Help Me Choose Between these Two Dryers! Whirlpool or Oasis??

Thanks everyone for your answers to my questions (which I have had many).

I "THINK" right now my washer is a 3 or 3.2 just guessing as it is not written anywhere. Is a jump to 4.0 enough?

We are a family of 2 adults, 1 teen and 3 young kids so I think I need to increase the washer capacity.

I have read of rust problems with the Oasis? This would have been my first choice but now I am a little hesitant. If anyone has anything to say about the Oasis I would love to hear.

I have the thread listed as Dryers but I am looking to buy the Washer Dryer set.

The Whirlpool model is new. It's a traditional direct-drive/transmission agitator mechanism, with a new automatic water level feature. Kenmore Model 800 is Sears' version of it. These are not HE machines, but they are EnergyStar qualified due to reduced water and energy consumption compared to "old-style" agitator washers.

The Oasis is an HE machine, with an impeller instead of agitator. Lack of an agitator taking up space allows for the larger capacity rating. Siblings are Whirlpool Cabrio and Maytag Bravos.

My Oasis dryer, the 6.8 flatback, was badly rattling too. The repairman, not Sears, but a sub-contractor that does warranty work for most brands, "fixed" it. He removed the front panel, showed me that two bottom metal aluminum pieces that stick out were the culprit. He cut to size some sticky padding material that he had in his tool bag, affixed it to their bottom, and the rattles were gone. He had no idea as to the purpose of the two pieces of metal, worrisome because he seemed to be very knowledgeable and competent. It has been 2 weeks and the dryer front panel is still not rattling.

I don't think you could go wrong with either.. both are of European design (or half-European for the Duet) and I trust the Europeans' longer experience in making reliable front-load washers. Salesmen at the appliance stores I visited have generally recommended Bosch, Miele, and/or Whirlpool. You might want to consider the availability of Miele service and parts though. I bought a Whirlpool Duet 9400 in March and have been pleased with its performance. I had a white bath rug with blue dye stains that no top-loader would ever get out, but after running it through several laundry cycles with the Duet (washing and drying each time), the stains eventually disappeared. I really don't know what to make of mc58's problem with the Duet 9200. I had a 9200 for a couple weeks before exchanging it for the 9400, but I never experienced problems as bad as described by mc58. I honestly didn't see any big difference in what we washed anyway. Yes everything came out clean as a whistle but so did everything washed on the normal cotton cycle that took 51 minutes. We just wanted to use it to make sure that everything worked on the machine. I guess if you were washing dirty cloth baby diapers or something then the extra hot (158 degrees) and super long wash might be worth it to you from a Disinfecting stand point, of course the bleach does than anyway but as far as regular washing of just dirty whites etc then just a normal wash in Hot wash cold rinse is more than adequate. In fact we washed most loads 4 out of 6 in warm/cold and everything was fantastically clean and fresh. So the standard wash is 51 minutes with one rinse which was fine, each added rinse was I believe 13 minutes or so extra. Each full load now only takes 90 minutes or less from going into washer to coming out of dryer. It used to take that long or MORE just for the dryer and 68 minute wash before so we are saving about 70 minutes per load from the old set. Actually even more than that really because we always had to wait at least 30 minutes or more for the dryer to finish before we could put in another load. So really saving about 100 minutes per load time wise. Unless there is some odd reason the metal hoses do not fit then I think the installer fed a line O BS about the hoses. We use the "Floodsafe" stainless braided lines, they have a automatic shutoff feature that in case a line blows or the washing machine malfunctions in anyway causing water to fly then the hose automatically shuts the water flow off. Bpathome, the rods separate from the middle (because they are expandable) so I slip off the curtains and neatly fold them, and store them with my linens and lay the rods along the drawer edge when they are not in use. I have a handheld laundry steamer, so when I want to pop them back on, I just give them a quick steam to look neatly pressed. The only sign of them when not in use, is a small (postage stamp size) magnet square that I permanently adhered to the doors top corners (because my doors are not metal). But I painted them white and they lay almost flush to the door (less than 1/8 thick) so they really do just blend right into the door.

If I were buying today, I would buy something HE, preferably an HE TL as well, but that's just me. I have had 2 FL's, one I absolutely loved( Danby FL) but had to give up unfortunately, and the other (Maytag 2400 compact FL) that is.......well......it saves a lot more water than a traditional TL and is better to have something than having to go to a laundromat. I'll just leave it at that! :o)

But if an HE TL interests you, you should definitely check out the Maytag Bravos models as well. The Oasis models have had many negative reviews from when they first came out. Cabrio reviews were a bit better, but not by much if I recall correctly. The Bravos made it's debut later after the Oasis and Cabrio. By that time, all of the kinks had been worked out on the other 2 models. And even though the Oasis now most likely is not as problematic as it was when it came out since most likely the bugs have been worked out, it may just give you peace of mind to check out the Bravos since they have way more positive reviews from owners.

My grandmother owns a first-generation Bravos and loves it! And I went to the home show yesterday where the second-generation Bravos with built-in heater was on display. The unit was plugged in and I was able to play with it a bit. I LOVED this machine!! Lots of cycles with various options, very user-friendly machine, will hold an ENORMOUS amount of clothes (which would suit your family well considering you have 4 kids), and it's on/off audible cycle complete indicator chimes some sort of catchy tune!! (not that that should be a factor in your purchase decision, but it was a cute tune, lol!!!) :o)

Oh, and also worth checking out is the GE Harmony. Another excellent HE TL washer that also seems to gets rave reviews!

if I were buying today, I would go HE machine and buy the Bravos! Hope this info helps!! :o)

You may be interested in this quote from the manual for the new Whirlpool model: "Auto Water Level - ...You may notice during a cycle that the wash load is not completely submerged in water. This is normal for your washer." So it has an agitator, but it's not what you're used to. AFAIK, usual procedure for agitator washers was to set the water level to cover the load.

SuburbanMD, my Fisher & Paykel toploader with automatic water level sensing (they've had that feature for years) occasionally doesn't completely submerge the clothes. Doesn't matter long as they circulate and slosh around in it. I've never had anything come out damaged or dirtier than it went in. People are too often nowadays trying to hand-hold these new machines instead of allowing and trusting them to run as designed.
