Need New cabinets & I can't decide which ones to go w/

We are gutting our entire kitchen. Salvaging the cabinets is not an option. I am so overwhelmed w/ all the cabinet choices. We are on a tight budget. I think I have it limited to a few choices, but I need to know if anyone has had any experience w/ any of my choices and how they like or don't like them. I have it narrowed down to Pinnacle elite line, Lexington cabinets from in stock kitchens.com, schrock cabinets sold at Menards upgrade 1 or 2. Ordering cabinets is worse than car shopping. It's quite frustrating to go to 20 sites and only 2 actually show you the prices. It's kind of rediculous. Anyway help please.

Sometimes it's not all about the cabinets. It's about the company in your area that sells them.

So have you gotten quotes from showrooms/designers in your area?

They will usually do a quick consult and design for free, and this will give you insight into whether you like not only the cabinets, but, may give you very clear winners or losers in terms of businesses you'd want to work with.

You really can't guess about prices. They are truly incomprehensible.

I live in a small town 2500 people. The closest "big" town is 1 hr away w/ 15000 people. I don't have alot of options here. The closest home depot or lowes is 2 hrs away. Showroom/designers aren't an option I've been able locate out here.

Well Ta Daaaaaaaaaa!!! Last Snowflake wins by a landslide. I figured it would since it just has to be my most favorite in the garden. Thanks for your votes, this was fun. Last Snowflake has to be my favorite Stamile daylily so far. I love all the early blooming daylilies and the eyed ones, but somehow this one just tugs at my heartstrings. If you don't have it, get it, it will not let you down. Ann had to get it last year after I raved about it, but I don't think hers has bloomed yet. Mary, I just cannot give Fringy away, it was too expensive, I know you were joking. I do have very many seed pods from Fringy, I put its pollen on anything fancy. Ann and I are working on a trade this fall, she is sending me a Talledaga fan for a Fringy fan. Dot

Wow- you really are the best. Thank you. You have helped me so much. I am going to the paint store to sample golden tan. And I took the bold step (for me) of asking the painter to take on other work for a week or so until I am certain. I think that alone will make it easier for me to make a choice without the stress of having to do it so quickly. I will let you know what we go with!

I've been going back and forth on your post for awhile now just looking and thinking. I have oak cabinets too and we changed out the hardware to ORB. I love it. I hear your pain on painting the cabinets! DH is the same way but has always been fine w/ me painting our cabinets. We've just never gotten around to it though. Leaving the cabinets as is until you cajole your DH into painting I think that white is a good decision for table and chairs. But Let me toss this idea out to you: Should you eventually paint your cabinets would you consider painting your table base in a pale shade of grey/ blue? I suggest this just because I think that those curtains need something a little 'weighty' in the kitchen w/ the addition of the brown sectional being in the other room. Or maybe not. I forgot that you were painting the wals green and I don't feel like erasing everything that I just typed!

I keep a small cabinet pantry (one of those cheap laminate type at Lowes) in our laudry room, where I store cans, pasta, rice, some snacks, and some baking supplies. I store extra or large items in our unfinished basement on shelves. The little pantry in our kitchen now has cereal, oils, crackers, PB&J, honey, flour, sugar...the more common every day items. I will usually have to make a couple trips to our laundry room while cooking, but it isn't too far, although more pantry would be convenient. I do think I will get more storage with the penninsula, but I like the look of the island and getting helpers from both sides. My biggest concern with the island (besides storage) is the island being a barrier and the awkward corner on the fridge wall. I will map out my storage and see if that helps...thanks.

I live in a small town too, but I hired a cabinet guy who lives 120 miles away. I am really happy I did. He supplied me with gorgeous custom cabinets for not much more than IKEA cabinets would have cost! I ended up getting him to do my pantry, linen closet, laundry and bathroom cabinets too. So don't rule out custom cabinets just because you are in a small town. You might be pleasantly surprised!!

Fax/scanner? Phone?

Do you have a rough drawing of the kitchen area you can fax/scan off to a kitchen place (call first, obviously) they might be able to do a quote from that and a phone call for details.

If they're mean/condescending to you on the phone for even asking, that might save you a lot of driving right there.
