layout of 8' x 5' laundry room

Hello all -

I'm converting our existing upstairs bathroom to a laundry room. Basically, the room is a 8' x 5' rectangle in which you enter at the far left of the 8' wall. I am planning to replace the existing lav (located directly in front of the door) with a laundry sink. I will keep my current washer and dryer and likely stack them on the opposite end of the same wall as the sink. My question (or plea) is, what advice would you offer for the space in between?

The cabinet maker discourage me from putting in a full size broom closet because he felt that the room would feel too closed in with the stackables. I am considering doing a set of uppers or open shelving.

Any advice or pictures of similar spaces would be much appreciated.

Do those folding tables fit into the studs like medicine cabinets?

Also, I am wondering if I should place the stackable washer and dryer on the long wall, which is exterior, and would mean I only have 5' to work with . . . or against the 5' wall. The problem with placing it on the short wall, would mean figuring out how to utilize the corner.

The door will be on 8'9" wall adjoining the kitchen and the placement is flexible as long as there is room in the wall for it. I am not exactly sure how big the pocket door will be (32" I think) but I know it has to be wide enough to get the W/D in and out.

My front load washer specified that it be placed at a load bearing wall. Also agree with the suggestion to place the dryer for the shortest vent length. There is a max vent length for dryers. If you go beyond that they recommend an inline buster fan. Also agree with the sink along the run with the W/D, and not on the bed room wall.

@emilyam819 I thought about doing that but really don't want to have plumbing on an exterior wall here in Maine. This is a first floor bathroom so all the plumbing is easily accessible from below so moving the shower bath and toilet won't be too big of a headache! @jackowskib I'm personally not crazy about pocket doors but that would be a really good option for someone that likes them! I'm thinking a door stopper will be just fine to prevent the door from hitting the toilet and that there should be enough room to not be overly obstructive. It also makes walking in on someone a little less embarrassing since the door doubles as a privacy barrier.

I'm sorry I went MIA on this thread! I don't know why I didn't get any email notifications about these comments. @Karenseb do you mean that you had a cabinet for the length the entire short wall opposite the door? If that's right, was the corner of space under the counter and behind the washer a black hole or a good space to keep something out of sight? @Lynne Om (9A, New Smyrna Beach,FL) there's no option for the dryer to go on an exterior wall. It goes into our crawlspace into a straight and smooth-side pipe (not flex) that vents to outside. I know this isn't ideal, but it is what it is. Thankfully it's not too far that it has to go. I definitely want to have hanging space over the sink or dryer, so I'm trying to decide which is better! I don't think I'll do floor to ceiling cabinetry in here since I am already using most of my cabinetry budget for mudroom lockers at the E1 location.

I have similar dimensions for my laundry 7' x 5'. I have my FL stacked all the way to the left of the 7' wall then 5' of counter for folding, no sink :(. Kind of a pain to not have the units facing you since there is not a whole lot of space to work with directly in front of units. I have tossed around the idea of switching to the short 5' wall to make moving laundry from wash to dryer easier but like you I would have that gap in the corner as well as the dryer vent and water hoses to deal with. If you could make it work it would be nice to build some shelves on rollers to put your detergent in that empty space. IF you leave the w/d on the 7' wall as you planned I would recommend either a counter (maybe that will hinge up) with sorting bins underneath.

Do you feel terribly crowded with the W/D against the 5' wall? Is there room to open both doors all the way and bend over without banging into the machines . . . or the side wall?

You mentioned that you had a counter for folding - any cabinets?

There are currently no hoses or vents in place, so I'm free to use the space as I wish; unless it makes a difference that only the back 8' wall is external.(?)

No I don't feel too crowded, I suppose why I haven't moved them. Plus I don't want to deal with that odd space. Both doors open fully without banging the wall and once I have them open I can stand in front of them and take out items etc..... not as much room as I had envisioned but I suppose about 2' of space in front of units. I'm afraid if I move them to the small wall that I will loose too much floor space, which I still use a bit for sorting small loads.

Cabinets, not yet but do plan to put up a single cabinet above the counter to hold detergent etc.... and possibly a rod to hang items right out of dryer.

Depending on your climate the external wall may be an issue if you live where it gets real cold. Don't need any pipes freezing!
