Our cat Mindy has crossed over

Our eldest (17 yr old) and only remaining female cat, Mindy, has gone to the Rainbow bridge some time this morning. Thanks given to God for calling her home to join 3 others we have lost since moving 9 cats to Georgia with us back in 2002. Ivan is digging her grave now.

Oh, I know this is so hard. I truly believe Mindy has joined the others, and all will join you someday, in great joy.

Oh, Cathy. I just saw this post and I am so sorry for you, my friend. Tough times indeed. I thought I'd share this with you to ease your sorrow just a little THE RAINBOW BRIDGE POEM When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Just a quick update. We've been to the vet. He did an Xray to confirm heart problems and said that Ginger is Stage 3. According to the vet, this is not too late for medication to give her a good quality of life, although it certainly can't cure the problem. He put her on three medications. One to strengthen her heart. One to lower her blood pressure. One which is a diuretic and she is taking a fairly high dose for several days, and if her coughing goes away he will slowly reduce the amount until it seems right. The medication caused diarrhea the first night. She is still having the spells where her legs give out and they are worse than they were at the beginning. We haven't even taken her outdoors lately. I put puppy pads by her bed, and sometimes just the effort of climbing out of the bed to use the pad will bring on a spell. The vet seems to think that will improve. I hope so because it scares her when it happens. It scares us too, but it's her we're worried about, not us. We hate to see her frightened like this. We are holding on to hope for a little bit, but we won't put her through this indefinitely. Only a little while, as the vet seems to think there is hope and says today's meds are really good. He did say that her tongue is nice and pink and that is a good sign, compared to when the tongue turns bluish for lack of oxygen. Of course, he also reminded us that at 15 1/2 years of age, she is quite elderly and medicine is not expected to keep her feeling good (even if it gets her that way at all) indefinitely. My heart breaks for her. I will let you know how she is doing again later on.

It is possible for females to bond closely, however. Decades ago, I had a female named Tempest who I raised from kittenhood. Although Tempest eventually (and much to her initial displeasure) had to learn to live with other cats, she never bonded with any until I took her into my marriage with me as an "only cat". We rescued an unrelated female kitten shortly thereafter. I don't know what it was about Pea that appealed to Tempest (Pea was always an extremely disagreeable feline), but she took Pea under her wing. Tempest and Pea were closely bonded for the remainder of Tempest's life ... many years into Pea's adulthood. Once Tempest passed, Pea never made even the slightest attempt to bond with another cat for the rest of her nearly 23 yrs. In fact, she made her intolerance of the other cats that came into our family very, very clear up until the day she died. Come to think of it, I did adopt a typically rowdy male kitten sometime during Tempest and Pea's adulthood. He was accidentally killed by one of our dogs within a couple of weeks, but while he was with us, T & P both hated him with a passion. My current three littermates (females) and their male cousin don't have similar relationships, either, despite the fact that they are all blood-related and were raised together as one litter. Two of the sisters and the male are all closely bonded, but the third sister only enjoys the company of one of her other sisters. It wouldn't be kind to lock a cat in with a motion scare any more than it is kind to lock them in with a scent deterrent. The laundry room is pretty much the only safe space that cat has known since a kitten- they got it last May and it's still considered too young to be left alone in the house. It's locked in there during night hours and probably during day hours when they are out of the house too. So a lot of it's training, bonding, and comfort time is spent alone locked in the laundry room. Putting scent deterrents or jump scares into the little safe space they are locked into and can't escape is just cruel. It's not nice to do it to an animal that can escape the fear and get out of the room/space with it, but it can be effective training if used humanely. To do it to to a trapped animal is just not OK. It would be kinder to rehome it, even if the kids do like playng wth it when it's allowed out of the room.

Rest in peace, Mindy. I'm sorry Linda. I saw your other reply, and though I'm sorry for your loss, I'm glad she is at peace now. I was so sad thinking of her and you suffering today.

Oh Linda, I'm so sorry to hear about your Mindy, but what a long life she had in your care..that is a blessing.

Such a sad time, this is, and I'm dreading it when it's my time to say so long to my now 15 yr. old Stash girl..my sweet little soulmate.

I know how hard it is. We lost our 19 year old kitty a few weeks ago and have been nursing our 18 year old through a major illness.

We, who are human parents to furkids, know this is all part of God's plan for all of His creations, be we humans or animals. I firmly believe that all of God's creations that are so loved here on earth, will go to their heavenly home, waiting for their humans who loved them. I'm not sad, just extremely thankful that our Mindy didn't linger to suffer longer. Those of you have recently lost beloved furkids and those who will in time to come, please know they will be waiting for you and for now, cherish all those wonderful memories you have.

I had to avoid this thread for a while... they make me so sad. I'm so sorry for your loss.

When I lost my little dog, the vet sent a card. I couldn't open it for weeks. I knew I wouldn't be able to handle it. And when I did open it, I had such mixed feelings. It was a picture (sketch) of a beach with some scattered toys, and pawprints and I don't remember the exact words but something to the effect of they've gone on ahead to meet you later. And I'm starting to get misty just thinking about it.

Cherish the memories. I know I do. And though that little fart went, geez, probably 15 years ago now, he still has such a soft spot. I definitely know how hard it is to lose a loved one. My best to you and yours.
