Thanks! Barbara

And you can let it continue until it's through, or you can Pause the washer and let laundry soak longer. * I thought in the owners manual it said it does, but it will drain and stop after the soak cycle runs. Yes, it does, when the Soak cycle finishes. * I actually wash my work jeans and T shirts on sanitary cycle in my HE3T with soak cycle. The Bravos 850 also has a sanitary cycle. * How hot does the sanitary cycle her in yours, anyone know? I've never taken its temp, but it gets REALLY hot. I think the manual tells how hot it gets. * Its nice of you to remember me Mara, Im not on here much anymore, been working a pile of mandatory overtime all summer long :( but now I can pay cash for the new set when decide on what to get. Me too, gates -- working longer hours. Glad to know you're getting overtime! The increased pay sure does help. It is SO NICE to be able to pay cash for appliances and other big purchases. * One more question..what exactly is the "deep rinse"? DOes it fill more than the wash cycle or just not the spray rinse that is on the bravos. I rarely use the spray rinse, simply because I must use the deep rinse in order to use fabric softener or vinegar (or both). I'm assuming it does use more water than the spray rinse. My dd has used the spray rinse when she's washed her clothes (usually on the Quick Wash, when she's in a hurry for a particular outfit). Her clothes came out fine. I hope this helps! My Maytag Bravos washer has a Wrinkle Control cycle which I use for the great majority of our nicer office and church clothes. I use the Delicates cycle for more delicate fabrics and the Hand Wash cycle for the most delicate fabrics and sweaters. I use the Medium spin with the Wrinkle Control cycle and the Slow spin with the Delicates and Hand Wash cycle. When I wash towels and jeans/T-shirts, I use the normal wash cycles and fast spin. I haven't yet had ANY problem with wrinkling OR tangling. I have found the main way to prevent wrinkles in jeans is not to overload the machine (which is emphasized in the manual). My washer does not have an agitator; it has an impeller. The clothes come out much cleaner than they did in my former conventional TL's.

Thanks. Dianne47, that is exactly what happens if I turn it off...the water drains away. It will only allow about 5 min from pause to cut off if you don't start it back up. So much for a soak.
whirlpool, there is a light that comes on the control panel that indicates a cleaning is due. It can be reset by pressing cancel. The manual says if you cancel the cleaning cycle, you need to rinse out the detergent and softener dispensers by running a rinse and spin cycle with an empty machine. I am not sure what would happen if I ignore the clean warning too long. Probably smells would develop over time, so I just wonder if anyone has used only bleach as a cleaning agent in this cycle.

Nothing will happen of you ignore the cleaning message - if you maintain your washer properly. That is if you run hot washes on a regular basis, use chlorine or oxy bleach and enough detergent. Cleaning cycles are for those people that don't do any of the above and have gunk in their machine as a result.

Great advice Alex and so true. I had my FL for over 9 years, never had a mold or smell issue. Its all in you you do your wash and the temperatures you use.

Murphy, I too have a Maytag Bravos washer, and love it!

When the 'clean' light comes on, I just fill up the bleach dispenser (to the highest level) with Clorox and run the Clean cycle.

Sometimes when I wash very dirty/stained laundry, I do soak it. You really don't have to have a Soak cycle to do that. You can just hit the Pause button (just one time), and the washer will stop right there. I have soaked laundry overnight this way and then pressed the Start button the next day to resume that cycle and let it finish.

My washer is making a ratteling sound a few time in the rinse and spin cycle, and when i turn to the clean cycle i put affresh in it and its estimated time is 1:02 mins but it only takes about 5 mins before it beeps that its done.............Please Help I payed almost 1900 for my pair exactly 2 years ago ..........dont tell me im gonna have to dump more in them.

Mara, at what point or time remaining do you hit pause? I can't tell when mine has enough water in it to soak, wish I had gotten the see-thru lid....LOL
Sorry I haven't responded before now, "life matters" got in the way of computer time.
Jay, wish I had an answer for you. Mine goes through a whole cycle before beeping that it is done. Are you sure that it is done in five minutes or is it just a signal that the lid cannot be opened?
I am afraid you may need to have a repair person look at it.
My posting may bring this to the top of the list and someone else will see it and help you. Or post a new message with the noise issue in the title.

My apologies, Murphy. Somehow I missed this question when you posted it. Good thing Karen bumped this thread up!

I usually wait about 10 minutes to hit Pause on mine (setting the kitchen timer reminds me to check on it). I make sure the "Wash" light is lit up when I hit Pause. HTH!

If you use Clorox in the 'Clean Washer' cycle as I do, I would advise you to wash white towels, or something similar, in your next wash load, as it seems a bit of residual Clorox can still be in the dispenser and/or go into the next wash load. My DD learned this the hard way when she recently washed a swimsuit. :( Lesson learned. Thankfully it wasn't her best swimsuit.
