It's because the washer door sticks out farther than the body of the washer and pedestal. Also you can't push the washer directly up against the wall, you will need some clearance for the hoses. Sounds like you might not have enough room!

Front loaders clean better than top load HE machines. Top load can be rougher on clothing. I have heard that LG are good, but when they break, they are pricy to service and difficult to get parts. I've just researched front loader for our new home where we will have both an upstairs and downstairs laundry room. I was between the Maytag and Electrolux, both highly rated. I chose Electrolux for several reasons: -I like the controls better than on the Maytag. They seem more intuitive. -The washer door is reversible. -They offer a second floor guarantee, which even if your's is not on a second floor, if you are not on a slab, you will be less likely to feel the vibration. -They offer a 15 minute quick wash cycle. -I prefer the look of the round vs. square door. Our appliance store owner (who also services the products) would purchase Electrolux over Maytag. (Though he has a compact European brand because he could not fit a standard size in his historic home.) The only thing I like about the Maytag better than Electrolux is the fan which helps prevent mold and can even wash and dry overnight, though I don't think I'd use that feature. And, the Electrolux door hinges out to 90 degrees unless closed to help prevent mold while Maytag's can be partially closed. I have heard that Samsung is good for top loader HE and like wekick mentioned, Speed Queen is the way to go for traditional top loaders, though they us more water, obviously, than HE. If you have a large family and wash two loads a day, HE have higher capacities than traditional. I think coming from an LG, you may have a hard time going back.

At the very least for now, pull that sofa away from the walls and towards the center more. It will add some depth to the space and enhance the picture. You could even think about a nice sofa table (long and thin) under the picture for some lighting to sit on. Move your chair to the left more place your end table near the chair and get the stuff out of the corner...it's cramped and out-of-sorts looking the way it is currently. Moving the items more into the room will up the styling. I also agree with Beth H. paint the walls. Her suggestion of a rich and clear dark blue would be perfect.
