'Surprise me' What should I bring?

I belong to a writers' workshop and we're meeting at a member's house tomorrow instead of our usual cafe spot. He is making a chicken artichoke pizza and some dips. I want to bring something and his response was "surprise me".

Thinking about either the old standby summer torte or an orzo salad that has feta, artichokes, olives...

Thoughts? There will be about 10 people and it is early evening.

Well if it were me I would bring a "sweet" since he already has the savory artichoke thing covered. In whatever form you love but it would be a sweet!

For Writer's Work Shop?

A fish dish with Huckleberry sauce/jam.

and you can call the dish "Huckleberry Finn". :-)

You can always count on Lou!! But seriously, in answer to your questions... Chenille is tender so if you can bring it in, do so although the carport might be fine Impatiens should be covered. Pansies should be ok Sweet potato will not survive a freeze but will come back in the spring. My shooting star froze back last year but survived although not as healthy as it was I don't know about swedish ivy. Whatever you cover, make sure the covers don't touch the plants unless they are thick like quilts. Good luck! Hester

In other words, does each not occupy the same space when each is stuffed into a cubic foot container ? No. But your wording is a little tricky when you use the word "stuffed." If you poured it in and tamped lightly, still No. 1 cu ft = 7.48 gallons. 1 cu ft = 6.43 DRY gallons. For a simple experiment, take a 5 gallon bucket and a 1 gallon bucket. Use the 1 gallon bucket and fill up the 5 gallon bucket with peat moss, promix, whatever, until full. You should have used 5 gallons. Then wet it down every couple hours, just to make sure it's wet but not enough to "add" any height. If you do this enough, the air will escape and the peat moss will settle. You can even drill a tiny hole for the water to drain out if you'd like but no peat moss. Now, your 5 gallon bucket, settled about 2 inches from the top--does it have 5 gallons of peat moss in it? If you answer yes on a technicality that you did indeed put 5 gallons of peat moss in it, then the 5 gallon bucket...is it 5 gallons or more than 5 gallons if it's no longer full? You're the math wiz, not me, so how much more wet peat moss will the 5 gallon bucket hold? ;-) If we used a 6.43 gallon bucket, it should need 1.05 MORE gallons of peat to top it off! 7.48 - 6.43 = 1.05.

GW-you will love that salt. Another one I recommend is Celtic Sea Salt--Light Grey Celtic-Coarse ground,it is delicious and nutritious. The gift I ask Santa for every year is a Hess truck. Last year I didn't get it b/c of my dear SIL's death 1 1/5 weeks before Christmas. The reason I only want a Hess truck is that it is inexpensive and difficult to find. If you don't have a car you must travel all over for hours by train or bus because they sell out the day they go on sale(the day after Thanksgiving). Many can walk into a jewelry store but for a Hess truck you must work at it ! That's the point. Yes I'm proud to be a child.

Look at the stem connecting them to the tree. Is it green then sharply turning brown? It looks like at least one is. if so its done growing. The tree killed the stem going to it.

I would take that Summer Torte because it's easy....and I would make 2 because you will have 10 people and I figure 8 servings for that torte.

Is everybody bringing something? If so I bet there will be several sweets.

When someone says surprise me I would want to really surprise them.

I'd make up a really nice antipasto platter. Roasted red peppers, some rolled salami and prosciutto, selection of olives. I wouldn't bother with cheeses because I'm betting someone brings cheese.

A real treat I had on a platter recently was cherry tomatoes and pickled small "hottish" round peppers, stuffed with a small piece of moz and drizzled with olive oil. She also served mini boccocini bails wrapped in anchovies...to die for!

One of my friends brought these to Derby Day and they are completely addictive, a little different, not hard to make and have a bit of a wow factor......

Bacon-Wrapped Jalapeno Thingies

Prep Time 30 Minutes
Cook Time 25 Minutes Servings 10 Difficulty Easy
Ingredients
Ã¢ÂÂ 20 whole Fresh Jalapenos, 2-3 Inches In Size
Ã¢ÂÂ 2 cubes Cream Cheese, softened
Ã¢ÂÂ 1 pound Thin(regular) Bacon, Sliced Into Thirds
Preparation Instructions
If you have them, slip on some latex gloves for the pepper prepÃ¢ÂÂ¦ Cut jalapenos in half, length-wise. With a spoon, remove the seeds and white membrane (the source of the heat; leave a little if you like things HOT). Smear softened cream cheese into each jalapeno half. Wrap jalapeno with bacon pieces (1/3 slice). Secure by sticking toothpick through the middle.

Bake on a pan with a rack in a 375-degree oven for 20-25 minutes. You donÃ¢ÂÂt want the bacon to shrink so much it starts to the squeeze the jalapeno. If, after 20 minutes, the bacon doesnÃ¢ÂÂt look brown enough, just turn on the broiler for a couple of minutes to finish it off. These are best when the jalapeno still has a bit of bite to it.

Serve immediately, or theyÃ¢ÂÂre also great at room temperature.

YouÃ¢ÂÂll love these so much, youÃ¢ÂÂre gonna come out of your skin. Or something like that.
