I don't have an island. Both my prep sink and clean-up sink are on the perimeter. My kitchen is long and narrow being 20'x10' and they are basically at either end with the range in the middle. I see no reason why the clean-up sink can't be on the island. There are probably examples here.

The disadvantage of the clean up sink in the island and prep sink in the counter is that you're facing the wall with your back to others while you prep. Since that's the most time consuming part of working in the kitchen, many find it much better to prep at the island where they can keep an eye on kids, socialize etc.

cheril... I actually see myself using my main sink more than the prep sink... the prep sink would just be a secondary sink. I was just wondering if it would look odd.

If that's the case, why not put the prep sink in the island and the clean up sink in the perimeter. My idea of a dream kitchen is one where the clean up zone doesn't overlap with the prep zone (can you tell I don't have this?). There's no reason that the sinks can't both be a good size but why have the zones overlap if you don't have too? Can you post your layout?

In any case, it wouldn't look funny to have a sink in the island and one in the perimeter, however they're intended to be used.

I'm with Cheri...Why not switch the sinks? I want to prep at the island, facing out, and NOT have dirty dishes on display there. Your plan is much like Malhgold's. She put equally sized sinks, I think, or maybe the island sink is even a little bigger, but the perimeter is her cleanup sink with dw beside it, and the other is her prep.

Why can't I prep at the main sink? The "prep" sink is really just a secondary sink, not even sure I'm gonna put one in yet. I don't want to put the main sink on the perimeter because it would take up too much space on that counter run.

As long as it won't look funny, I think I will go for it.

As Rhome posted, my "prep sink' is in the island and my clean up sink is to the right of my range. I didn't have enough room on the perimeter for a large clean up sink, so I have a 30" sink in the island and a 24" sink on the perimeter. I only use the "clean up" sink for dirty dishes, while the prep sink is used for prepping, and washing pots/pans. This has worked out really great for me. When someone is loading the DW, someone else can be cleaning up the pots and any other large items. It looks like you will be storing your dishes in the cabs on the back wall? If so, I strongly encourage you to consider the clean up sink and DW on that wall. It will make putting away your dishes so much easier. Your layout looks very similar to mine and it's really be great.

There's no reason you can't prep at the main sink; most of us do. It's just that having separate prep and clean up zones makes your kitchen 100% more functional.

The point of a prep sink is to be able to handle foods, etc. without working over dirty dishes and other cleanup mess... to separate tasks and functions. What will your "secondary sink" do for you? If you swap, as Malhgold has explained, I think you will get LOTS of use out of both. If you don't, I think one will just be 'extra' and maybe not worth the space or expense. Do you want the dirty dishes collecting on that centrally visible area? Everyone's not the same, but my family is not fastidious enough to keep the cleanup area clean, and it'd depress me to have to choose between looking at it all the time or becoming OCD about cleaning.

I am trying to decide if I really need the second sink AND I need to find out how much that sink would actually cost me. I do think the prep sink would get used though. As far as dishes in the sink etc., there is not "that" much cooking going on here. It's just my husband and me and my two grown sons, who are not here half the time. Right now I have one sink, but sometimes it would be nice if we had another sink.... besides the prep sinks look cool! ;-)

malhgold... Forgot to say that, my dishes will go in a drawer, probably the one across from the dishwasher.

I have to say that I have a prep sink in my island, and would always plan one in any kitchen we have. We have lots of activity and a big family for which it's often useful, but even when I'm working alone, I think my prep sink is priceless. I so enjoy having a specific place to wash and prep food, while I can throw dirty dishes, tools, and pots off to the cleanup sink.

If you do any entertaining, it'll be nice to have the cleanup area elsewhere, while you entertain... visit or serve... at the island. You could put ice in the island sink for beverages or foods that need to be kept cold, while dirty dishes collect in the cleanup sink. -Or- If others ever come and help you with a holiday meal or party, it's easier to share a prep sink at the island, since people can stand at any side, while, again, any dirty stuff gets put out of the way on the perimeter sink.

Not trying to push, just more to think about, only because I love mine so much and want you to see the possibilities and consider all your needs.
