TGIF-5/23/08 - Happy Memorial Day!

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

We are kicking it off today with Field Day at my kids school. It is a school wide "sport" competition with games, relays, etc that the kids always love. I am torn since I have one kid on White Team and one on Blue Team. I just hope everyone has fun.

No definite plans for the weekend, we have been invited to 2 BBQs, but I think I may opt to stay home and mulch. IT is oging to be cool, so I would like to get the swaety work done before we get hazy hot and humid. Maybe I'll put some ribs on the smoker for Sunday (or Monday) which I can just check periodically and still do yard work.

Happy Memorial Day weekend to all my American pals!

Just got back from Halifax so I'll be spending this weekend between laundry and yard work. Suppose to be gorgeous weather here so I'm really looking forward to being outside.

Alexa I was wondering what to do for dinner, ribs it will be!

Tonight MIL is coming to dinner and then we will have wine and music by the fire pit,tommorrow we will clean the pool and the Koi Pond,Sunday is a BBQ at my cousin Patricia's Monday is relax in the yard! Please remember to give thought to our Soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrafice!

Jcrowley, I can't imagine who thought 2 am was a wise time to end a high school party either! Jeepers, right when the sleepy drunks are hitting the roads! There's a local talk radio team around here I like, and one of the guys (who was apparently quite the party dude in his time) says every so often, that "nothing good happens after midnight". Around here (CA Central Valley), we are battening down the hatches for a storm that is meant to be coming our way. 50 mph winds, supposedly. Our back yard will be a lake again...the hardpan is so high that any hard rain saturates the thin layer of soil quite quickly, much to the displeasure of our resident felines, who, upon demanding we open the door to let them out will survey the liquid environs and eye us with displeasure, sure that they are that we could arrange the weather to their liking if we were really interested in their welfare. My husband is off tomorrow afternoon to sing with his Barbershop Quartet, which means I'll have all afternoon and evening to deal with the pile of Meyer lemons given me by a client (Lemon Curd, Lemon Marmalade, frozen lemon juice and peel...and, my husband may just come home to a nice loaf of lemon bread, saturated with lemon syrup.) I was really wanting to get out into the yard this weekend, but it seems that is not to be, so I will console myself with cooking! Enjoy, all! :D

TGIF my eye! It's been an unusually busy week and I'm running out of time. What's left to do? Youngest graduates from college Sunday, so I have to at least give the house a lick and a promise, shop and prepare food for Sunday's gathering; mow the lawn - I have lists within lists! It's only going to be the rest of our kids and their families, but that is 18 people in all, and some of them will spend Sat. night here. Let me brag a bit here. We are six for six in the college grad dept., and four have their masters. The fifth says she's done with school except for craft classes, and Sunday's grad (magna cum laude!) is going to loaf for a year before grad school. Our buttons are bursting, I can tell you that. Back to my list: I'm sewing a dress for #5 to wear to a wedding next weekend, but I've hit a snag and can't get back to sewing until Monday, so I'm worrying about that project. I know it'll get done and she'll be beautiful, but I wish I had gotten it done already. Our ancient cat seems to be sick and is throwing up all over the place, so hubby said he'll take cat to the vet today. The gardens are getting overrun because I've been too busy to get back to them, and it looks like they may have to wait another week. Hub can't mow the lawn (heart dr said so; I think they are in cahoots!) so I have to do that today. And things are breaking down, too. The garage door spring broke Monday; the dishwasher door lock keeps getting stuck with dishes inside; I just got a recall notice for my car; the "a" key on my keyboard sticks so I have to keep going back to retype "a"; those are the little things - my list of big things is huge! OK. I just needed to rant a bit on your beautiful parade! Now it's back to the salt mines for me. I promise to take many opportunities to enjoy my spring gardens while I'm wearing myself out today, and I know hub will make me laugh a lot. Linda, congratulations on the "pre-exam"! I got my Property/Casualty License in CO & remember stressing over the tests. Relax...you'll do great! Congrats to Erin, as well! What a wonderful Mother's Day present...can't do better than watching a child graduate! Enjoy the perennial sale. Annie, WOW! Your first anniversary already...I'm going to go back & look at the pixs again. It was a wonderful wedding & Annie, I'm so glad your Dad lived to see the smile on your face that day. Enjoy the Elvis concert. What a hoot. I think it's a fun present! Judy, another graduation! Congratulations to both your son & his finance. My DDIL also has her degree in music. She's a very cultured SAHM...rofl. Actually, DDIL's done something fun with her degree (if not profitable!)...she teaches a community music class to pre-schoolers. She's a pianist but since the third child was born she's not playing as frequently. :( I love listening to her play. We're going on our annual Mother's Day excursion to Newbury Perennials followed by lunch in Newburyport tomorrow. This will be our 9th year. This will be my first Mother's Day without any of the kids coming for a visit. Jobs have scattered our little family. BUT, our oldest daughter's DH is a diver on the oil rigs in the Gulf. They live in Houston & he ships out of LA. He's not been getting as much work & has just accepted an assignment in Norfolk for the next four months. After that, it seems likely he'll be offered a permanent job diving either in Norfolk or in Boston. We're trying not to get too excited but it sure would be great having them closer! Happy Mother's Day to all of the mothers. And, for Heaven's Sake, let's hope the rain finally stops! My white garden fence has turned almost totally green this week...enough already! /tricia

