Hydropower from Old Washing Machines - Don't toss that Whirlpool!
Comments (0)OK. ItÂs New Zealand, not Australia. But this company called EcoInnovation still reminds you a little bit of Road Warrior. Founder and chief engineer Michael Lawley has built his "renewable energy store" on the ingenious redeployment of everyday household appliances. Among other things, the company recycles SmartDrive motors from salvaged washing machines to generate hydropower. Of course, you need to be near a river or stream. Yes, micro-hydro turbines that can tap into the movement of medium flowing streams and turn a turbine that can deliver most of the electrical requirements of a small home. Lawley says the company has been able to recycle the motors from salvaged domestic washing machines - aka Whirlpool. The company claims its already made 1,000 successful installations of its micro-hydro device as well as wind and solar power systems. -- continued at link -- Here is a link that might be useful: Article Continued Here...See MoreTo Machine Wash or Not To Machine Wash...that is the question
Comments (18)I hate to tell you this, but washing is no guarantee that fabrics won't bleed later. I have no idea why, but even fabric from the same bolt might act differently. Just yesterday, I had a small scrap of RJR panel print to make a label for a quilt. Spritzed it a bit first with cold water to press first, and very soon, the reds ran. All the fabrics were rinsed in cold water before I used them, and nothing ran. So, I got another idential scrap, and rinsed it in cold water first, to check. No running. Huh? So I got another and spritzed it. No running. It was all from the same bolt. Hmmmm. I guess I will just use one that didn't run. Go figure. I'm left to wonder what will happen if the quilt itself ever gets washed. It would not be the first time I've had this happen. BlueBars...See MoreVinegar in washing machines
Comments (4)I have been using vinegar instead of fabric softener for the 13 years I've owned front-loading washers. It did not harm the machine I just had to replace, and the salesperson at the appliance store said it was a good idea, so I've continued doing it with the new machine. The few tablespoons in the fabric softener gets diluted by the rinse water, but I've never had a mildew smell from the washer. I hope vinegar cuts some of the detergent left in the clothes, but I don't know if it really works....See MoreWhat happens if you don't pre-wash turface? Or use too much turface?
Comments (5)Bragu, I checked the roots and they are looking great. Thanks for the suggestion. Roger, thanks for sharing your experience. These symptoms could be a million things. I started to think zinc deficiency. I think I'm just trying to convince myself it's not viral. I found a place to test the plants, just gotta go on very specific times when I usually work. I sprayed them with a miticide, and also gave a good systemic. I feel like the leaves are finally coming back and dont look quite as bad as they did. To be continued on this mystery!...See Moredadoes
