I have to brag for a minute...

As all of you know, I have been in school for a while now. For my MPH I did a pilot study interviewing 4 year olds (in 2005). Well, the article about the study has finally been published. It is not in a peer-reviewed journal (so it isn't considered as "good" as some articles). But I am so happy to finally have it finished and out there and wanted to share.

I teach four-year-olds in a program that includes parent participation. Your study is something concrete that I can use in encouraging parents to set the example for a healthy lifestyle. Thank you!

#3 son is a cute kid....I raised him like that. He has a step-son by his first wife, who died a few years ago, 3 of his own kids, and 3 step children by his second wife. The first step-son asked if he could stay with #3 after his mother died as he liked him more than his own dad. He helped a lot raising the 3 little ones. When the second wife and her 3 came along, everyone just seemed to mesh together well. It has really become a good lesson in how kids can get along. But my house is toooooo small for family get-togethers because they usually bring two or three friends too. First step-son is now married, has a step-daughter and is expecting his first child. If anyone wants to help sort out the relationships among this bunch, be my guest. I gave up. They get along and we are proud as punch with all of them.

In regards to Splenda, the only thing I have seen that has an unusual effect is Splenda in vinegar based pickling. Many sweet pickle recipes call for about five POUNDS of sugar! These same recipes have had a fairly sweet flavor by adding only one or two CUPS of Splenda. I use two types of Splenda here, one is the big bag type that is 'puffed up' and the VOLUME is about the same measurement as a cup of sugar. The other type of Splenda is a fine granulated version, usually found in those little paper packets used to sweeten beverages. Yuu would need far less of that type to sweeten anything. Needless to say Splenda would also work well for most any other acidic food that you would want to 'tame down' a little. With a little sugar added, a tomato sauce can be tasty and less acidic to the tongue. But if I used Splenda, a tablespoon or less would definately be more noticable. Using Splenda in most any jelly making or any home canning is quite safe. However, if its a jelly, you can't depend on the Splenda to set up the pectin (either added or natural). There, I much prefer Pomona pectin, as it needs no sweetener of any kind to set.

Thanks gldnfan. I do try to find the best in people I know Bronwynsmom from here and I don't think she intentionally would do that to another member that was proud of a family member. She probably didn't recognize the OPs name and thought is was yet again just another spammer. I'm sure next time she'll think to check how long an OPs been a member before assuming, as I said above, it's just another spammer. It's been crazy around here lately and with the economy will most likely get worse. The spamming, I mean. Mabye we should have some sort of code we change often so to add to our posts similar to this one so real members will know it's just good old fashioned bragging. LOL. Basically all I said is a ditto of Squirrel. Should have read that first. Ha!

Excellent, Janie. Good work!

I think Public Health is so important and interesting. My husband got him MPH in '05. He would come home from class and we would talk about what he has just learned. From our conversations I almost feel like I should have graduated with him. He did a research project in Thailand that compared the diet and growth rates of children in three small Thai villages. Public health in responsible for such an extream range of public safety...everything from Immunizations of children and the elderly to the inspection of septic tanks. Very diverse.

Sooey- where does your husband work? In a couple of years I will looking for a place to work and have to keep my eyes and ears open! LOL

Eric was in funeral director school at the same time I was in my masters program- our conversations and bathroom-textbooks were quite interesting!

To janie_ga - congrats - I am in HR & for a local gov't in NY & your credentials are impressive! Where did you go to school? I think the daughter of a colleague of mine went to school for MPH in GA.

To sooey - I am in a MS program right now & I tell my husband that both he & his company are benefiting from my Master's.

School is good for your head & soul - good for you.

Janie, my husband retired from IBM in '04 and he now does some consulting work for local Health Departments here on the Cape. He does some soil sampling and perk hole testing. He has done everything from pool/restraunt inspections to mock disaster/shelter drills. He also has some experience using GPS as a maping tool for water quality issues. He thinks its all great fun.

Sooey- I think some of the epidemiology stuff like your DH does is soooo interesting! (I was excited when I could spell that word!!!!).

Hostapasta- I might be sending an application to you in a few years. Stick around in the HR department until summer of 2011, please. LOL

I got my MPH from Armstrong Atlantic State Univ. in Savannah, GA. There are also programs at UGA (Athens), GSU (Atlanta), and Emory (Atlanta). I think Mercer in Macon may also have a program. I was accepted at Emory but didn't want to go into debt just to have a piece of paper with their name on it. I went to Armstrong for free because I worked at GSU at the time.