Stick to your guns Susie. I can feel your tension and hope you take good care of yourself. You will never be there for mom if you don't attend to your needs first. Being healthy and strong allows you to give more with less effort. Sounds like your mom is throwing a guilt trip at you so shrug it off. So hard when you want to help someone and they turn good intentions against you. Moms good luck with all those children... hope the sicky ones recover, those to be come healthy, and those that hope find their dreams. I didn't post yesterday as I was on the road for hours. My alma matter had invited me to attend a lunch/lecture/ and what was probably a wake. A dear departed "sociological technologist" was appreciated with a presentation of his final study given by one of his associates. Lunch was steak strips with a fancy peppery sauce. My table was joined by three beautiful current students happy to enjoy a free lunch. I couldn't hear those across the table from me but the young lady next to me was excited about pursuing a career in enviromental law. We had an alumni at the table currently working in that field so the talk was hot and heavy about what law school might be a good choice. The study was presented after lunch and was about the Internet habits of young people. It looked at the integration of technology into the social lives of high school students... facebook, my space, and creative outlets. Later we met in a quiet room of mostly faculty and memories of the late 60's and 70's and the school's founding were shared by those who were at the scene of the crime. Then we got down to business with cocktails and a connection time. I was a bit of an oddity because most students are fairly wealthy and go on to graduate programs and fancy careers. The college has some intest in using me as an example of what can be done with a liberal arts education without law school. They like that I was able to reinvent myself over and over to meet the challenges of my life. For awhile I sat with the Dean and drunkenly bent his ear about skills I've found critical but aquired after school. I stopped for a burger at a the Harrison Roadhouse which is just off campus and sobered up for the long drive home. For me drunk is about three drinks these days so an hour and food was plenty to get me on my way. I so needed that touching back with a place and people that gave me my adult life. TGIF and Happy Memorial Day to all who celebrate it.

Tonight will be dinner out somewhere.

Tomorrow night we are going to a birthday party aboard a ship with gambling, dinner etc. Should be fun.

Monday we are going to a BBQ at a friend/neighbors house.

Alexa, you may have started something, you're doing ribs, now Sharon is and I'm thinking the idea is right on! I need to go grocery shopping anyway.

I'm working the next three days, this weekend starts the tourist season here. I'm trying to convince myself that I'm looking forward to it. So no big plans. Of course, everybody around here is worried about the affects that the economy might have on tourism...gas is over the $4.00 mark here now. Guess we'll see....

TGIF to all, I'll be having a **CLINK** tonight around 6pm!

TGIF indeed.

Tonight is my great nieces HS graduation.

Tomorrow I am supposed to go to the Art Fair. If everything goes as planned our oldest puppy gets to come home from a long 10 day stay in the hospital. If she really does get to come home, I won't be going to the Art Fair.

Sunday a dear friend and his two sons plan on spending the day with us. He just lost his wife two weeks ago. The guys will be listening to the race on the radio, so I hope to get the last 8 flats of flowers planted.

Monday we go to my brothers for his annual Memorial Day cookout.

My husband and I have decided to have 3 solid days of attacking....The List. First item is the garage, which has become difficult to get around in...my part of that will be to reorganize my pantry (one whole wall of shelves) that used to be organized by item so that things could be found easily...but you know how that goes.

Then, the back yard needs a lot of attention. There are two areas we want to "floor" somehow, under the gazebo & in the bbq area. DH says he'll build wooden platform under the gazebo, but I'll be happy if we just get some bark or something down to fend off the weeds.

I MUST clean out the office, as my piles have gotten too big and messy (thanks to the cats...the messy part, not the big part) and I need to make our living room drapes (my sewing table is under some of the piles).

We will go to church on Sunday though, and DH has casually mentioned an air show that happens to be occurring just after church on Sunday, so we'll see...

Since I have 14 dogs here for the weekend...NO BARBEQUE! Maybe next week after 90 percent of them go home. Ribs do sound good. Maybe I will make them on tuesday when my out-laws swing into town. Hope to get the tomato garden planted in between yelling at...uh..I mean..caring for all these canines. I've got about 2 dozen plants already in containers and grow bags, but it's been too cold to get the plants in the ground...big warm up this weekend..so that should be good. Anywhere from 65-150 tomato plants..depending on my motivation.

Please say a prayer for all the service men and women who have fought to keep our country free, and for those in Iraq and around the globe doing their best to secure our interests abroad.

Not much planned here...most likely work on the house, after all its been almost 2 weeks and I still have dorm stuff in my dining room. My mom offered to hold it for me at her house-this way I don't have to get a rental unit.

