Window AC is leaking some water inside; Can't remove grille

This is a Hampton Bay Model # HBQE060. It's tilted properly to the outside. I don't have the manual. This is the first window AC in which I've been unsuccessful in removing the front grille. There is one small, shallow bolt on each side of the cabinet, and those won't budge. If anyone knows how to remove this model's grille, please post that info.

I've been running my window AC unit a lot lately, and in the past few days I've noticed the window sill and some of the floor below getting a little wet. I shut off the AC, cleaned up the small amount of water and put dry paper towels on the window sill; those paper towels ended up getting soaked.

I thought that maybe the water was from condensation that occurs sometimes when it's humid, so I started up the AC when everything *looked* dry. That night, I saw drops of water coming out from where the power cord exits the housing and out from where the grille meets the housing. Now when I push my fingers on the underside of the grille, a little water comes out (cord is not plugged in).

I feel stupid asking this, but in this situation, is it dangerous to run the AC in this condition, even if I continually use paper towels? Is this problem most likely the drain pipe being clogged?

I don't know what to do if I can't get that cover off the AC. I'm moving in the Fall, so it's not worth it to buy a new AC, and hiring a service person will cost more than the unit is worth. It gets very hot & humid here, so it will be an uncomfortable summer without AC.

Turn the screws a little harder? You should be able to get it off.
Can you get to the outside, and see if you can stick something any drain holes that look clogged?

over40, I tried with all my strength to loosen the bolts, and they won't budge. I'm not even sure you need to remove them in order to remove the grille, since the bolts are not on the grille part.

I'll have to get someone up on a ladder outside to try to see in there. There's a sparrow's nest under my AC with sparrows using it now.

You just answered my first question. I thought they looked like they were aluminum clad. The miters show the material being thinner than any vinyl product. Finding a leak in a multiple mulled unit is very troublesome at times. The leak can be coming in at a higher level and working it's way down. The best way to try and dial in on the area it's leaking from is water testing. Get out the old garden hose and ladder. I would also remove that trim board on the inside below the triple unit. Take the garden hose and start on one of the outside triple units. Set your nozzle on stream and spray the window straight on. Hit each corner and then along the brick. Do this for around two minutes or until you see a leak forming. Do this with all three windows and don't spray above them yet. If a leak occurs while spraying then you'll know where to look. You can try and track it down by looking in the cavity you pulled the trim off. Just use the process of elimination to spray the window down and hopefully you'll find it. Then let me know what you find.

I had to do some temporary fixes with windows that were rotted that looks similar to yours. I just had to wait until I could afford it. I used that wood hardener like you did. To fill in the void after digging out all the rot I used whatever, small pieces of wood. I would put some wood, or something solid under window to keep it supported. I also used some spray foam, use the stuff for windows and doors, it is not supposed to expand so much. I also used some wood putty (not the stuff used for filling nail holes) There is a wood putty that is ready to use, I think made by the same place that makes wood hardener. The other wood putty, it's a powder that you mix with water, Durhams. I then painted/primed to give it more protection...I had 5 windows that looked similar to yours. When we got enough money together to replace we had to replace the bottom framing and a stud or two on a few of them. Yes, I do think the sill/bottom is a support. They are nailed into the side, but the bottom I am sure is "what holds it up." Also, I spray some bleach around the area to kill mold spores, I read somewhere a mixture using borax is good for that too. But after wetting it with the bleach you need to dry it out really good before you seal it all up. The two windows that I had to have studs/bottom 2x4 (that supports the window) replaced I had to tear out drywall and dried it out using fans and portable heaters.

