Wow, Simply stunning!!

Is this your first time using gumpaste or your first time using it on an Easter Cake?

first time using gumpaste - there are lots of tutorials out there on how to do them and I've always wanted to try it. It was addictive; I was annoyed that I had to stop to make supper :)

Oh my, that's just gorgeous, too pretty to eat anyway. Don't gum paste flowers last nearly forever, so you could reuse them if you were inclined?

thanks everyone . . . yes, dried gumpaste flowers will last until they're broken, but these were all smushed into the buttercream . . . and besides, I want to make more! I would love to start selling my cakes and have had many requests for them, but my state requires a commercial/inspected kitchen and I would never do it unless I had one. It all just seems like too much $$$ and time, plus I think I'm getting too darn old . . .

WOW you did a great job, the colors are so vibrant, Cake decorating, and sculpting is so addictive... You could save them, if you wipe them dry of frosting then let them fully dry.

Hey, I'd hire you to do flowers for Amanda's wedding cake, LOL, and my own wedding cake was made of your hot milk cake, so it would be another generation to have your "fingers" in our cake! (grin)

I'm with Annie....go for it! There are several women in my area (not all that far from you, actually...) that make cakes for birthdays, weddings, graduations, etc. None that I am aware of have a state inspected kitchen.

Theyre all right here in MN,too. If you like I could ask them about it.

I agree. Never too old as long as you still have the passion. I was watching "Cupcake Girls" (not sure if you get it in the US) the other night and I felt left out! I always wanted to open my own cupcake or bread shop but a lack of funds is always a problem. Oh well, maybe one day...

geez, there are so many I haven't taken pics of, but here are a few more. The second one has roses made from gumdrops and skittles, lol. And cupcakes, Al . . . I LOVE making cupcakes (see the big last pic :)
Linda, I know there are lots of people who make cakes out of their own kitchens, and everybody who has asked me to make them tells me that. I just couldn't do it - I'm such a 'rule' fanatic, plus there's always that chance that someone could get sick from something OTHER than that cake . . . then if it's a reported incident to the health department . . . those illegal kitchens might be in for some big trouble. sigh, I'm just waiting for somebody to hand me the keys to a commercial kitchen (as I get older and older, lol :)

That's just gorgeous! (She says as she kicks her own now pathetic-looking Easter cake under the bed so no one compare them.) If that's your first attempt, I'll bet you're inspiring lots of people to give gum paste a try. I certainly will.

I also agree that "too old" doesn't cut it. I'd love to see what your second and third tries look like!

The cake was gorgeous -- and you should follow your heart and do something you love. Maybe you should look into a partnership with someone -- a bakery might be too much competition -- for them, but what about a restaurant where you could work in the mornings when it is less busy or a caterer that might let you work in times (and buy your cakes).

The inspections might not be such a big deal, but I could never do it since mine is an open design and we have dogs and cats.

pixistix, I really like that second one with the flowers made of gumdrops and skittles!

If you donÂt feel like starting your own business, you may do well part-time or free-lance for a local bakery.

They are all beautiful! Perhaps you could pay a small rent and use a local church or hall's kitchen?

In my area of MD some of the churches have large commercial kitchens for when they host fundraiser dinners etc. Perhaps you can look into a rental agreement with a church. They might be agreeable especially if you agree to donate cakes occasionally for their fundraisers.

You have some serious talent! Better than some cakes I've seen in bakeries for sure. My SIL is in the same boat as you-she's a crazy talented cake decorater but doesn't want to go to work in someone else's bakery. OH allows home baking but only if there are no pets in the home (I think I have that right). She has dogs and cats so that rules out the home baking for profit.

The prettiest cake I ever made was the engagement cake for my sister... I covered it in pink marzipan roses (homemade marzipan so it tasted great!). Not a SINGLE photo was taken of that cake. :(

Beautiful work. You certainly have a talent for it. Check with some smaller restaurants, you could probably work something out for early moning, especially those that don't serve breakfast and use their facilities early in the morning.