Its still SO nice to have DD home for the summer!!

Over the past week I have been putting out all my patriotic stuff. I have flags, bows and bunting. Red lights in my porch light. It looks feastive even if we lay low this weekend!!

One great memory I have is of this week last year when I accompanied my son and his 8th grade class to Washington DC. It was a beautiful day! One stop was to tour Arlington National Cemetery. We stopped to watch the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknowns. It took my breath away because we could see in the distance the troops placing the flags at each stone, pausing a moment to salute and moving to the next stone. I was moved to tears.

TGIF, all! It's cold, windy and rainy....not exactly BBQ weather this weekend, but as long as it doesn't snow I'm happy.

I get two days off in a row for the first time in a long time. No plans...DH is trying to finish a kitchen and get it installed by the first of next week. Today I'll run to town for groceries and tomorrow I'll work for 4 hrs. at our little branch (that's like having a mini-vacation...nice and quiet). With any luck I'll be able to hole up at home for a couple of days and catch up on chores, get the greenhouses covered and till the rest of my garden if it dries out enough. Love those Monday holidays....

Well as of 8 this morning we already had 2 inches of rain and it hasn't stopped. I did get out in the rain and dig up one annual flower bed and came in when the thunder and lightening started and figured last think I needed was to be struck by lightening. The girls are gone until Monday and Hayden will be back tomorrow. My sis and her boyfriend are coming up and helping me dig out some trees and also saw down volunteer trees. Now if the rain would stop so I can go out and play. I should be cleaning the house and catching up on laundry, but just hanging around taking it easy, not able to do so when the kids are here. No big plans for the holiday weekend, going out for Chinese today for lunch and chiropractor appointment.

I believe unapologetically that I live in the greatest nation that has ever existed.
And this nation is great because of its patriots.

TGIF to everyone. Like Gina, we'll be remembering the veterans and the patriots and those who gave more than they should have had to for this country and those currently serving and those who already have.

I'll stand right next to Gina and pronounce this the greatest nation on earth, in spite of our human nature and our shortcomings. On Monday I'll be standing in the cemetary, crying at Taps and listening to the local Boy Scout Troop lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

Tomorrow, though, I'll be setting fence posts, Dad wants some fence "moved" now that I've managed to fix most of it. Sunday I'll finish planting the garden.

Monday, though, is reserved for every service member I know and those I don't, I'm grateful for every single one of them.

I'm there with Gina and Annie....I hope we take a minute or two and remember what this Holiday is all about....forget the politcal BS of the past and present....

Tomorrow I'm hosting a birthday/graduation party for around 45...that number will probably increase if past gatherings of my group come into play..LOL I just got done with getting the burgers ready for the grill. Brats and dogs complete my end of the deal, the rest of our feast will be provided from guests and family. Sunday I'm up at the lake for the day and then back in Tulsa on Monday for a BBQ. No sleeping in for me this weekend!!

We are starting nine days of vacation today. Yippee!

In doing my maternal genealogy DH & I have located about a dozen graves of my ancestors from the 17th, 18th & 19th centuries throughout New England. Many served in various military capacities. For the past 15+ years we have used Memorial Day as a time to visit the graves & do maintenance. Many are in very rural areas but located on private property. Others are in rural cemeteries that have virtually been lost to time. We cut back encroaching forest growth, straighten the stones, & plant a daylily. The oldest military grave dates to 1687. It took us 5 years to find the site. The headstone was buried halfway...we knew it HAD to be the right grave so DH started digging. We were able to get a tracing of the stone's engraving for verification. It's quite a hike off the road to reach the grave site. We notified the historical society of the location back in the early 90's so Samuel's grave now has a permanent Veteran's placque & flag. Buried near Samuel we located the graves of his second wife & 2 of their children who died in infancy. Other graves are in more prominent cemeteries & we visit just to pay our respects & leave one rose. We'll start our trip before dawn on Monday & won't be home until well after dark. All we can reach in one day are those graves in MA & NH. The rest we visit periodically to keep them maintained.

Today & tomorrow we'll do some garden work & BBQ. Next week, we'll take the ferry to Orient Point & spend the day garden center hopping. Then, we'll toss a suitcase in the car & take off for a few days...location unknown as of yet.

I too am thinking of all of the fine men and women who have and still fight for all they believe is right and good. A sacrifice by them and their families whose debt we could never repay.

Alas new heros are being created. It would be so wonderful if we could live in a world that had no need for heros. Last I saw the Iraq conflict had created about 4000 heros on our side and many more on the enemies side. A story from the war was that a medic patrol came upon two soldiers, one Iraqi and one American, injured by the roadside. While giving first-aid they asked the American what had happened. He responded that upon spotting the Iraqi soldier he had shouted the Saddam was an @zzhole. The Iraqi had shouted that Bush was an @zzhole. They had been shaking hands when a vehicle came along and struck them both.
