Be careful not to squish the dryer vent hose. My W/D are stacked in a very tight space - getting them in there required two strong guys and movers straps under the set. Their first attempt to move them into place squeezed the dryer hose too much and they had to replace it and move them again. Works great, now.

A friend of mine bought a full-sized stackable LG washer/dryer set for his two-bedroom condo. The installer came in to do some measurements before bringing the machines up to the condo. The installer determined that the machines would just barely fit into the laundry closet. One unanticipated problem - the dryer-vent outlet at the back of the dryer is a bit too low for the lowest possible position for the dryer vent pipe. The vent pipe goes down a recess at the back of the laundry closet. The bottom of this recess, however, is about 1 inch too high to allow the vent pipe to connect to the dryer's outlet. My friend's previous dryer apparently had an outlet that was high enough for the vent pipe. Lowering the bottom of the recess will cost who knows how many dollars. I wondered, however, if it might be possible to raise a stacked washer/dryer pair without compromising stability. Any ideas?

Presumably this is a separate frontloader washer and dryer that are installed stacked with the dryer atop the washer. The dryer can be removed from the washer. It's typically attached/anchored by brackets at the back corners. It either involves two people to man-handle the dryer down, or some service companies have a special cart or dolly that has a platform at the height of the dryer which allows the dryer to be slid forward onto the cart ... but those rear anchor brackets still have to be loosened first either way, which apparently in your case with the tight closet installation there's no room to get behind the machines to do that. That's a hazard of closet installation that people overlook. You may have to hire some hefty guys to pull the stacked machines out of the closet if you have no friends or family able to do that. As you say, the obstructive lip of the new floor is another issue. The machines should have been removed during the installation of the floor so the tile could been run properly into the closet. Fairly common this also happens in kitchens with dishwashers ... new floor/tile is run up to the dishwasher but not under it which effectively locks it in the cabinetry unless the countertop is removed so it can be lifted over the tile edge.

What do you need in your laundry space. I like many of the ideas that others have posted. I would suspect you need hanging space. Ironing space. Storage space. dirty laundry hampers. storage for brooms, and vacuum possibly. If you go with a built in, I would do generic sizing for machines, so that you can switch out brands. The best idea I think is to have side by side single set in basement and another set near the bedrooms. The side by side allows the water shut off and drain to be above the counter for easy access. You might have to move out the dryer for vent maintenance, unless you go with a ventless model. You absolutely need access quickly to water valves and dryer vent, and electrical outlets. I don't see that in your plan. I have a small built in cabinetry and w/d on my main floor. It is perfect for our family of 2. When I planned for the main floor built in, I did all the design myself. I have an access to one side to get to the water shut off valve, drain pipe, and dryer vent (for clean out). I can reach into the lower cabinet open area to access the electrical outlets. I have about an inch on either side of the built in, and it is not a problem sliding the set out. I do not have a pan under the set, after a lot of thought. My machine pump clean-out is in the front of the washer, so no need to move the machines. When I was moving the machines in and out during the remodel, it was no big deal to slide the machines out. But that is a rare instance. There are several inches at the top of the machines. This set up is custom to my Miele set which is of a smaller design. The room was a constraint for size. I am not sure if a Bosch set will fit, but that could be an alternative set for me in the future, if needed. I always shut my water off when we leave for a few days. I also have a double stacked set in the basement of used machines for my DH farm clothes. I always shut the water off after my weekly farm clothes wash up.