Let me run something by you. All modulating systems run out of modulation and start to cycle at some point whether they are boilers, compressors or furnaces. Zoning, vs. more systems, makes you reach that point sooner.* You will, of course, have some spill-over demand from areas that are not calling for heat or cool. Well in some situations I think it is more about putting the cooling or heating where you want it. Will there be spill over? Sure there can be, but the idea is to be more comfortable in the area of the home you are actually using. This will reduce operational costs because the system won't have to run as long. Could this cause more cycling... sure you bet. But if you are more comfortable for less operational cost what is there to argue unless the system breaks down more. So far I simply haven't seen more breakdowns in zone systems that I've installed. (I've seen it in zone systems installed by builders.) Commercial applications have had zone systems to varying degrees much longer than the residential market for the sheer reason of not only trimming operational costs but also reducing the number of comfort complaints. As far as modulation goes or cycling -- whether regarded as short cycling or load satisfying sure every system is going to cycle at some point because the loads are reduced to that point. Short cycling in my view is only detrimental to a zone system when the system doesn't run long enough to return oil back to the crankcase of the compressor. The absence of oil will seize up the compressor. Other than that.. what difference does it make? If this situation happens infrequently it could lead to the demise of the unit. But it's unlikely to happen for a very long time. Even if you run the system without zoning there is wear and tear. So I think this is more related to being told one specific thing but not applying it properly to what is actually happening. I am seeing differences in my last house to this house, but I am using different equipment than the other house. While it's nearly identical in comfort for the most part the bill is a bit higher. (I think) I haven't sat down and really compared bills that closely. This house I am living in is not complete like the other house as I know I have some thermal envelope problems still in this house I am in now. So until I get these fixes done and see the results I just won't know. The other difference is my system for this house is a 4 ton 2 speed AC where as the other home was 3 ton 2 stage or 2 separate compressors. The 2 speed is merely 1 compressor with 2 different speeds. So it should be interesting over the course of the next couple years to see how this plays out.

I'm not a big fan of oversizing the coil to increase SEER (that's why they do it) as it actually impairs dehumidification. It's not necessarily done to increase SEER, but to reach the rating that AHRI matches the equipment to. Ironically, this rating is just a number that if you use a certain set of equipment parts and pieces you 'should' hit the SEER number. It doesn't mean you 'will' hit the number, because proper installation is always the elusive variant. No matter how much or how little you want to realize this fact. A nice pretty install picture doesn't mean the system was 'installed properly'. But people, God bless them, don't look at things this way. They say 'company A' uses xyz brand and 'company B' uses xyz brand so it's the same brand so the outcome will be the same as in a 'properly installed HVAC system'. However, it doesn't work this way in the real world. You're not buying a toaster. Having a larger coil does not necessarily hurt dehumidification either. The whole purpose of dehumidification is removal of water from the air. A larger coil has more surface area in which to ring moisture from the air. BUT, the difference is proper to improper. As if there are condensate draining problems with the said coil, it can reintroduce the condensate (humidity) from the air that was removed back into the air from whence it came. So if this thread is good for anything, it's to show that what I mention repeatedly about 'proper' versus 'improper' goes much farther than most people understand. ---------------------------------------------- Deb, hopefully this time you get what you paid for. I see there are numerous parts available for your A/C on-line.

As I'm quite sure they did not assemble your A/C's internals like a ship in a bottle, so there IS a way in!

I can find your Manual on-line, but not for free.

sounds like a clogged drain .... get some pipe cleaners in there?

Saltidawg, Yes, there MUST be a way in...lol. Thanks for looking online for the manual (too bad it's not free).

Skie_M, Do you mean the drain outlet on the exterior? I've never looked for a drain before. Or is it something on the inside of the AC that is blocked? If so, does that mean that the AC needs to be taken apart?

I'm praying for no heat waves.

I finally found my manual. It doesn't give any info about how to remove the grille. It doesn't say anything about what to do if water comes through the front of the unit.

All it says is to wash the filter twice a week. And it says that the unit is designed to operate with approx 1/2" of water in the bottom pan.

I found the hidden screw that holds the grill to the body. I can't believe I've never seen it before. It's hidden behind the filter! I'll try to remove the grille when I get the chance.

Yes, the water in the pan is there to help keep your condenser cooled ... without the water there, you'ld be burning it up. My concern is, if the condensate (water buildup) on the inside of the unit is there because the drain is blocked, is enough water getting to the back area of the unit where the condenser is to keep it cool?

There is usually a small drain hole between the front and the back that allows the water condensate from the front to naturally flow to the back and keep that condenser happy. If that hole is blocked up, you need to open it up ...

Is it possible to just uninstall the unit, take out outside and direct a good hard water spray into the problem area to look for the drain hole and clear it out? Keep in mind that you'll want to let the unit dry off overnight at least, before plugging it back in if you spray all over it.

Skie_M, thank you for all of your help, and your explanation was great. I have a feeling that the drain may be blocked, since it's never been cleaned inside there. Unfortunately, I'm unable to remove the unit from my window to take outside for a cleaning.

I'm hoping we don't get any bad heat waves :)
